Cardiff has celebrated 60 years since being declared the capital of Wales.
On December 20, 1955, the government declared the city to be Wales’ capital, following a campaign by the city council and a ballot of Welsh local authorities.
The great and good of the city have hailed how Capital status has enabled Cardiff to grow “beyond all recognition” into a world-class centre for sport, culture and beyond, reports walesonline.co.uk

For many who live in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, it is disappointing that there are street lights that hardly ever function. This situation has residents apprehensive especially with growing security concerns in the city, reports leadership.ng
Most times, a drive around Abuja at night makes one feel no different from being in a city without any street light poles at all. It is a vast plunge into darkness.
While a few major streets do have their lights turned on at night, 90 per cent of Abuja’s streets are only navigable if your vehicle head lamps are super sharp and radiant.
And it is not uncommon to see many dilapidated taxis without a set of functioning head lamps moving around Abuja.

“Over the past year the capital city Sofia preserved the positive trend in the field of tourism with an average annual growth of 10%,” said Dr Todor Chobanov, Deputy Mayor of Sofia, speaking at a seminar themed Sofia Municipality 2016 Draft Budget held in the mountain resort town of Bansko, reports FOCUS News Agency.
The Deputy Mayor commented further that the figures presented were valid by the end of November and were not final.
“There is an upturn trend and it will be preserved over the next years or even improved,” Mr Chobanov remarked.
“Sofia Municipality will continue working for developing further out tourist and information centres and opening new sites,” he added.
According to official data by the end of October 2015, compared with the same period in 2014, there is a 10.2% growth in the number of tourists registered in the city.
“There is 9% increase of the foreign and 11% increase of the Bulgarian tourists,” Deputy Mayor Todor Chobanov commented further.

An avalanche smashed into 10 houses Saturday in Longyearbyen, the main settlement and “capital” fn the remote Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, sending eight people to the hospital and leaving several others missing, authorities said, reports Associated Press.
Authorities later confirmed that a man in his 40s had died in the Avalanche, having been found dead inside his house in the residential area hit by the massive snow masses.
The avalanche tumbled down about 11:00 a.m. from Sukkertoppen mountain, which dominates Longyearbyen. Dozens of houses at the foot of Sukkertoppen were protectively evacuated, said Tone Hertzberg, a spokeswoman for the Governor of Svalbard.
Three children were in serious condition and five adults were slightly injured by the avalanche, hospital spokeswoman Marit Einejord told The Associated Press.
Hertzberg said “it would be logical” to assume the avalanche was connected to a storm that hit the Svalbard archipelago late Friday. Local newspaper Svalbardposten said the storm, with winds up to 95 kph (60 mph), was the worst in 30 years.
“People have been taken to the hospital and there are still people unaccounted for. Right now we still have no overview of the situation. It will take hours, many hours, before we do,” Hertzberg told the AP by telephone.
About 100 people, including emergency workers and volunteers, were helping out following the avalanche. The archipelago’s hospital requested extra medical staff from the largest nearby hospital in Tromsoe, on the Norwegian mainland, and rescue teams with search dogs were on their way.
The fierce storm also ripped off a school’s roof, sending it flying onto a soccer field. The airport in Longyearbyen was closed Friday but was expected to reopen later Saturday.
Svalbard, which sits more than 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of the Norwegian mainland, is known for its stunning views of snow-covered mountains, fjords and glaciers. Located midway between continental Norway and the North Pole, the archipelago has about 2,600 residents.

The government of The Philippines plans to build an alternate capital in a former US military facility some 64 kilometers northwest of Manila as an insurance against natural disasters, reports ejinsight.com
The chosen site, Clark City, was itself damaged 24 years ago when Mount Pinatubo in Pampanga province erupted, covering the air base in ash and destroying buildings.
The Philippines is one of the worst affected countries by storms, volcanoes and other natural disasters.
“Can we allow the government to be paralyzed in case a disaster strikes Manila?” Arnel Casanova, president of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) told Bloomberg in an interview.
“We must have a facility that will allow the government to function with communications, databases, logistics.”
The government of outgoing President Benigno Aquino wants to build facilities in the area to host government agencies, the central bank and financial exchanges, the news agency said.
BCDA, the state manager of former military properties, has discussed the plan with the government agency tasked to manage disaster risk, Casanova said.
The master plan for the Clark Development has been approved by the president, including those for the alternate capital, he said.
Government agencies and the central bank were asked in September to put up business continuity centers in Clark and the BCDA is allotting about 100 hectares (247 acres) to 200 hectares for these, he said.
The stock and fixed-income exchanges and the Treasury will also be invited, he said.
Aquino has made disaster resiliency a priority, particularly after Super Typhoon Haiyan killed more than 6,000 people and destroyed an entire city in 2013.
BCDA is planning to build a 170 billion peso (US$3.6 billion), 85 kilometer railway to help connect Clark to Manila, Casanova said.
The agency could implement that via a public-private partnership deal or through a negotiated contract.
When the US military left the air base in 1991, parts of Clark Air Base were used as an economic zone, where the airport is, though most of the area remains undeveloped.
Clark has an international airport and is near Subic seaport, making it ideal as an alternate capital, Casanova said.
