Israel to close its embassy in South Africa

Israel is planning to withdraw its resident ambassador to South Africa after the government in Pretoria began steps to downgrade its relations with Israel, Israeli radio reported, according to the middleeastmonitor.com website.

According to the radio station, the Israeli embassy in South Africa will be downgraded to a representative office which would deal with consulate issues.

According to Quds Press, Israeli radio reported that that South African Foreign Minister Lindiwe Sisulu had told journalists in Johannesburg that plans to downgrade the South African embassy in Israel had started.

“We will not be putting up a nomination for a representative at the level of an ambassador in Israel,” minister Sisulu said.

“The office will remain at the level of a liaison and that is how it will operate,” she added

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) voted to downgrade the South African Embassy in Israel to liaison office level 16 months ago.

The South African government took this decision after the Israeli crackdown on Palestinian protesters taking part in the Great March of Return in the Gaza Strip.

Diplomatic relations between Israel and South Africa began in 1949, when Israel established a consulate-general in Pretoria, which was raised to the status of a legation (later elevated to an embassy) in 1950. South Africa had no direct diplomatic representation in Israel (it being represented by the United Kingdom) until South Africa left the Commonwealth in 1961, whereupon it opened a consulate general (later an embassy) in Tel-Aviv.

Pretoria

South Africa’s newly elected mayor of Pretoria, the administrative capital city (the two other official capitals is Cape Town and Bloemfontein; legislative and judicial capitals, respectively), has called for an immediate halt to all purchases or leasing of luxury cars for politicians in the capital, saying their use is an insult to those mired in poverty, Bloomberg reported.

‘I will not allow public money to be spent on luxury cars while our people struggle for services, houses and jobs,’ Solly Msimanga said in a statement on Tuesday.

‘No more luxury cars will be bought or leased under my government.’

Mr Msimanga took over as mayor of the federal capital after the main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, won control of the city following August 3 local elections.

The banning of luxury vehicles comes after the new mayor announced plans to review a 5 billion rand ($353 million) rental contract for the municipal headquarters, as well as contracts for utility meters, Wi-Fi and broadband provision.

Mayor Msimanga will pass 10 new BMWs bought by the previous administration to the Tshwane Metro Police Department, where they will be used by a newly formed anti-hijack team.

‘We will use them for a new unit in the Metro Police to prevent and respond to hijackings and high-speed chases because the vehicles have powerful engines and can be used for fast response,’ Msimanga said.

The ruling African National Congress lost control of Pretoria to the Democratic Alliance after its worst electoral performance since the end of apartheid.

About 23 million people in South Africa, or 45.5 percent of the population, lived in poverty in 2014, defined as those receiving a monthly income of 620 rand or less, Pretoria-based Statistics South Africa said in a report on its website that year.

CAPE TOWN VS PRETORIA: SHOULD SOUTH AFRICA HAVE ONLY ONE CAPITAL CITY?

Cape Town

South Africa’s president Jacob Zuma has called for Parliament to look at the country’s three capitals, advising that it is not practical for the country to maintain three capital cities in his 2016 State of the Nation Address.

South Africa is one of a few countries worldwide that has not one but three capitals: Cape Town, in the Western Cape, is the legislative capital and seat of Parliament.

Bloemfontein

Bloemfontein, in the Free State, is the judicial capital, and home to the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Pretoria

Pretoria, in Gauteng, is the administrative capital, seat of government and home to foreign embassies, and the ultimate capital of the country. It is home to the Union Buildings, which houses the Office of the President, and a large proportion of the public service.

President Zuma said having two capitals on opposite sides of the country meant that the State not only needed to maintain the two, but that MPs also needed to have two houses and two cars in order to do their duties – as an “unnecessary cost”.

In an ENCA interview live from Parliament the leader of the Freedom Front+ Pieter Mulder said any opportunity to cut government spending was good, although the move to have one parliament was suggested, and should have been done, in 1994 already and that if it does happen it will be an “expensive exercise that could take as long as 10 years”.

“We lose five to six hours of work travelling to Cape Town, we will support the move to of having these capitals come together as it will not only save time but also money,” said Reverend Kenneth Moshoe of the ACDAP.

Zuma also said the State plans to invest about R100m per annum to encourage South Africans to tour the country more.

While connectivity has been increased across aviation hubs such as OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and King Shaka International Airport in Durban, a good place to start would be to improve the more affordable rail travel, with facilities and safety needing to be addressed.

Radisson Red åpner i Glasgow. Foto: Rezidor Hotel Group

Hotellkjeden Radisson blir stadig mer fargerik.

Gruppen tar sikte på å lansere mer enn 60 Radisson Red-hoteller over hele verden innen 2020.

In Pretoria, a total of 1152 prostitutes compete for business at 30 different sites.

This is according to a study on the state of homelessness in South Africa’s administrative capital Prestoria conducted by the University of Pretoria and Unisa, timeslive.co.za reported.

The report, “Path Out of Homelessness”, warns of a multiplicity of social situations in the inner city where diseases proliferate.

The report says that, on average, 10 prostitutes ply their trade at a single site, but this can in places rise to as many as 200.

The report states that 1005 of the sex workers are women and 65 are transgender females and their ages range between 18 and 54.

Male sex workers make up 82 of the total.

Of 416 sex workers screened for HIV and TB since October last year, 187 were HIV-positive and of these 177 also had significant TB symptoms.

Quoting Statistics SA 2011 figures, the report says that of a total of 6244 homeless people in the Tshwane municipality, 54% are male, 46% female, 55% black, 39% white, 3.1% coloured and 2.1% Indian.

People aged between 20 and 29 make up 33.4% of the homeless population; 21.4% are over 65 .

According to the report, 32.1% of homeless people in Pretoria come from within Gauteng, while 52.1% are from other provinces and 15.8% are foreigners.

The researchers found that the city’s location and its status as a capital and an economic hub made it attractive to migrants from other provinces and from across the country’s borders.

CAPE TOWN DOMINATES; CONTINUES TO ATTRACT MORE TOURISTS DESPITE VISA CHALLENGES

Despite mixed reports about the aftermath of government’s revised visa regulations, the City of Cape Town has been attracting more and more international tourists and raking in billions, thesouthafrican.com reported.

Cape Town’s tourism sector has seen steady growth since 2012, despite the government’s controversial visa rules. Tourism spend has increased by R1.2 billion in the last three years bringing the current total spend to R15.6 billion, up from R14.4 billion in 2012.

According to research done for the city council, of the Western Cape’s 1 745 300 visitors, 94% choose Cape Town as their destination of choice. This report is the first that’s been able to determine tourism spend by domestic travellers on day trips to Cape Town, a total of R3.2 billion in 2013.

“This underscores the importance of not underestimating day trips to the city. We need to take cognisance of the bigger picture: although day visitors do not spend on overnight accommodation, they spend on the city?s attractions, restaurants, local transport and shopping, amongst others,” said Garreth Bloor, the city’s mayoral committee member for tourism, events and economic development.

Bloor went on to say that R3.2 billion is a “significant” contribution to the city’s economy annually.

“This spending power of all visitors to our city helps to stimulate local job creation. We have seen an encouraging upward trend over the last few years, with the number of jobs increasing steadily.”

“Currently there are 38 838 permanent jobs and 15 489 temporary jobs created in the local tourism sector. I am pleased to see this positive trend, especially during the tough economic climate that we are facing currently.”

“Sustainable job creation is a huge challenge so every job created is most welcomed.”

According to Traveller24, last year 28 000 000 domestic trips were taken in the country, with 10 247 614 foreign arrivals to SA.
