Air Malta is reconnecting Malta to North Africa following the re-start of scheduled services between Malta and Tunis Carthage Airport as from Monday, 26 June, the independent.com.mt website reported.

“We are very excited to announce that we will be returning to North Africa this summer with up to three direct flights a week. This is the second destination we are announcing in as many weeks. We have been following the situation in North Africa every day. Now that the situation in Tunisia has stabilised, we want to be among the first airlines to connect Europe with the country again. Tunisia is a great destination and we are confident that it is going to be a great addition to our schedule as we connect Tunis not only with Malta, but also with our other European destinations. The country is ideal for weekend breaks and sun certain holidays,” said Paul Sies, Air Malta’s chief commercial officer.

Tunis

Air Malta’s flights will increase flight connectivity between Tunisia and the European cities of Vienna, London, Rome, Amsterdam, Prague, Munich, Brussels, Marseille, Catania, Milan and Zurich with short connecting time through Malta International Airport.

Centurions return to Rome

Rome’s mayor Virginia Raggi has said that she will fight a ruling by Lazio regional administrative tribunal which overturned a city order banning centurions and rickshaws from operating around historic tourist sites in the capital, the wantedinrome.com website reported.

The city’s ban was quashed by the tribunal following an appeal by groups representing the costumed centurions whose trade “could not be considered an emergency” according to the court.

Ms Raggi has vowed to introduce new legislation to “protect” the city’s heritage, tweeting immediately after the court ruling: “Rome can not be held hostage by centurions and rickshaws.”

The ban, which was introduced by the Rome city government in November 2015, was extended by mayor Raggi last December. The order, which included penalties of 400 euros, was meant to remain in place until 30 July this year.

Consumer agency Codacons said the ban had been unjustified but argued that “clear rules” must be introduced governing the so-called centurions and how much they can charge tourists for appearing in souvenir photographs.

In the past the centurions have been accused of aggressive behaviour and requesting exorbitant photo fees.

Solomon Islands opens tourist office in Tokyo

Solomon Islands is to seek more tourists from Japan with the government setting up a tourism office in Tokyo, radionz.co.nz reported.

Japan is a key Pacific tourism market, and Solomon Islands wants to tap into that.

Honiara, capital of Solomon Islands

Earlier this month the Asian Development Bank advised the government of Solomon Islands to pursue the development of its tourism industry more vigorously.

The bank specified a need to foster tourism as the country’s key export earner, logging, winds down.

The legacy of years of ethnic tensions at the turn of the century held the sector back in Solomon Islands.

Solomon Islands has recently risen back to the level of about 23,000 annual tourists that it had immediately prior to the tensions in 1998.

But Auckland University of Technology’s New Zealand Tourism Research Institute director, Simon Milne, said the sector had a big future,

“There’s no question that there is a need to focus on marketing, to build awareness and perhaps counteract some of those perceptions from the past,” he said.

Mr Milne urged Solomon Islands to focus strongly on new emerging Asian tourist markets.

New Zealand’s outgoing Foreign Minister Murray McCully said the Solomons’ had spectacular tourism potential.

Mr McCully said it was necessary to first improve the quality of airports – a process to which he previously committed more than $US22 million dollars of aid money for the development of two airports in Western Province.

New Zealand has recently been asked to undertake the same work at several other airports around the country.

It’s official Canberra – we can’t get enough of turning the camera on ourselves, canberratimes.com.au reported.

Canberra

A new ‘definitive ranking’ of the world’s selfiest cities by TIME Magazine has Canberra in the top spot for most number of selfies per capita in Australia.

As part of its research, TIME built a database of more than 400,000 Instagram photos tagged “selfie” that included geographic coordinates.

In total, 459 cities were ranked to determine the selfiest places on earth.

Canberra comes in at Australia’s selfiest city, with 18 selfies per 100,000 people (ranked 169 on the world list), while Sydney-siders aren’t far behind, with 18 selfies per 100,000 people but ranked at 171 on the world list.

Melbourne and Brisbane come in at three and four respectively on the Australian list, with our Perth friends proving the most camera shy at just 12 selfies per 100,000 people.

Makati City, in the Phillipines, is the world’s selfiest city, followed closely by Manhattan, New York at number two and Miami, Florida at number three.

And when it comes to the perfect selfie, you can’t beat our cultural institutions for a stunning backdrop.

Data from Instagram shows the Australian War Memorial is the top geotagged location for pics in Canberra (13,429 tags in 2016) and our beautiful Lake Burley Griffin isn’t far behind (12,597 tags last year).

The National Gallery of Australia is up next with 10,827 tags in 2016. Surprisingly, the Australian National University is a destination of choice for Instagram pics, with almost as many people tagging themsleves at the university as Parliament House (8257 and 8318 tags respectively).

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) generally is the eighth most geotagged location in Australia on Instagram – Bondi Beach is number one.

Spanish embassy at Draycott Place, Chelsea.

Spain has opened a Brexit help desk at it’s embassy in London. The special desk is designed to resolve doubts concerning the effects of the UK’s divorce from the EU on Spaniards living in Britain and Northern Ireland, The Olive Press website reported.

A Foreign Ministry statement today said the desk will provide information on issues such as residence permits, health care, pensions, education and grants.

Some 132,000 Spaniards are registered as living in the UK and Northern Ireland, while more than two million visited in 2015.

There are currently 11,000 Spanish students studying in universities across the UK.

There are thought to be tens of thousands of more Spaniards living in the country unregistered.

Spain is the number one destination for UK citizens living outside Britain. Spain is home to just over 300,000 Britons, around a third of them aged over 65. The figure rises to around one million if Britons who live only part of the year in Spain are included.

Wellington is the best place in New Zealand for tourists to have a pint, according to a new Lonely Planet guide written specifically for beer-lovers, nzherald.co.nz reported.

A worldwide network of travel writers and beer journalists have contributed to the guide, covering the best bars and breweries in 30 countries.

Wellington, capital city of New Zealand, and Melbourne and Perth in Australia, are the pick of the Oceania region, the book says.

“It might be wet and windy for much of the year in Wellington but there are always sunny fruit flavours in a pint glass to banish the blues with New Zealand’s distinctively tropical take on pale ale and IPA,” it says.

“Wellington has an extremely strong array of breweries and craft beer bars, making it a compact and cool city to tour.”

Melbourne is Australia’s “ale capital” while Perth is home to some of Australia’s first craft brewers, according to the book.

Auckland, Blenheim, Dunedin and Hamilton are also highlighted as beer-related spots to visit in New Zealand.

The book guides tourists to the best breweries to visit in each city, as well as each brewery’s must-try beer. A few local sights are also included for tourists who manage to leave the pub.

Lonely Planet’s Global Beer Tour will be published in May.
