They are plain and simple, three pairs of extended white wings in masonry, standing on the roundabout at the 5th of June and Liberation Avenues. Conspicuous as they are, they invariably leave visitors guessing at the significance of such a graceful piece of geometry.
This is the Bicentennial monument, referred to in Creole as the Moniman trwa lezel (three-winged monument). It was erected in 1978 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the town of Victoria, which was founded as L’Établissement du Roi in 1778 by the Frenchman Charles Routier de Romainville.
The monument was created by the late Italian artist Lorenzo Appiani, who lived in Seychelles.
The three wings represent the origins of the Seychellois people, who can best be described as a happy blend of the ethnic groups of three continents:
Africa, Europe, and Asia.
The wings may also symbolize the first discoverers of the islands. Birds, of course.

The introduction of Turkish Airlines flights to Seychelles will bring benefits to the tourism sector and local business, says a top official of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Seychelles News Agency reported.

Direct flights from Istanbul to the Seychelles capital city Victoria, on Mahe island, are expected to start in October and will be operated by an A330-200.

The chair of the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Wilson Nancy, told the news agency that: ‘Direct access to the Turkish market will provide great traffic for Seychellois businessmen to shop in Turkey, especially for textile and consumables.’

Records from the National Bureau of Statistics show that Seychelles is already importing fruit and vegetable juices, pasta, dried leguminous vegetable, olive oil and milk from Turkey.

Mr Nancy said that when the flights start, businesses will be in better positions to source goods like construction materials, which are more affordable in Turkey, benefiting local contractors.

Tourism, the first pillar of the Seychelles’ economy, is another industry that will benefit from the three weekly flights from Istanbul.

‘The flights from the Turkish Airlines will not only bring tourists from Turkey. It will connect us to the rest of the world. Turkey is an airline hub in Europe, giving us an advantage in that region,’ said Alain St. Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture.

Turkish Airlines is the national carrier of Turkey and a member of the Star Alliance, which is the largest global airline alliance.

The airline, currently flying to Madagascar and Mauritius, ‘is working closely with Seychelles to see which of the local market needs more attention so as to see them grow,’ said St. Ange.

The national carrier of Turkey is flying to Madagascar and Mauritius, both belonging to the Vanilla Island group.

The airline has invited representatives of Mauritius, Madagascar and Seychelles to participate in a road show that will take place in Bucharest, Budapest and Prague.

Representatives from these island nations will meet with travel agents and tour operators as well as bring together hotels, Destination Management Companies and tourism boards.

‘They will be pushing the Vanilla Island concept forward. Turkish Airlines is our new partner in promoting this region,’ said Tourism Minister Alain St Ange.

Air Mauritius is set to launch a regional African airline, with the intention of reinforcing connectivity between Africa and Asia, reports news24.com

Carla da Silva, Regional Manager for Southern Africa and Latin America made the announcement at its annual Air Mauritius Awards.

The new regional airline is set to operate as a subsidiary of Air Mauritius and “will increase the Air Mauritius network, adding additional eight points in the African region.

Added to this the airline will be launching operations to Maputo, capital city of Mozambique, and Dar es Salaam, commercial capital of Tanzania, in May. Mauritius remains a popular destination for South Africans and is the fourth largest market for the airline.

In July 2015 South African Airways and Air Mauritius broaden their code-share agreement to enhance greater connectivity between the continent, South Africa, Mauritius and other inter-continental routes.

“The broadening of our relationship with Air Mauritius follows growing traffic between our two countries not only as a consequence of tourism, but is also concomitant to growing trade between the markets,” said South African Airways Acting CEO Nico Bezuidenhout.

In December 2015 Turkish Airlines also announced it would be serving the Mauritian capital city of Port Louis with a four-times weekly flight.
