Nigeria closes missions in Sri Lanka, Serbia and Czech Republic

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, Nigeria

The Federal Republic of Nigeria will close three of it’s diplomatic missions, due to lack of budget funds, Nigerian authorities says.

The embassies in Prague in the Czech Republic, Belgrade in Serbia, and the High Commission in Colombo, Sri Lanka, will ble closed down, while the embassy in Kiev, Ukraine, will be downsized.

At present, Nigeria maintains 119 embassies, high commissions,  permanent missions, and career consulates, around the world.

Suriname opens embassy in Ghana

The foreign minister of Suriname, Yldiz Pollack-Beighle, was in Ghana last week to open her country’s first embassy in Africa since the closure of its mission in Pretoria, South Africa, the caribbeannewsnow.com website reported.

The embassy was opened in Ghana’s capital city Accra, the ancestral home of many Surinamese.
Citizens of all African countries can now apply for the Suriname E-Visa or E-Tourist card to enter the country.

Suriname requires a visa for citizens of all African countries and has promised that “the embassy would promote cultural exchanges and visits for tourists via e-visa and e-tourist card.”

Ethnic ties between Suriname and Ghana date back to the transatlantic slave trade era but there are little economic and cultural exchanges between these two countries.
Ghanaian languages are still spoken in Suriname and Ghanaian customs and tradition outside of Ghana have survived in Suriname.

Suriname vice president, Michael Ashwin Adhin, who was also in Accra for the inaugural ceremony said:

“These strong bonds ensure that we are entering into a new phase of expanding political, economic as well as trade relations on the basis of mutual interest and benefit, to further the development of our peoples.”

“Suriname is rich in gold, bauxite and prospects of huge deposits of oil and gas; rainforest with an abundance of fresh water for farming and ecotourism. He called on Ghana to take up these opportunities for trade, investment, partnerships and job creation. However, the lack of maritime and air transportation between the two countries make this dream highly impossible and especially the need for a visa between the two countries doesn’t help develop trade and tourism relations,” he noted.

The foreign minister of Ghana, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, promised to expand bilateral relations and open an embassy in Suriname.

The two countries signed four agreements on political consultations; visa exemption for diplomatic and service passport holders; a roadmap for cooperation and a letter of intent for cooperation and collaboration in the field of diplomacy and international relations.

“We may be divided by the Atlantic Ocean, but we are one and the same people with a common heritage,” minister Botchwey said.

Belgium has announced the opening of four new embassies in Africa. The existing diplomatic bureaus in Cotonou (Benin), Conakry (Guinea), Bamako (Mali) and Niamey (Niger) will be upgraded to the status of embassy as of 1 February 2018, the cnbcafrica.com website reported.

The current upgrade reinforces all fields of the Belgian foreign policy in a comprehensive approach: bilateral cooperation, diplomacy, development cooperation, defence, security and justice. It will make it easier to align all these policies.

Belgium’s national flag

Through the upgrade to the status of embassy, our country will have henceforth full-fledged diplomatic representations in these four partner countries of the Belgian development cooperation.  For the time being, the embassies will not provide additional consular services. The diplomatic offices were initially created as diplomatic offices for development cooperation.

The conversion will be implemented at a minimal cost.  The current heads of mission will continue to manage the mission. Subsequently, new ambassadors will be posted on the occasion of the next diplomatic movements.

One of Macau’s biggest casinos is building a casino complex in Cape Verde

Macau, the world’s largest casino hub, is expanding into Africa. Macau Legend, led by billionaire and former Macau legislator David Chow, is building a $275 million casino complex in Cape Verde, off Africa’s west coast, Quartz Media – qz.com reported.

The 152,700 square-meter (1.6 million square feet) complex, which will house a resort, casino, office buildings, and a museum in Cape Verde’s capital city of Praia on the island of Santiago, is now in its first phase of construction.

So far, a seawall has been built and construction of the hotel is expected to start soon, according to a Macau Legend spokesperson. The massive complex will be partially built on reclaimed land, area that was once under the sea. It should take at least another two years.

But the casino isn’t meant for Cape Verde’s half a million residents, many of whom depend on foreign aid flows, remittances, and tourism for their livelihoods.

Instead, Macau Legend hopes to cater to tourists from Europe, elsewhere in Africa, and most importantly from China, the biggest source of customers for Macau’s casinos.

For the past four years, China has been the world’s largest outbound market. Chinese tourists spent $261 billion last year, a 12% increase from the year before, according to the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Spending from this market has seen double-digit growth every year since 2004 and is expected to continue expanding, according to the UNWTO.

As China builds its “One belt, One road” or “Maritime silk road,” a network of land and sea transport links that roughly follow the ancient Silk Road route, more African countries will attract Chinese investors and tourists.

Casino companies in Macau, where gambling revenues have fallen during an anti-corruption campaign in China, are looking to capitalize on this.

“This project follows the China government’s national policy “One belt, one road”, a strategy to help position Macau as one of the important cities on the Maritime Silk Road, which shall be a vanguard to lead Macau small and medium enterprises to expand from Macau,” David Chow, Macau Legend CEO, said

in a 2015 press release announcing the project. Mr Chow said that Macau and Cape Verde, both former Portuguese colonies, share a common heritage.

While Cape Verde gained independence in 1975, Macau remained under Portuguese control until 1999, when it was returned to China and is now a partly self-governing territory known as Macao Special Administrative Regionof the People’s Republic of China, situated 64 kilometers west of Hong Kong.
