Belgium has announced the opening of four new embassies in Africa. The existing diplomatic bureaus in Cotonou (Benin), Conakry (Guinea), Bamako (Mali) and Niamey (Niger) will be upgraded to the status of embassy as of 1 February 2018, the cnbcafrica.com website reported.

The current upgrade reinforces all fields of the Belgian foreign policy in a comprehensive approach: bilateral cooperation, diplomacy, development cooperation, defence, security and justice. It will make it easier to align all these policies.

Through the upgrade to the status of embassy, our country will have henceforth full-fledged diplomatic representations in these four partner countries of the Belgian development cooperation.  For the time being, the embassies will not provide additional consular services. The diplomatic offices were initially created as diplomatic offices for development cooperation.

The conversion will be implemented at a minimal cost.  The current heads of mission will continue to manage the mission. Subsequently, new ambassadors will be posted on the occasion of the next diplomatic movements.

Macau, the world’s largest casino hub, is expanding into Africa. Macau Legend, led by billionaire and former Macau legislator David Chow, is building a $275 million casino complex in Cape Verde, off Africa’s west coast, Quartz Media – qz.com reported.

The 152,700 square-meter (1.6 million square feet) complex, which will house a resort, casino, office buildings, and a museum in Cape Verde’s capital city of Praia on the island of Santiago, is now in its first phase of construction.

So far, a seawall has been built and construction of the hotel is expected to start soon, according to a Macau Legend spokesperson. The massive complex will be partially built on reclaimed land, area that was once under the sea. It should take at least another two years.

But the casino isn’t meant for Cape Verde’s half a million residents, many of whom depend on foreign aid flows, remittances, and tourism for their livelihoods.

Instead, Macau Legend hopes to cater to tourists from Europe, elsewhere in Africa, and most importantly from China, the biggest source of customers for Macau’s casinos.

For the past four years, China has been the world’s largest outbound market. Chinese tourists spent $261 billion last year, a 12% increase from the year before, according to the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Spending from this market has seen double-digit growth every year since 2004 and is expected to continue expanding, according to the UNWTO.

As China builds its “One belt, One road” or “Maritime silk road,” a network of land and sea transport links that roughly follow the ancient Silk Road route, more African countries will attract Chinese investors and tourists.

Casino companies in Macau, where gambling revenues have fallen during an anti-corruption campaign in China, are looking to capitalize on this.

“This project follows the China government’s national policy “One belt, one road”, a strategy to help position Macau as one of the important cities on the Maritime Silk Road, which shall be a vanguard to lead Macau small and medium enterprises to expand from Macau,” David Chow, Macau Legend CEO, said

in a 2015 press release announcing the project. Mr Chow said that Macau and Cape Verde, both former Portuguese colonies, share a common heritage.

While Cape Verde gained independence in 1975, Macau remained under Portuguese control until 1999, when it was returned to China and is now a partly self-governing territory known as Macao Special Administrative Regionof the People’s Republic of China, situated 64 kilometers west of Hong Kong.

The Russian Federation has opened a honorary consulate in Banjul, capital city of The Gambia, The Daily Observer reports.

The honorary consul of the Russian Federation in The Gambia, Mr. Momodou Lamin Manga said in a press release that “The opening of the office is a clear indication of strong ties between Moscow and Banjul. The two countries have enjoyed fruitful relations over the past 50 years, and there is a lot in the pipeline to cement ties.”

The consul added that many Gambians have had the opportunity to study in Russia and as a result, he is pleased to reveal that two Gambian students will benefit from scholarships offered for the next academic year.

“There are many areas of interest and cooperation being undertaken by the two governments which should bring its people closer,” he was further quoted in the press release.

Consul Manga also appealed to all those that had studied in Russia to kindly forward an email or contact the office as they would like to update and create a database of former students that studied in the country.

The Islamic Republic of The Gambia and the Russian Federation have reinforced the diplomatic relations between the two nations, as The Gambia opened a new Embassy in Moscow, the Daily Observer newspaper in The Gambia can report.

 Russia is yet to open an embassy in The Gambia, but maintains a honorary Consulate General in Banjul, the capital city. The Russian Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, is also accredited to The Gambia.

In order to strengthen its economic and bilateral relations ties with Nigeria, Denmark has formally opened its embassy in the federal capital Abuja and consulate in Lagos, Nigerias former capital and now it’s main commercial hub, with a team of investors visiting the country to discuss ways of attracting investments into the economy, reports the nationalmirroronline.net website.

The team of investors who visited the Nigerian Investment Promotion Council (NIPC) was led by the consul general of the new embassy, Mr. Per Christensen. He stated that his team was willing to invest in a commercially viable interest with Danish equity.

Mr.Christensen listed some sectors of the Nigerian economy his country would be establishing partnership with Nigeria to boost as renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, power and agro allied sectors. He harped on the important roles and support of the Commission to help navigate them through the Nigerian market and also match-make them with potential local investors. The envoy maintained that the diplomatic mission in Nigeria was established to advise and assist in a number of areas which include, political, consular, commercial, investment, cultural, press, and facilitate business relations and activities between both countries, but however disclosed that the danish Government had officially registered its presence in Nigeria since 1984.

Vest-Sahara, også kalt Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), ble i 1976 erklært selvstendig av frigjøringsbevegelsen Polisario, men er ikke anerkjent av FN. 

SADR og Polisarios eksilregjering har kontroll over enkelte områder øst i landet, og har base i Algerie. SADR er opp gjennom årene blitt anerkjent av 84 FN-land, men 37 av dem har helt eller delvis trukket anerkjennelsen tilbake.

Vest-Sahara har rundt 20 ambassader rundt om i verden, og er medlem av Den afrikanske union, AU. Territoriet tilhørte Spania frem til 1975, da Marokko og Mauritania rykket inn og tok kontroll. Annekteringen er ikke internasjonal anerkjent. 

El Aaiun, som betyr “Kilden”, ligger helt nord i landet og har rundt 200,000 innbyggere.

Gambia er nå en islamsk republikk og offentlig ansatte kvinner må dekke til håret. Det krever president Yahya Jammeh (bildet), skriver VG Nett.

– Kvinnelige ansatte bes om å bruke skaut og dekke håret pent til, heter det i et rundskriv som er sendt ut til alle departementer og offentlige etater i det vestafrikanske landet, kjent for sine flotte strender og store naturopplevelser.

95 prosent av det populære ferielandets 1,8 millioner innbyggere er muslimer og det har derfor ikke kommet sterke protester etter at president Yahya Jammeh proklamerte islamsk republikk.

Yahya Jammeh, eller Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Abdul-Aziz Awal Jemus Junkung Jammeh Naasiru Deen Babili Mansa, som har hans fulle offisielle navn (50), har styrt Gambia etter at han som ung løytnant tok makten i et militærkupp i 1994. Han er senere valgt som president i 1996, 2001, 2006 og 2011. 

Gambia er en tidligere britisk koloni, og fikk sin selvstendighet fra Storbritannia i 1965. Presidenten trakk nylig landet ut av Samveldet (The Commonwealth).

Yahya Jammeh har i mange år gjort seg svært bemerket i Afrika og ellers internasjonalt med en lang rekke oppsiktsvekkende og kontroversielle avgjørelser, uttalelser og utspill om en rekke forhold.
