En 38 år gammel spansk kvinne ble blitt av en hai mens hun svømte ved Risco Verde i Arinaga sørøst på Gran Canaria i 1.juledag, skriver Canariajournalen.

Cristina Ojeda-Thies, som er fra Madrid, skal ha vært 20 meter fra stranden da hun merket noe som hugg tak i den venstre armen hennes, ifølge lokalavisene Canarias Ahora og Canarias en Hora.

Kvinnen skal ha slått til haien med den andre armen, og den slapp taket og forsvant i dypet.

Kvinnen kom seg i sikkerhet på land, og oppsøkte et helsesenter hvor hun ble sydd og fikk antibiotika, forteller hun til de kanariske avisene.

På Twitter har hun lagt ut bilder som viser tydelige bitemerker fra mange skarpe på armen.

Dette er første gang en person er bitt av hai på Kanariøyene under bading i havet, ifølge presidenten for haialiansen på Kanariøyene, Fernando Frias. Informasjon på nettsiden til Shark Attack Data viser imidlertid at det har skjedd fem ganger tidligere siden år 1900.

Frias har inspisert bitemerkene og tror det kan ha vært en silkehai som bet kvinnen. Silkehaien kan bli fra 1,8 til 2 meter lang.

Både Frias og Pascual Calabuig, biolog og direktør for et senter som tar seg av skadde dyr på Gran Canaria, tror at det dreier seg om en isolert enkelthendelse.

Frias sier til Canarias Ahora et haier på Kanariøyene sjelden kommer nærmere land eller folk enn 20 meter, og at folk ikke trenger å være redde for å bade.

Området hvor hun ble bitt ligger mellom to fiskeoppdrett som tiltrekker seg haier, ett i Tufia og ett i Castillo del Romeral.

Cristina Ojeda-Thies tilbringer juleferien med familie som bor på Gran Canaria. Hun skal ha sett noe som så ut som en stor, gråhvit fisk med grovt skinn da hun ble bitt, og la etterpå merke til noe som så ut som en haifinne.

US architects Mark Khidekel and Regina Khidekel are on a visit to Azerbaijan to participate in the US Speakers Program held in the country, reports Trend News Agency.

They have held meetings in Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction and met Azerbaijani architects.

Khidekel said it is their second visit to Baku, adding that they like the city very much. Baku is located on the crossroads of Europe and Asia which gives a unique look to the city, he said.

He pointed out that Baku is rich of architectural monuments, which proves that the country is developing. The city’s historic buildings and old streets should be preserved, according to Khidekel.

The architect said he liked the stone facing of the buildings in Baku and noted that it is quite possible to build skyscrapers in the city. Khidekel noted that several projects were discussed during the meeting with Azerbaijani architects.

For example, a beautiful area can be built around the National Flag Square in Baku, he said. Moreover, the architect supports the idea of horizontal buildings and believes that it is a very advantageous project.

Khidekel said it is possible to construct such buildings in Baku as well, noting that thereby, Baku can become the first capital city with horizontal buildings.

The architect expressed readiness to work on such a project in Azerbaijan if he receives a proposal.

Mark Khidekel is an architect and designer. M.A. and Ph.D. from the Leningrad Institute of Architecture and Construction. Khidekel began his study of architecture under his father, Lazar Khidekel , one of the major Russian avant-garde artists and architects, disciple of Mark Chagall and Kazimir Malevich.

Siden slutten av november har flyselskapet KLM testet ut roboten Spencer som flypassasjerenes beste venn på flyplassen Schiphol i Amsterdam. Spencer vet det meste, og kan spørres om all verdens ting – uten at det oppstår språkproblemer, skriver VG.

Etter to år med programmering og testing, planlegger KLM å sette Spencer i full drift i mars. Da vil den super-intellegente roboten gå 24-timers skift – blant annet for å hjelpe passasjerene å finne transfer-flygningen sin så raskt som mulig.

Robot-prosjektet støttes av EU-kommisjonen – mot at Spencer skal tjenestegjøre i Schengen-delen av flyplassen.

Against the backdrop of a protracted terrorism wave that has wrought fiscal havoc on the Israeli capital’s economy, a recent far-reaching PR campaign launched by the Jerusalem Municipality has resulted in a significant boost in tourism, reports The Jerusalem Post.

The campaign was initiated after the Finance Ministry allocated NIS 100 million for emergency loans late last month to aid hard-hit business owners whose profits, in many cases, have been cut in half.

Of that amount, NIS 20m. was used to launch the tourism initiative, which is being overseen by the municipality in conjunction the Jerusalem Development Authority and Culture and Tourism Ministries.

According to municipality tourism director Ilanit Melchior, the campaign has already paid dividends in drawing Israelis and overseas visitors to the struggling capital this month.

Shortly after the campaign began, Melchior said that nearly 50,000 visitors came to the city over the first two weekends of December to celebrate Hanukka and enjoy the city’s vaunted cultural and entertainment attractions.

Moreover, she said the campaign resulted in an up to 40 percent spike in the number of visitors to the city’s Hanukka festival and many museums, compared to the same period last year.

Mayor Nir Barkat said the municipality and development authority will continue to invest millions in strengthening the capital’s economy through the campaign, which will promote festivals, and numerous discounted hotel packages and restaurant offers.

Somalias regjering har nedlagt forbud mot feiring av jul og nyttår. De som likevel forsøker, vil bli stoppet av sikkerhetsstyrker. Grunnen er ifølge en talsmann for myndighetene at jul- og nyttårsfeiring strider mot islamsk kultur, skriver nrk.no

-Slike festligheter kan skade troen til det muslimske fellesskap, ifølge Mohamed Khayrow, talsmann i departementet for religiøse spørsmål.

99,8 prosent av Somalias anslagsvis 10,5 millioner innbyggere er muslimer, der majoriteten tilhører sunni-islam. 

Også sultanatet Brunei, på Borneo i Sørøst-Asia; et av verdens rikeste land, har innført forbud mot julefeiring. Det er sultanen selv, Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien (69), Hassanal Bolkiah i dagligtale, som er en av verdens rikeste menn, som personlig har innført forbudet. 

Sultanen er så godt som eneveldig, og er selv både statsminister, utenriksminister, forsvarsminister og finansminister i landet. Hassanal Bolkiah innførte forbudet da han mener at julefeiring ikke er forenlig med islam.

Opptil fem års fengsel og bøter på 175.000 kroner venter dem som trosser forbudet. Julenisser, kors og julesanger anses å stride mot islamsk tro og er forbudt.

Rundt 65 prosent av de 415,000 i det oljerike, tidligere britiske protektoratet, som ble selvstendig i 1984, tilhører sunni-islam, som er landets offisielle religion. 13 prosent er buddhister og 10 prosent er kristne. Også flere andre religioner praktiseres i landet.

Også den tidligere Sovjet-republikken Tadsjikistan i Sentral-Asia har innført forbud mot julefeiring.

Landet tillater rett nok et juletre på torget i hovedstaden Dusjanbe, men det får også være nok, mener myndighetene.

Tadsjikistan forbød alt for et par år siden den russiske versjonen av julenissen, Fader Frost, å vise seg på TV-skjermen.

I år ble forbudet mot juletre og gaver skjerpet ytterligere inn, og myndighetene la ned forbud mot fyrverkeri og nyttårsfeiring i samme slengen.

Nissemasker er helt utenkelig i det sekulære landet, der flertallet av innbyggerne – 98 prosent, er muslimer og der politiet også er kjent for å pågripe dem som drister seg til å gå med vampyr- eller zombiemaske på halloween.

Berlin’s bus line 100 is one of the great tourist bargains of Germany’s capital. A half-hour ride on a double-decker bus that takes passengers past many of Berlin’s chief landmarks and only costs small change, reports Deutsche Welle.

The 100 bus route is a hot tip for tourists in Berlin. In a half-hour trip from Zoo station in the western part of the city to the landmark Alexanderplatz square (or vice versa), passengers tour through a number of the city’s must-see spots. It was brought into service 25 years ago after Germany’s reunification and was the first bus line to connect East and West Berlin. It has since gained enormous popularity as a tourist bus.

Some hotels give guests a “Welcome Card” for free that includes use of all public transport. If they don’t, a ticket from the driver costing only 2.70 euros ($2.90) takes you right through central Berlin.
