Kampala, capital city of Uganda

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has launched a historical buildings’ map showing 51 historical buildings, newvision.co.ug reported.

The map entitled “Kampala’s Historical Buildings and Sites-Our valuable but vanishing Heritage”, is meant to preserve the city’s history that shaped the country’s identity.

At the launch, KCCA’s Executive Director Jennifer Musisi described the milestone as a worthy cause, saying culture and history is what makes us as Ugandans.

She however admitted that not much effort had been made to preserve the sites, citing the need for strengthening the law and increasing awareness on restoration.

“There is so much out there that needs to be preserved and as people get to these places, they will begin to appreciate the value they contain,” Musisi said.

The identification of the historical cites was done by the Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda (CCFU), KCCA, Uganda Tourism Board, Buganda Heritage and Tourism Board and the Uganda Museum.

CCFU is a national not for profit non-governmental organisation that promotes the recognition of culture and as vital for human development that responds to our national identity and diversity.

Some of the sites include St Mary’s Cathedral Lubaga, St Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe, Uganda Museum, St Luke and St Katherine Wards, Mengo Hospital, Busega Martyrs Memorial, Fort Jesus Building at St Peter’s School Nsambya and the Makerere Main Building.

Others are Namasole Maasombira’s palace, Old Kampala Police station, Makerere Main building, Old Mitchel Hall, Makerere University, Kibuli Mosque, The Bahai House of Worship, Mengo Primary school, Kasubi Tombs and Old Mulago Hospital Buildings.

At the same event, Donal Cronin the Ambassador of Ireland to Uganda called for the retention of tree line streets and proper maintenance of the buildings.

He said building for the future and preserving from the past need to go hand in hand. “We need to know who we are, where we are going and where we have come from”.

The Oslo District Court states that it is not an offense to drive the Segway while drunk. A 33 year old man was acquitted after riding a Segway, with 200 milligrams of alcohol in his blood, according to the state broadcaster NRK’s website.

The Court concluded, although expressing some doubt when acquitting the Segway user, that the Segway must be compared with a toy and not a car, the VG newspaper reported.

The legal limit in Norway is 20 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliltre of blood.

Segways was only legalized in Norway in July 2014.

New Delhi city government has joined hands with the Event and Entertainment Management Association (EEMA) to host events in the capital through easy licensing norms. The first such event is the NH7 Weekender which is scheduled for November 28 and 29, indiatimes.com reported.

Tourism minister Kapil Mishra also said the government does not encourage the `pass culture’ prevalent in the city. “I have bought tickets for the event which is the most basic courtesy every elected representative of the city and Delhi government officials can extend to the artistes and teams that put such together such shows.

Asking for free passes, bribery at events using misleading and misinterpreted regulations and blatant misuse of power is something we are strongly against,” he said.

“Ease of doing business” has been a major point on Delhi government’s agenda and it has also set up a committee to look into simplifying the licensing process.

Mishra said that to promote Delhi as a cultural and entertainment hub, it was necessary to attract artists and performers through easy access.

“This move will be a mutually beneficial public-private partnership and will usher in an era of l minimum government and maximum governance. We will work with Delhi Police on single-window event clearance. Joint branding support will help bolster revenue which will further our investment in sectors like water, electricity , education and health,” Mishra added.

The music festival will also allow artists and craftspersons to showcase their work. There will be a variety of food, art installations, stage design etc. Sabbas Joseph, president, EEMA said: “We are delighted that Delhi Tourism has embraced the events industry in order to put this initiative in place with EEMA. We hope other states will follow.”

WHAT MACAU SLUMP? CASINO RETURNS TO TOP 20% ON TOURIST SHIFT

Macau

Gambling at casinos is risky. But even after a 17-month slump, building casinos in Macau still looks like one of the best Investments around, Bloomberg.com reported.

Operators including Sands China Ltd. and Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd. have earmarked $28 billion in spending over the next three years, with new projects that integrate casinos with hotels and entertainment complexes.

The aim is to broaden Macau’s appeal beyond hard-core gamblers to families and tourists, and placate a government in China intent on reining in the corruption and graft associated with high-rolling visitors to the city.

While the extra expenditure will slow the return on invested capital, or ROIC, the new projects will hand back an average return of 21 percent three years after opening, according to brokerage CLSA Ltd. That compares with about 50 percent at the peak in Macau two years ago and returns of less than 10 percent forecast for hotel groups in Hong Kong.

“We think the gaming sector is a good long-term investment as the industry generates high cash returns and the companies have a track record of paying high dividends,” said Aaron Fischer, head of consumer and gaming research at CLSA, one of the most experienced analysts who cover the casino industry.

While hoteliers can wait as long as 20 years to get their money back on major investments, the payback on Macau casinos might stretch out to a little over five years, from two years during the 2013-2014 peak. “It?s still very short,” Fischer said.

The risks remain high for casinos. China’s economy could continue to slow and yuan devaluation could curb tourism as it makes traveling outside the mainland more expensive for price-sensitive lower-tier customers gambling operators are trying to attract, said Richard Huang, an analyst at Nomura Holdings Inc.

It would take time to draw enough vacationers to make up for the high rollers the industry has lost, he said.

“Casino resorts have always been high risk, high Return,” Huang said. ?There?s no guarantee for casinos. One day you have a lot of customers and the next day you have no customers, like this year.”

Her er lista over Nordens 10 beste restauranter:

1. Noma, København

2. Fäviken Magasinet, Åre

3. Geranium, København

4. Daniel Berlin Krog, Skåne-Tranås i Tomelilla, Skåne

5. Esperanto, Stockholm, Restaurant Frantzen, Stockholm, og Gastrologik, Stockholm

8. Maaemo, Oslo

9. Kadeau, København, og Oaxen Krog, Stockholm

LONDON SEES GROWTH IN HOTEL DEVELOPMENT

The number of hotel rooms in London is expected to grow by 12 per cent over the next three years according to new data compiled by London & Partners and AM:PM, with the increase being driven by an uplift in budget and five star hotel accommodation across the capital. These new properties and hotel extensions will add 17,769 more rooms across the capital over the same period, up from the current figure of 138,769, www.eturbonews.com reported.

The data released to coincide with IBTM World in Barcelona this week, shows that 43 budget properties are expected to open by the end of 2018, with low-cost accommodation in the city predicted to increase by 29 per cent over the next three years. Over the coming three years, 19 five star properties will also open in the capital, increasing the hotel stock in this category by 22 per cent.

Tracy Halliwell MBE, Director of Business Tourism and Major Events at London & Partners, said: “With the rising number of business and leisure visitors to London and strong occupancy levels across the city, it is great to see that a range of hotel companies are investing in new properties, catering for the demand for both low-cost and high-end hotels. With properties right next to many tourist attractions, these investments will help to attract more visitors to London as well as provide new facilities for both local and international businesses to host meetings and conferences across the city.”

Rising business and leisure visitor numbers for London have been reflected in record occupancy levels across the city’s hotels. London occupancies have averaged 80 per cent or above since 2006, according to PwC and their UK hotels forecast 2016 predicts a decade high of 84 per cent this year, with the Rugby World Cup having provided a further boost. PwC projects a further increase to 85 per cent occupancy for London?s hotels in 2016.
