UAE SIGNS AIRLINES DEAL WITH AUSTRALIA

www.hovedsteder.blogg.no is a Norway-based blog about the capitals of the world, With a focus on tourism and travel, the environment, diplomatic affairs, lifestyle, culture and entertainment, food and drink. See also our travel blog at www.minbestereise.blogg.no – Contact us at [email protected]

Australia announced at the weekend a deal with the UAE that will significantly boost flight numbers between the two nations, a move that is expected to increase tourism and possibly reduce ticket prices, thenational.ae reported.

The bilateral agreement allows Emirates in Dubai and Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi to operate an extra 14 flights a week to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, bringing the total number of services to 161.

Australian airlines receive an extra 14 flight slots in return to the UAE, bringing the total to 56.

“The Australian government is committed to supporting the entry of Australian airlines into foreign markets and ensuring we have the aviation capacity necessary to meet future demand” said Australia’s acting prime minister Warren Truss.

Australia’s flagship carrier Qantas Airways, which has a commercial partnership with Emirates, switched its hub for European flights to Dubai from Singapore in 2013, after ditching the IAG-owned British Airways as an alliance partner in favour of Emirates Airline.

Virgin Australia, which launched flights to Abu Dhabi in 2011, last month received a draft ruling from regulators in favour of it renewing its alliance with Etihad.

Virgin needs that tie-up, under which Etihad owns a 24 per cent stake in Virgin and holds a seat on the board, to better compete against the Qantas-Emirates alliance.

The shifting skies are reflected in passenger data. Emirates now carries more than 25 per cent of the traffic between Australia and Europe, followed by Qantas with about 15 per cent and Singapore Airlines with just under 15 per cent.

Qatar Airways is also muscling in on the Australia to Europe routes.

The increased gateway capacity announced at the weekend supplements existing open access arrangements in place for regional Australia.

UAE airlines already have the right to offer unlimited services to other Australian destinations, including Darwin, Cairns, Adelaide and the Gold Coast.

Also at the weekend, Emirates, the world’s biggest long-haul airline, said it has identified Mexico City and Berlin as the most attractive new destinations that would become available with longer-range jets and expanded air-service treaties.

Flights from Dubai to the Mexican capital would be possible with Boeing’s new 777X plane, for which Emirates is due to be the first customer in 2020, while a Berlin service would require Germany to ease its opposition to more flights from Arabian Gulf carriers.

Emirates already serves almost 150 destinations in about 80 countries using the industry’s biggest wide-body fleet, so that most of the world’s major population centres are already part of the network.

It will begin operations to Panama in February with what will be the longest flight at any carrier and could add Dubai-Atlanta as Delta Air Lines quits the route in February.

“Our route planners are now closely studying the opportunity for Emirates to fill in the gap when Delta exits,” an Emirates spokeswoman said in an e-mail.

Delta said last month it was canceling the Dubai route amid overcapacity from Gulf rivals.

MEXICO’S RICHEST MAN IS THE ONLY ONE ABLE TO BUILD MEXICO CITY’S NEW AIRPORT

Mexico’s largest infrastructure companies have waited more than two years to get a piece of the capital’s new $13 billion airport project. Now as bids get under way, most are in poor position to compete. Enter 75 year old billionaire Carlos Slim.

Slim’s Grupo Carso SAB has the global reputation and healthy finances to win contracts over competitors including Empresas ICA SAB and OHL Mexico SAB’s parent company, according to Mexico City-based Vector Casa de Bolsa and consultant Boyd Group International,  skift.com / Bloomberg.com reported.

Rushing to meet a 2020 deadline to open a Mexico City facility that’s already behind schedule, tenders for major work such as terminal construction are set to start in coming weeks. That’s bad timing for ICA, saddled with ballooning debt amid concern that it may need to restructure liabilities, and OHL, the target of a regulatory review that found alleged accounting violations.

“But Carlos Slim – he’s got an impeccable reputation, he’s one of the wealthiest people on earth and his name is synonymous with Mexico,” said Michael Boyd, president of Evergreen, Colorado-based Boyd Group. “Hey, is there a question there?”

Last year the UK pocketed 940 million euros from tourists who came to attend a football matches in its stadiums. Of the 800,000 football tourists visiting the UK, an average of 1,176 euros was spent per person, http://www.consultancy.uk reported.

The lure of football to visitors from abroad is arguably nowhere so strong as the United Kingdom. With several legendary football teams, great players and renowned stadiums that capture the imagination of football fans, every year thousands of tourists are attracted to Britain to watch live football matches unfold.

The most popular destination among football tourists in Britain are the football stadiums in London – almost half of the visited matches took place in the British capital.

The main attractions include Arsenal’s The Emirates Stadium, Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge, Wembley (national team, some cup matches), Tottenham Hotspur’s White Hart Lane, and Craven Cottage, home of Fulham FC. The stadiums in Manchester also attract a good number of foreigners, with Old Trafford – the football arena of Manchester United – drawing significantly more visitors than Etihad Stadium, the haven of rival Manchester City’s Anfield, home of Liverpool, is in third place, with 99,000 visitors.

Ireland is the country where most football tourists come from, at around 121,000. Norway comes in on second place, with 93,000 of its visitors attending a match, followed by Sweden in third spot, with 58,000 match attending visitors. The top 5 largest foreign markets for British football is closed by the US, with 53,000 visitors, and the Netherlands, with 43,000. Together, the top 10 countries accounted for 68% of total football tourists.

Data from the Office for National Statistics and VisitBritain shows that in 2014 about 800,000 foreigners attended a football game during their visit to Britain’s shores.

That is about 50,000 more than in 2010. This group of tourists visiting the country produces a significant amount of money – football tourists spent an average of 1,176 euros per person (£885) during their visit to Britain, which amounts to a total of 940 million euros – 15% higher than in 2010. In comparison, tourists traveling to the United Kingdom that do not visit a match, give out much less during their visit – on average 834 euros (£628).

A dramatic sound and light installation in St Andrew Square, a design expo at Edinburgh Airport and a celebration of style at the National Museum of Scotland are to be held in the Scottish capital next year as part of a new tourism campaign, www.edinburghnews.scotsman reported.

The Edinburgh International Science Festival, the Royal Botanic Garden and the Filmhouse will also be taking part in Scotland’s first ever year of architecture and design.

More than 420 events will be held the length and breadth of the country for the Scottish Government-backed Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design, which follows celebrations of the county’s Food and drink, wild landscapes and the cultural scene.

The £800,000 initiative – which will include a dedicated Festival of Architecture running from spring until autumn – aims to “shine the spotlight on some of Scotland’s greatest assets, icons and hidden gems”.

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra will be helping to cast St Andrew Square in a new light in a two-month project celebrating connections between Scotland and Europe and drawing inspiration from the work of early photographic pioneers Hill and Adamson.

The Botanics will be hosting a weekend of special activities to celebrate the official launch of an 18th century cottage, which has been painstakingly rebuilt at the attraction.
The Filmhouse will stage a month of specially-chosen films inspired by the tourism campaign, which coincides with the unveiling of ten new art, design, fashion, science and technology galleries at the National Museum of Scotland in the summer.

TOURISM INDUSTRY RATTLED – TOURISTS THINK TWICE ABOUT VISITING PARIS

www.hovedsteder.blogg.no is a Norway-based blog about the capitals of the world, With a focus on tourism and travel, the environment, diplomatic affairs, lifestyle, culture and entertainment, food and drink. See also our travel blog at www.minbestereise.blogg.no – Contact us at [email protected]

Fresh violence on the streets of Paris and bomb threats against Air France flights have rattled the global tourism industry, with travelers from wealthy Asian nations thinking twice about trips to Europe, http://tenplay.com.au / Reuters reported.

Tour operators cancelled package trips and some predicted a further slowdown in bookings as jittery travelers hold off on immediate plans or look to go elsewhere.

Some big-spending Chinese tourists are shunning Paris for now and opting instead to visit Germany and other European cities in the wake of the second major attack this year on the French capital.

Some Chinese visiting Paris last weekend swiftly diverted to Switzerland, said Jane Chen at travel firm Ctrip in Shanghai.

More than two million Chinese were expected to visit France, the world’s leading tourist destination, this year, up from 1.7 million last year, according to Chinese state media citing the country’s ambassador to France.

For Japanese, France is the 12th most popular travel destination.

The likely blip in foreign arrivals will further pressure the French economy, particularly if tourist unease lasts through the Christmas season. Tourism generates more than seven per cent of annual GDP, with Paris alone drawing in 32.2 million visitors last year.

“I still want to go to Paris, but after this incident I won’t go within a year,” Vickie Zheng, a 27-year-old realtor in Shanghai said.

“My impression of Paris is that it’s a romantic city, but after this I think the security situation has been neglected and there are risks. If I was travelling this would influence me,” Li Maoqing, 29, a Shanghai salesman added.

Dennis Bunnik, Chairman of Council of Australian Tour Operators Inc, said clients are “definitely nervous,” though this is currently low season for travelling to Europe.

“People have realized that terrorism can happen anywhere, so if your time’s up, then unfortunately you’d get caught in it,” he said.

“What this sort of incident would do is delay people booking, but won’t stop them from travelling.”

Washington Marriott.

Den nye kjeden får mer enn én million rom i over hundre land.
