Caracas

Four Seasons has opened reservations for the second of its hotels in the Colombian capital, Bogota, reports ttgmedia.com

Four Seasons Hotel Bogota is a reworking of the city’s former Hotel Charleston and when it opens in April, the group said it will “usher in a new era in luxury hospitality in one of the world’s most exciting destinations”.

The completely remodelled building joins the just-opened Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogota.

More than half of the Four Seasons Hotel Bogota inventory will be suites and all have been designed by Lauren Rotett, of US practice Rotett Studio, which has an extensive portfolio of corporate and hospitality projects.

The hotel is in the heart of the city’s Zona T, where there are several blocks of pedestrian-only streets with restaurants, nightspots and Calle de la Moda, or Fashion Avenue.

“Our two Four Seasons hotels in Bogota complement each other, and both are unlike any other in the world,” said general manager Luis Argote, who grew up in the city.

Bathrooms have been completely replaced, and in-room technology overhauled throughout, while a new spa will offer treatments by French brand Biologique Recherche.

Four Seasons will also launch Kuru, overseen by chef Pablo Penalosa and inspired by Japanese robata grill cooking. The grill features prominently at the centre of the restaurant, which also has a sushi bar and has been given streetfront and back terraces by designer Saul Sasson.

When Jorge Rausch and his brothers founded Criterion 13 years ago in Zona G in Bogota, capital city of Colombia, there were only a few other restaurants in the area. Bogota didn’t have many renowned dining establishments at the time, and even fewer were known outside of the nation, reports The City Paper Bogota.

Criterion has since solidified its reputation, however, and was recently named the best restaurant in the country for the third straight year by The World’s Best, an annual list of the globe’s top locations sponsored by S. Pellegrino.

LIMA WAS 2015’s MOST VISITED CITY IN LATIN AMERICA

Lima

2015 was a good year for tourism in Lima, capital city of Peru – more tourists visited Lima than any other Latin American city, reports peruthisweek.com

More than 4.22 million tourists visited Lima in 2015, according to Mastercard’s report, “Global Destination Cities Index”, according to Gestion.

This represents a 7% increase compared to 2014.

President of the National Chamber of Tourism, Jorge Jochamowitz, estimates that tourism in Lima would increase again by 7% in the coming year, but would have a hard time staying ahead of Brazil for the Olympics.

Lima has experienced one of the greatest growths in tourism in the world over the previous years according to Gestion. And this year, the growth was driven primarily by the international conferences of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, in addition to the growing popularity of gastronomy.

Next year will present various challenges to maintaining its number one position for the Olympics in Brazil and El Nino.

“In 2016 the growth of 7% should repeat itself from this year. The first months will be affected for the fear of circulated information in the world of the phenomenon El Niño. And with the Olympics in Brazil, the same thing could happen as with the World Cup when the travelers prefered to go there,” said Jochamowitz, according to Gestion.

QUITO TOURISM IS CONFIDENT OF ENDING THE YEAR WITH 5% MORE VISITORS

The Ecuadorean capital city of Quito is confident that it will reach 740,000 tourists by the year-end, which will represent a 5% increase over the previous year, according to the city’s tourism office.

The authorities also reported that for the third consecutive year Quito has been chosen as South America’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards, tourism-review.com reports.

Quito tourism numbers exceeded half a million visitors in the first nine months of the year, 48% of all arrivals in Ecuador, which is 5% more than the number of visitors recorded in the first nine months of the previous year. If this trend continues, the city authorities estimate that Quito will welcome one million visitors in 2019.

These favorable figures enabled the city for the Third consecutive year to receive the award for Leading South American Destination at the World Travel Awards, known as the Tourism “Oscars”. Such recognition gives Quito remarkable global exposure as a tourist destination and contributes to the Quito tourism numbers.

Additionally, in 2015 Quito Tourism has been awarded the distinctive Brand Q by the Ecuadorean Ministry of Tourism in recognition of the work done in strengthening the quality of service delivery.

In this regard it offered this year’s “Bucket Pass”, which provides access to five of the city’s attractions (the Centre of the Earth, the Company, the City Museum, the Chapel of Man and Quito Tour Bus) at a reduced price and other advantages, such as online access and flexibility of use.

Quito also maintains its goal of becoming one of the region’s most competitive destinations in the meetings and conventions segment. In September Ecuador’s capital hosted the first staging of the Meeting Industry Conference, a meeting that specializes in business tourism.

Also, at the end of 2016, the city will have a new convention centre located in the terminal of the old Quito airport for important international meetings to be held next year.

So far, twenty events have been confirmed, most notably Habitat III, the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, and the VII Latin American Congress of Tourism Research, among others.

Montevideo

Uruguay’s Ministry of Tourism put tour guides on public buses, the main form of transportation in the capital, to mark World Tourism Day, which was being celebrated on Sunday, giving residents and visitors alike a different way to look at Montevideo, www.foxnews.com reported.

Professional tour guides regaled riders on Saturday with stories about the history of the capital and its different monuments, neighborhoods and buildings.

The project’s goal is to “get people who regularly ride the bus without looking out the windows to approach the ride like a tourist,” viewing what they are used to “with a different level of interest,” Mary Linich, one of the tour guides, said.

The tour guides shared stories about iconic houses and places, such as the nearly 22-kilometer (13-mile) boulevard that runs around Montevideo’s beaches, Linich said.

“A general look at what a tourist can get to learn about,” Linich said, adding that Montevideo, home to about half of Uruguay’s 3.4 million people, is the main destination of most tourists.

Among the places pointed out by the tour guides was Independence Plaza, dominated by the monument to Jose Gervasio Artigas (1764-1850), Uruguay’s greatest national hero, who is remembered for his role in the River Plate Revolution of 1810.

“People really paid attention and later applauded, so it’s been a good experience,” Linich said, adding that she worked for four hours on five different routes.

The Montevideo city government and public transportation company Uruguay Cutcsa helped develop the project.

New Zealand will open an embassy in Bogota, Colombia, next year, to reflect the growing trade relations between the two countries, Radio New Zealand International reports.

New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully said Colombia was an increasingly important partner for New Zealand, and had one of the strongest performing economies in South America.

With a population of more than 46 million and solid growth, there were numerous opportunities in Colombia for New Zealand businesses, particularly in areas such as education and investment, he said.

The embassy will be New Zealand’s fifth post in Latin America.

The Israeli Embassy in Asuncion, Paraguay, has been reopened, after having been closed since 2002, along with 15 other Israeli embassies and consulates around the world, due to budgetary constraints.

This is the third of the 15 to be re-opened. The Israeli Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand, reopened in 2010. The Israeli Foreign Ministry has announced that the re-opening would “promote cooperation and dialogue and bilateral trade and sports and cultural activities. It will also sustain the connection with the 6,000-strong Jewish community in New Zealand.

Also in 2010, Israel re-opened its consulate in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Sao Paolo is the largest city in the southern hemisphere, and serves as an industrial, economic and communications center for all of Latin America. The city also has a large, 80,000-strong Jewish community.

Still closed, however, are the embassies or consulates in Marseilles, France; Sydney, Australia; Harare, Zimbabwe; Minsk, Belarus; Montreal, Canada and others.

Paraguay will reopen it’s embassy in Israel soon, after an eight year absence.

Orange officials have unveiled a 4G timeline for French Guiana, with a commercial launch anticipated in 2016, reports www.telegeography.com

Vincent Poujol, CEO of Orange Caraibes, visited the capital Cayenne earlier this month and shared details of the Company’s planned Long Term Evolution (LTE) rollout at a media event.

While Orange is still waiting for permission to launch from watchdog Arcep, Mr Poujol confirmed that the infrastructure has already been upgraded in selected areas.

Since September 2014 the telco has been testing 4G technology in the capital, as well as the coastal city of Macouria. Going forward, LTE technology will be rolled out in Kaw, Camopi and Saint-Laurent.

In addition, Orange seeks to deploy fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology to around 30,000 properties by 2021. The telco’s fibre deployment will commence in September 2015, connecting around 8,600 Cayenne homes by 2016.

The suburbs of Remire-Montjoly and Matoury will be first in line for the rollout.
