The first Kuwaiti embassy in a Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country, Guyana, is still on the cards, according to diplomats working to see this proposal come to fruition, seeing the Gulf country opening an embassy in Guyana’s capital city Georgetown, caribbeannews.com reports.
This may also very well be the first Arab diplomatic mission in a CARICOM country, and would be a significant development for the regional Community.
Former governments of Guyana made great strides in expanding their country’s diplomatic presence with all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries — Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — and started the process of forging diplomatic relations with the GCC states.
Guyana also became a member of the bloc of Islamic countries, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Only 7 percent of Guyana’s population of 735,000 are Muslims.

Det tyske flyselskapet Lufthansa stanser alle flyginger til Venezuelas hovedstad Caracas på grunn av den økonomiske situasjonen i landet, melder NRK.
Selskapet flyr tre ganger i uken fra Frankfurt am Main til Caracas, men fra og med 17. juni stanses flygningene inntil videre.
Venezuela har lenge vært i en dyp politisk, økonomisk og sosial krise.

En ny rute mellom London Heathrow og Chiles hovedstad Santiago blir British Airways’ (BA) lengste direkterute, med en flytid på 14 timer og 40 minutter.
Dette er en time lenger enn dagens lengste flyrute, som er på 13 timer og 50 minutter mellom London og Buenos Aires, hovedstaden i Argentina, skriver Travelnews.no
Ruten starter opp tirsdag 3. januar 2017.
– De seneste årene har vi økt våre tjenester til Sør- og Mellom-Amerika, noe som reflekterer områdets vekst i både næringsliv og turisme. Takket være sin enestående og varierte natur og gode mat og vin, appellerer Chile særlig til turister som ønsker en ferie hvor de kan utforske landet de besøker, sier Peter Rasmussen, Nord-Europa sjef for British Airways, til nettstedet.
Den nye ruten får fire ukentlige avganger og skal betjenes av selskapets nyeste flytype, Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner med fire klasser om bord, inkludert en ny førsteklasse.
Flyselskapet åpnet nylig også nye ruter til hovedstedene San Jose i Costa Rica og Lima i Peru. I tillegg flyr BA til både Rio de Janeiro og Sao Paulo i Brasil.
Selskapet har flere daglige avganger til London Heathrow fra Oslo, Stavanger og Bergen, ifølge Travelnews.

Flere hundre mennesker deltok i marsjen for å presse landets omstridte, og stadig mer upopulære sosialistiske president Nicolás Maduro til å tillate en folkeavstemning mot ham.

Nå er enda en varegruppe føyet til lista, nemlig øl. Landets største bryggeri, Cerveceria Polar, som ligger i delstaten Carabobo, har stanset virksomheten på grunn av finanskrisen og mangel på råvarer og forsyninger.
Bryggeriet har 70 prosent av øl-markedet i landet.
Den tidligere bussjåføren, fagforeningslederen og mangeårige utenriksministeren Nicolas Maduro (53) var vise-president da han i 2013 tok over som landets statsoverhode etter at president Hugo Chavez døde, etter å ha ledet landet i 14 år.

Piotr Kaszuba, Ambassador of Poland to Venezuela, and accredited to nine more countries, including Guyana, has officially opened the Honorary Consulate of Poland in Guyana’s capital city Georgetown, the Stabroek News can report.
A press release from the consulate said that Mr Ramesh Persaud, was inaugurated as the Honorary Consul of Poland, Mr Persaud is the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Private Enterprise Development Ltd.

Paraguay has been added to the list of countries jointly hosting the Dakar Rally (formerly known as The Paris Dakar Rally) with the 2017 edition starting in its capital Asunción, organizers announced yesterday, The Buenos Aires Herald can report.
The 2017 Dakar Rally will have 12 stages covering between 8,000 to 9,000 kilometres of gruelling South American terrain.
It will be the ninth time the marathon car, motorbike and lorry race has been held in South America after switching from western Africa, with the dates being January 2-14.
After a single opening stage in Paraguay, the route will take an international field of contestants into Bolivia for five stages, passing through the capital La Paz, at the height of 3,500 metres.
Then Argentina will be the stage for the final week of the rally which will make its way down the Andes mountain range to finish once again in Buenos Aires.
“The event will now head to its 29th different country, Paraguay, for a stay in the capital city, Asunción,” race director Etienne Lavigne said.
“The visit to Bolivia will take on a new dimension on this 39th edition, with five stages in total for jaunts along the shores of Lake Titicaca and a rest day in the highest capital city in the world, La Paz.”
“The money time will finally come for the title contenders on a diagonal drawn on the map of Argentina towards the loyal Buenos Aires.”
“The Dakar Rally will be an exceptional way for promoting our country. This edition will be a more sustainable race, more focused on social issues, optimizing the resources and improving the promotion of tourist destinations,” Argentina’s Minister of Tourism Gustavo Santos said.
This year’s car race was won by Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel with the motorbike honours going to Australian Toby Price.
