The first Kuwaiti embassy in a Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country, Guyana, is still on the cards, according to diplomats working to see this proposal come to fruition, seeing the Gulf country opening an embassy in Guyana’s capital city Georgetown, caribbeannews.com reports.
This may also very well be the first Arab diplomatic mission in a CARICOM country, and would be a significant development for the regional Community.
Former governments of Guyana made great strides in expanding their country’s diplomatic presence with all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries — Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — and started the process of forging diplomatic relations with the GCC states.
Guyana also became a member of the bloc of Islamic countries, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Only 7 percent of Guyana’s population of 735,000 are Muslims.
