Vienna Tourist Board Press Release:

The Austrian capital city Vienna has recorded its best ever year for business events in 2015, with meetings up 3 per cent and economic activity surpassing 1 billion euro for the first time.

The Vienna Convention Bureau announced the record figures, which included 1,392 congresses and 2,293 corporate events, leading to a 13 per cent increase of overnight stays of 1,682,966.

In total, the meetings industry had a value of 1,038.5 million euros.

Vienna Tourist Board director of tourism Norbert Kettner said: “Congratulations to everyone involved in Vienna’s meetings industry, as they have played their part in achieving the best results in Vienna’s history as a meeting destination.”

“Our city hosted a total of 3,685 conferences and corporate events in 2015, which represents a rise of 3 per cent on the total reported in 2014. The number of overnight stays attributable to these events came to 1,682,966, an increase of 13 per cent and equivalent to 12 per cent of all bed nights recorded in Vienna in 2014.

“Across the board, results surpassed the levels set in 2012, which was a record breaking year for the meetings industry, and the findings of the 2014-2016 study add to the positive picture: they show Vienna as a meeting destination that lives up to the ‘global – smart – premium’ criteria enshrined in the capital’s 2020 tourism strategy.”

The bureau said conference participants spent on average 534 euros (£431) each.

The break-down of meeting numbers were: 1,392 congresses (down 5 per cent), where 649 were national (down 4 per cent) and 743 international (down 5 per cent); 2,293 (up 8 per cent) corporate events, where 1,049 were national (up 26 per cent) and 1,244 international (down 4 per cent).

Christian Mutschlechner, head of the Vienna Convention Bureau, added: “Although it is true that there were fewer international congresses, the figures show a greater number of large-scale conferences for 2015 than in 2014. They not only attract more participants, but also last longer, both of which factors have an effect on overnight stays and revenue. A single event like this simply induces more economic impact at a single stroke.”

Some of the major events held last year include the European Congress of Radiology (20,000 delegates), the World Publishing Expo (8,000) and European Geosciences Union General Assembly (14,000).

Østerrikes hovedstad Wien er verdens beste by å bo i, mens Bagdad, hovedstaden i Irak, er verdens verste.

EVERY FOURTH VIENNA CAFE “FORCED TO CLOSE”

Vienna is famous for its coffee house culture, which has been recognised by Unesco as part of Austria’s cultural heritage, but many of its cafes are struggling to survive.

Every year one in four cafes is forced to close, according to new figures from the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, reports thelocal.at

Berndt Querfeld, who owns the historic Cafe Landtmann on the Ringstrasse and represents coffee houses in the Chamber of Commerce told the Kurier newspaper that the majority of the 2,500 coffee houses in Vienna are finding it hard to make ends meet. “The ones that are doing best are the around 120 or 130 historic coffee houses in the most favourable locations,” he said.

However, despite some cafes having to close up shop the total number of coffee houses remains around the same because of the relatively high number of new cafes opening each year. “Many of these only last for about six months,” Querfeld said. He added that newcomers on the scene underestimate the challenges that lie ahead, and some simply close down their business to avoid paying a high tax bill.

According to Querfeld some of the reasons why cafes are suffering are the stricter rules regarding non-smoking areas, the new EU law which means they have to label all ingredients that contain allergens, and the introduction of compulsory cash registers as part of the tax reform.

The economic crisis has made punters behave more frugally when visiting a coffee house. “More often than not a customer will order a piece of cake with a second fork for their companion. It’s even becoming a rather chic thing to do.”

Slot machines have also been banned from cafes recently, and Querfeld believes that this is putting many smaller cafes in less central locations out of business. “If they had a slot machine or two they could afford to sell snacks and drinks at lower prices, but this isn’t the case anymore.”

The heyday of the Vienna coffee house was the turn of the 19th century when they were frequented by well-known writers, artists and politicians. Many famous Viennese cafes had to close in the 1950s due to the popularity of television and new espresso bars.

Two Polish tourists became the first in 55 years to be trapped in Vienna’s famous big Ferris wheel after staff packed up and went home, reports the local.at

The couple had been the last to board the Wiener Riesenrad – which is German for Vienna Giant Wheel – at the end of the day, and a staff member decided to allow them around one more time.

But they handed over the controls to a colleague, who was unaware the couple were on board, and he switched the lights off and went home.

Company boss Peter Petritsch said: “Something like this has simply never happened to us in 55 years.”

He said there were two members of staff on duty when the couple asked if they could go on the wheel for a romantic trip just before it closed. He said the second staff member had not realised and switched everything off.

The two Polish tourists had reportedly at first enjoyed the romantic view but eventually became bored and after being stuck for 40 minutes they decided to use their mobile phones to call for help.

A staff member quickly arrived on the scene, and arranged for the pair to be brought back to the ground where they were given a bottle of champagne to say sorry.

The 64.75-metre (212-foot) tall Ferris wheel at the entrance of the Prater amusement park in Vienna is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.

It was the world’s tallest extant Ferris wheel from 1920 until 1985 and most famously appeared in the post-war Orson Welles film The Third Man, which was released in 1949.

Tourists from the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) region are continuing to travel to Vienna in increasing numbers, with 2015 already proving to be another record-breaking year for arrivals and overnights in Austria’s capital city, HotelierMiddleEast.com reported.

Between January and October 2015, overnights from the UAE have increased 48.2% compared to 2014, recording 110,663 so far.

Recent figures from the Vienna tourism board also show arrivals have seen a similar growth, with 50,891 from the UAE, up by 44.8% when compared with the previous year.

Saudi Arabia also recorded a 20.4% growth in overnights in the city, and arrivals increased by 19.4%.

More than 80% of visitors to Vienna are coming from outside the country’s borders.

In total 13.5 million overnight stays were reported in 2014, the largest markets were German, Austrian, USA, Italy and Russia; guests from the GCC made up for approximately 295,000 overnight stays.

Julia Jakoubek, team manager of digital marketing at Vienna Tourist Board said: “We have been advertising Vienna on the Arabian market for some time now, but this is our first partnership with a local online travel agency on a large scale. Working with musafir.com will help us showcase to Arabian travelers that Vienna offers everything for a perfect holiday.”

Musafir.com also aims to play a vital role in acquiring customers through its mobile travel app which was launched earlier this year and aspires to have 100,000 active users by end of 2015.
