Hungaryʼs Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó officially has opened the Hungarian Embassy in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, on Friday, the Budapest Business Journal reported.

The embassy will help enhance Hungaryʼs presence in the Pacific region, promote trade relations and effectively enforce economic policy objectives, Foreign Minister Szijjártó said.

Hungary is the eighth European Union country to open an embassy in New Zealand, and the second Central European country after Poland.

Mr. Szijjártó noted the potential for cooperation with New Zealand in car and machinery manufacturing, water management and water technology, and thermal water-related infrastructure developments.

He added that Eximbank has opened a USD 720 million credit line to help Hungarian companies enter the New Zealand market.

Hungaryʼs exports to New Zealand increased by 12% last year compared to 2015, to exceed USD 50 million, Szijjártó said.

Mr.Szijjártó added that he also held talks with his New Zealand counterpart Murray McCully and Attorney-General Chris Finlayson.

The Hungarian minister said he started talks on several bilateral agreements including one on avoiding double taxation.

Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó also opened a Hungary-New Zealand business forum in Auckland.

Wellington and Canberra look to become sister cities

Wellington

Wellington city is edging closer to gaining a new sister city. Mayor Celia Wade-Brown has proposed Australia’s federal capital city, Canberra, to become New Zealand’s capital’s next sister city, the stuff.co.nz website can report.

Canberra

The city council of Wellington will consider whether to formalise the relationship between the two cities in a full council meeting next week.

Australian Capital Territory chief minister Andrew Barr is ready to sign the deal when he visits Wellington in early July.

Mayor Wade-Brown, who visited Canberra in April, said the new deal would bring the cities closer together, forging stronger economic, environmental, political, cultural and tourism ties.

“Together the capital cities will be stronger and have more impact on the global stage,” she said.

“Wellington and Canberra have a lot in common and this relationship will help equip both cities for long-term success.”

Businesses that provided services to the government sector had an obvious opportunity to expand, and the recent agreement with Singapore Airlines to fly from Singapore to Wellington with a stop-over in Canberra, was an example of what had already been achieved.

From September there will be four flights a week between Wellington and Canberra, connecting to Singapore.

Wellington’s twin cities are Sydney, capital of New South Wales, Australia; the Chinese capital Beijing, Xiamen in China, Harrogate in England, Hania in Crete, Greece; and Sakai in Japan.

Canberra’s two sister cities are Beijing, and Nara in Japan.

One of the world’s most prestigious airlines could soon be landing in Wellington, with Singapore Airlines expected to launch a new jumbo service between the trans-Tasman capital cities.

After months of negotiations, the airline is expected to announce a new Airbus A330 service between Canberra and Wellington on January 20, tied to a new Canberra-Singapore service.

Wellington Airport, the Wellington City Council and Singapore Airlines all declined to confirm the new route on Tuesday, after news broke across the Tasman.

UNNTAKSTILSTAND PÅ TONGA ETTER AT SYKLON FEIDE INNOVER ØYRIKET

Flere hundre mennesker er evakuert fra hjemmene sine etter at syklonen Ula feide innover øyriket Tonga i Stillehavet lørdag, skriver Nettavisen.

For å minimere skadene hadde statsminister Akilisi Pohiva erklært unntakstilstand før syklonen Ula rammet.

ARTIFICIAL SURF REEF PROPOSED IN WELLINGTON

Wellington’s Lyall Bay has been surfed for more than a century, and locals are worried the airport’s runway extension plans could kill some of the city’s best waves, reports Radio New Zealand.

The airport plans to extend the runway another 350m into the water, and that will affect the peakiness of the waves, cutting the number of surf rides in parts of the bay by nearly a Third.

“This is a very special place for us here in Wellington,” Wellington Boardriders Club president James Whitaker said.

“A lot of people have surfed Lyall Bay, especially the break known as ‘The Corner’, which is the break that runs parallel to the runway. And there’s also a lot of people who on a nice day come down to the beach and watch the spectacle, not just those who take part.

“It would be such a shame if the construction of an extension ruined what’s there, because it’s a very special thing.”

The bay is considered the city’s safest, most reliable break, and the shape of the bay helps focus the waves. At just 15 minutes from the central business district by car, it is undeniably convenient.

But it is also quite a particular beach. In 2014, there were only 125 days where the waves were surfable and only 38 of those days had “very good surf”.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION FOR THE LORD OF THE RINGS PRODUCER PETER JACKSON-BACKED MOVIE MUSEUM IN WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND

Sir Peter Jackson

Plans for a film museum and convention centre in the heart of Wellington have been given the go-ahead, Radio New Zealand reports.

Wellington city councillors has voted unanimously to build the $134 million, multi-purpose venue opposite Te Papa. Previous plans for a five-star Hilton hotel on the site have been scrapped.

The convention centre, capable of hosting 1100 people, will be run by the council. It will in turn lease out land to The Movie Museum Ltd, a company formed by New Zealand film director and producer Sir Peter Jackson (director and producer of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy) and New Zealand filmmaker Sir Richard Taylor.

Museum project director said George Hickton it would showcase movie memorabilia from films and television shows produced within the city.

The council predicted the project would generate about $38 million a year for the capital.

Wellington’s deputy mayor Justin Lester told Morning Report it would be a drawcard for international tourists.

“This project will become synonymous with Wellington, you know for an international tourist coming to New Zealand, I think this will be the most significant man-made attraction so I think it’s going to be really really large, it will put Wellington front and centre on the tourist map, so we’ll see a lot more people coming to Wellington. No one will bypass the city.”

Wellington is not the only city proposing to build a convention centre. Projects are under way or planned for Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown.
