Vilnius Airport is believed to be the first airport in Eastern and Northern Europe to open its own airside ‘cinema’, www.airport-world.com reported.
Located in the departure lounge and boasting just a few dozen seats, it may not be the fanciest cinema in the world, but the new addition to the airport’s facilities is expected to prove a big hit with passengers.
According to the airport, the FilmBox LT cinema will excluslvely show short movies, documentaries and cartoons by Lithuanian filmakers.
It says that the idea of an “unconventional passenger lounge” at Vilnius Airport was implemented in co-operation with the Lithuanian Film Centre and will remain on site until the end of the year.
Gediminas Almantas, CEO at SE Lithuanian Airports, says: “People spent a lot of time at Vilnius Airport. We care about our passengers and their good mood, therefore we have established the cinema, where passengers will have an opportunity to relax before the flight as well as to become familiar with the Lithuanian cinema.”
The first FilmBox LT ambassador – Nelë Savièenko, a film and theatre actress, winner of the National Culture and Art Prize – was introduced during the opening of the cinema hall.
She promised to spread the word about the unusual cinema at Vilnius Airport and the contemporary Lithuanian cinema in Lithuania and abroad.
“This is one of the finest examples in Lithuania and elsewhere of how business and cultural institutions can co-operate by focusing on feelings and experiences of people rather than profit”, notes Liana Ruokytë-Jonsson, one of the initiators of FilmBox LT, the Head of Film Distribution, Information and Heritage Division of the Lithuanian Film Centre.
The first visitors of the cinema hall watched the 11-minute film ‘Forest’, created by Ignas Meilûnas this year and premiered at the film festival ‘Kino Pavasaris’.
The film repertoire will be regularly changed to show as many works of our country’s cinema makers as possible.
All films are shown in Lithuanian with English subtitles.
The future plans of FilmBox LT include introducing full-length movies to Vilnius Airport passengers.
FilmBox LT cinema hall is located in the renewed departure area of Vilnius Airport next to the gate A2.
Its working hours are adapted to the flight schedule ? films are shown from the first to the last flight of the day.

Litauen har tre flyplasser og en havn. Fergen til det Kuriske nes, og byen Klaipeda, går fra den svenske byen Karlshamn hver kveld, og ankommer neste morgen, direkte til sanddyner og solstoler.
Klaipeda er en typisk sommerby med mange barer, restauranter og underholdning, samt milevis med sanddyner og flotte badevennlige strender.

Israel åpnet ambassade i Litauens hovedstad Vilnius torsdag 12.mars. Det er første gang Israel har egen ambassade i landet, og har dekket Litauen gjennom sin ambassade i Riga i Latvia siden de baltiske landene igjen ble selvstendige i 1991. Litauen åpnet ambassade i Israel i 1992.
Før 2.verdenskrig var hver fjerde innbygger i Vilnius jødisk, og i hele landet bodde det 250,000 jøder, av en befolkning på 2,4 millioner. De aller fleste litauiske jødene omkom, eller flyktet, under den tyske okkupasjonen. I dag bor det ca.3000 jøder i landet, og de utgjør bare 0,1 prosent av befolkningen.
Disse og andre historiske og kulturelle fakta omkring jødene i Litauen, var et av mange tema under åpningsseremonien av ambassaden.
Under seremonien festet en rabbi en mezuzah til døråpningen på ambassaden, i tråd med jødisk tradisjon. En mezuzah er en liten sylindrisk beholder som i jødiske hjem og offentlige bygninger festes på dørkarmen til oppholdsrom. Sylinderen inneholder en pergamentrull med to hebraiske skriftsteder. I begge disse teksene omtales at bønnen skal festes til dørkarmen – Mezuzah.

Vilnius will be included in the #European-gauge railroad project #Rail #Baltica 2, agreed the three #Baltic countries? transport ministers during a meeting in the #Lithuanian #capital on April 28, said the Lithuanian Transport #Ministry?s Development Department Director Arenijus Jackus to Verslo zinios. ?Of course, implementation of the project will depend on the available funding,? added Jackus.
Deputy Minister of Transport Arijandas Sliupas in a statement said ?Today?s meeting between representatives of the ministries of transport of the three Baltic States was productive – Lithuania, #Latvia and #Estonia reached a political decision to include Vilnius in the Rail Baltica project.?
The standard gauge railway track will connect #Helsinki, #Tallinn, #Riga, Vilnius and #Warsaw, and will be extended to #Berlin. The European Union will fund 85 percent of the project cost. The total length of the Rail Baltica track in Lithuania will constitute approximately 360 kilometers, in Latvia around 300 km, and in Estonia also around 300 km.
According to Jackus, the three countries? expert task force will now have to work on incorporation of the agreement in the pending Rail Baltica joint venture company?s shareholders agreement. The company will manage the project. This is likely to happen during a meeting in Riga this month, reports LETA.
At a meeting in Vilnius last September, the transport ministers of #Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and #Finland signed a declaration on the establishment of a joint venture company which also mentioned Vilnius. The joint venture company was to be set up by January 2014; however, its establishment was postponed as the Baltic countries were unable to reach agreement on inclusion of Vilnius in the project.
A few weeks ago, a meeting was held in Brussels that was also attended by the #European Commission?s representatives, during which Lithuania?s representatives were told that including Vilnius in the Rail Baltica project would be against EU regulations, and the compromises offered by Lithuania were turned down. Lithuania was reproached for hampering implementation of the project, where the total amount of investment is estimated at almost 4 billion euros. Pavel Telicka, the coordinator of the project, said that Brussels did not understand why Lithuania had changed its original position. Lithuania at first wanted the Rail Baltica railway to go through #Kaunas. He had also said that the Baltic countries needed to establish the joint venture company in the coming weeks if they hoped to apply for the EU funds on schedule.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius then changed the original design, throwing the project into doubt, when he said the government would do everything in its power to have Vilnius added to the route, explaining that this was vitally important for the Lithuanian economy.
