The Italian Cabinet has approved the proposal put forward by Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni to open three new embassies: in Niger’s capital city Niamey, in Guinea’s capital Conakry, and in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, mareeg.com reported.

The opening of an embassy in Niamey gives Italy an important operating advantage in the light of the current dynamics in the Sahel region, which could have repercussions on the security of Italy and Europe, and of Niger’s role in stabilising the region, according to the Italian Foreign Ministry.

The reopening of the embassy in Conakry (closed in 1998) follows Guinea’s revived dynamism within the region and the enormous potential of furthering bilateral cooperation, especially in business relations and in managing migration flows from West Africa.

The reopening of the embassy in Santo Domingo (closed in 2014) confirms the existence of sound bilateral political, economic and cultural ties, in the perspective to further strengthening them in the future.

The embassy will also be responsible for the interests held by Italy in several Caribbean countries, which are currently promoted by the embassy in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela.

Japan will open an embassy in Barbados by next February

Word of this from the country’s new Ambassador to Barbados Mitsuhiko Okada during a recent courtesy call on acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Steve Blackett, Barbados Today reports.

Okada, who will serve initially as Chargé d’Affaires of the new embassy, revealed that it would be formally opened in February 2016 .

He also expressed thanks to the Government of Barbados for support in getting the embassy operational.

Blackett pledged the continued assistance of the Government while outlining areas for possible cooperation, including culture and education.

In this regard, Ambassador Okada noted that in February 2016 a group of Japanese drummers would visit the island. He also pointed out that so far 26 Barbadians had participated in the Japan Exchange & Teaching Programme, which sees these persons teaching English in Japanese schools and he expressed the hope that this cooperation would continue.

Other areas discussed were renewable energy, disaster preparedness and climate change.

With regards to trade and investment, Ambassador Okada recommended that consideration be given to arranging a business/trade fair which would educate Japanese business people about products and investment opportunities which Barbados has to offer.

While acknowledging that the island was a great distance from Japan, the Ambassador said the Japanese were prolific travellers. He also pointed out that cruises were becoming increasingly popular with Japanese, while highlighting tourism as another area for cooperation.

Barbados and Japan established diplomatic relations in 1967, a year after Barbados’ independence from Britain.

Japan is today represented in Barbados by a honorary consulate.

ST.LUCIA TOURISM MINISTER SAYS PRIDE IN COUNTRY WILL HELP KEEP CAPITAL CITY CASTRIES CLEAN

Saint Lucia’s Tourism Minister, Lorne Theophilus, has declared that a lot more can be done to keep the capital city of Castries clean, stluciatimes.com reports.

However the minister believes the issue of keeping the city clean is not only a function of the agencies that are responsible for the upkeep of the capital.

“We need to look at the source of the uncleanliness and it is basically what is being done by our very own people,” Minister Theophilus told the St LuciaTimes.

According to Mr.Theopilus, there is need to instill greater respect for this country.

He also stated that Saint Lucians need to respect themselves as well.

The minister believes that in this way, citizens will do what is necessary to contribute to keeping Castries clean.

“We have Saint Lucians who on regular basis leave our jurisdiction and travel overseas and the things that they would not do overseas, they feel very comfortable doing within their very own country, so it calls for a greater sense of pride in our very own people and in our country,” Mr.Theopilus asserted.

The minister observed that a greater sense of pride would greatly assist the agencies responsible in what they need to do to keep Castries clean.

Stray dogs, garbage, indiscriminate urination around Castries and dilapidated buildings – especially the CDC apartments on Jeremie Street, have been cited as contributing to making the capital city lose its appeal to both locals and visitors.

JAMAICA LOBBY FOR KINGSTON TO BE UNESCO-RECOGNIZED

Kingston

Tourism authorities in Jamaica are lobbying for the capital city of Kingston to be designated a Creative City by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – UNESCO, caribbean360.com reports.

A Jamaican delegation is making a case for the designation at the ongoing UNESCO World Creative City Forum in Japan.

Senior Director in the Entertainment Division of the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment, Gillian Wilkinson McDaniel, who is heading the discussions in Japan, expressed confidence that Kingston will be ascribed the prestigious designation.

“We have a very long and very stored history in terms of entertainment and so we are hopeful and we are confident, quite frankly, because we made a very strong application and we are looking forward to being designated,” she said ahead of the trip.

She noted that the team would be highlighting Jamaica’s contribution of over six genres of music to the industry.

State Minister with responsibility for Entertainment, Damion Crawford, said this is part of efforts to reduce the geographical seasonality of tourism in Jamaica, by rebranding the city as a place for visitors to travel for Entertainment.

“We are rebranding Kingston to say that Jamaica is now not just the North Coast, but Jamaica in total is open for business. The designation as a Creative City also leads to exposure, and consciousness leads to consumption,” he said.

The state minister added that this designation would also result in the provision of grant funding for selected projects to develop the creative sector in Kingston.

“The importance of that should not be understated. Places like Trench Town for example could now be better recognised and be better marketed,” he said.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with, and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban Development.

The Network is currently formed by 69 members from 32 countries covering seven creative fields: Crafts & Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Music and Media Arts.

Castries

Saint Lucia: The Member of Parliament for Castries Central, Richard Frederick, has said that Castries, capital of Saint Lucia, is not reflective of a city to which people would want to return, stluciatimes.com reported.

“I urge the authorities to put more emphasis on Castries Central, its cleanliness and its aesthetic appeal to the visitors to this country,” Frederick declared, noting that Saint Lucia is heavily dependent on tourism.

According to Mr.Frederick, whos a former Housing Minister, there is need to create an impression of the city that would instill in visitors a desire to return.

“Castries Central now leaves a lot to be desired,” he asserted.

The state of Castries has been the subject of much criticism, with both locals and visitors expressing concern about the cleanliness of the capital, the state of some of its buildings, the presence of vagrants and stray dogs roaming the streets, as well as indiscriminate urination in some areas.
