The Italian Cabinet has approved the proposal put forward by Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni to open three new embassies: in Niger’s capital city Niamey, in Guinea’s capital Conakry, and in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, mareeg.com reported.

The opening of an embassy in Niamey gives Italy an important operating advantage in the light of the current dynamics in the Sahel region, which could have repercussions on the security of Italy and Europe, and of Niger’s role in stabilising the region, according to the Italian Foreign Ministry.

The reopening of the embassy in Conakry (closed in 1998) follows Guinea’s revived dynamism within the region and the enormous potential of furthering bilateral cooperation, especially in business relations and in managing migration flows from West Africa.

The reopening of the embassy in Santo Domingo (closed in 2014) confirms the existence of sound bilateral political, economic and cultural ties, in the perspective to further strengthening them in the future.

The embassy will also be responsible for the interests held by Italy in several Caribbean countries, which are currently promoted by the embassy in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela.

UNESCO: – Jødene kan ikke knyttes til Tempelplassen. Israel bryter med FN-organisasjonen i protest

Tempelplassen i Israels hovedstad Jerusalem er kun hellig for muslimer, vedtok UNESCO torsdag. Israel raser.

Nir Barkat, borgermester i Jerusalem, er sint over UNESCOs vedtak.

Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway lay the foundation stone for the new Munch Museum at Bjørvika in Oslo in a formal ceremony Friday afternoon. The museum is planned to be completed in December 2019, the Royal Court’s website www.kongehuset.no reported.

The new museum (pictures) will be spacious enough to house the City of Oslo’s fabulous Munch collection comprising nearly 28 000 works. It will also house the collections of Rolf E. Stenersen, Amaldus Nielsen and Ludvig O. Ravensberg, and will have the capacity to mount larger international exhibitions.

Girls on the Bridge, 1901

The foundation stone contains a brooch and a mug from Fredrikstad, a seed from one of the apple trees at Edvard Munch’s home and studio at Ekely in Oslo , a twig from one of the cherry trees outside the current Munch Museum at Tøyen in Oslo, a copy of Munch’s will, earth from Munch’s birthplace at Løten, a roof shingle from the historic Vågå Stave Church which inspired Munch’s paintings in the Aula of the University of Oslo, and a smooth stone from the pebble beach at Åsgårdstrand where Munch painted Girls on the Bridge, among other works.

All of these artefacts come from places linked to the artist in some way. The foundation stone will be placed in the floor of the new museum.

The floors of the new Munch Museum will be built both below and above ground level. The building will rest on poles fixed in bedrock that is under water of up to 60 metres deep. The completed museum, with its characteristic tower, will reach 60 metres into the air.

Unlike many other art museums, the main functions of the new Munch Museum are organised on a vertical, rather than a horizontal, plane.

The building is comprised of a 13-storey  tower standing on a three-storey base. The closed portion of the tower, which will also be soundproofed, will contain the exhibition rooms, storage rooms and conservation rooms.

Edvard Munch (1863-1944), 1921

The open portion of the tower will contain circulation and rest spaces for visitors as well as entryways to the exhibition rooms

Athens mayor points to record year for city's tourism in 2015

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis told reporters on Tuesday that the Greek capital attracted some 4.1 million foreign visitors in 2015, while pointing to a ‘dramatic increase’ between 2014 and 2016, tornosnews.gr reported.

Mr Kaminis spoke at a press conference after the holding of the fourth annual Travel Trade Athens event.

The Athens mayor said it was the best figure ever for tourism arrivals in the Greek capital, which has seen its fair share of upheavals and social pressure during seven straight years of economic meltdown in the country.

Additionally, he promised that municipal duties – slapped on electricity bills – will have been reduced by 20 percent when his tenure is completed in 2019.

Monday morning Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway formally received the President and First Lady of Singapore, the Royal Court reported on their website www.kongehuset.no

President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Mrs Mary Tan are visiting Norway from 10 to 12 October. This is the first official State Visit from Singapore to Norway. The first two days of the programme will take place in Oslo, and the final day will be held in Tromsø, Northern Norway’s largest city.

Economic cooperation between Norway and Singapore is expanding quickly and is important for both countries. More than 250 Norwegian companies are established in Singapore, which is their most important gateway into the Asian markets.

The visit began with a formal welcoming ceremony on the Palace Square Monday morning.

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon accompanied President Tan and Mrs Tan to the Palace Square, where they were received by the King and Queen and Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

The traditional welcome is conducted as a formal ceremony. The King accompanied the visiting head of state on an inspection of a guard of honour from His Majesty The King’s Guard, and the national anthems of both countries are played.

From left to right: Her Highness Princess Astrid, Mrs Ferner (the King’s older sister), Her Majesty Queen Sonja, First Lady Mary Tan, His Excellency President Tony Tan Keng Yam, His Majesty King Harald, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon.

After the ceremony in the Palace Square, the entourage entered the Royal Palace, where official photographs were taken in the Bird Room. This was followed by an exchange of gifts in the White Parlour.

On the first day, it is also traditional for the visiting head of state to lay a wreath at the national monument commemorating the Norwegians who lost their lives in the Second World War. The King and Queen accompanied President Tan and Mrs Tan to Akershus Fortress for the ceremony.

Following the wreath-laying ceremony, President Tan visited the President of the Storting, Olemic Thommessen.

A new collection of seeds will be added to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Queen Sonja and Mrs Tan paid a visit to the Botanical Gardens in the Tøyen district of Oslo, where seeds from Singapore were presented.

Seeds from around the world are stored in the ‘doomsday vault’ on Svalbard, where genetic material from global food crops are being safeguarded for future generations. If a plant species is eradicated in a particular region due to war or other disaster, the plants can be recreated with seeds from the vault, where they are safely stored deep within the permafrost.

Queen Sonja and Mrs Tan had the opportunity to look more closely at another seed bank: the national seed bank for threatened Norwegian plant species at the Natural History Museum of Oslo. They also viewed a very special exhibition of jewellery created by artist Ingjerd Hanevold, in which all of the pieces are inspired by seeds and nature.

Following a luncheon at the Royal Palace, King Harald accompanied President Tan to the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association for the signing of a bilateral cooperation agreement between Norway and Singapore this afternoon.

Both Norway and Singapore are global maritime actors whose competitive advantages are high quality and advanced technology. Expansion of maritime cooperation between the two countries is one of the most important themes of the State Visit.

In the evening the King and Queen hosted a gala banquet at the Royal Palace in honour of the President and First Lady. Both King Harald and President Tan will speak, and Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Princess Astrid, Mrs Ferner were in attendance.

The program on Tuesday included a visit to the Research Council of Norway and Norges Bank, the central bank of Norway.

Myanmar to push capital city as destination for event organisers

Parliament buildings in Nay Pyi Taw.

The government of Myanmar has announced new initiatives to attract tourists and conference and exhibition organisers to the capital city, Nay Pyi Taw, The Bangkok Post reported.

U Tint Thwin, director general at the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, told a press conference recently that Nay Pyi Taw had a lot to offer both foreign and local tourists.

A marketing team is to boost efforts to promote the capital as a location for MICE – meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions, he said.

The government was also running tours of parliament for local youth groups, he said. The capital has historical significance that it should leverage to draw locals.

‘Our ancient kings also regarded this place as a place of nobility, so local travellers also can come to Nay Pyi Taw to learn all about this,’ he said.

Nay Pyi Taw saw an increase in hotel construction in the lead up to 2014 Asean events  while held the chair that year for the regional block. But many of the facilities have been underutilised since, the Myanmar Times, has reported.

The government last year began pushing Nay Pyi Taw as a potential destination for conferences and events. But Yangon is still the overwhelming preference as an entry point for tourist arrivals. In 2015, 1.2 million travellers arrived via Yangon, compared to just 13,800 in the capital, according to figures from the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.

There are more than 50 hotels with over 5000 rooms in Myanmar’s capital city, with the industry working together to promote the area.

But not everyone agrees with the capital’s tourism potential. ‘Nay Pyi Taw is like a dead city,’ said U Aye Kyaw, managing director of Ruby Land Tourism Services.

It takes more than a few conference halls to lure foreign visitors to a MICE destination, he said. ‘There need to be facilities with shopping spots and restaurants too,’ he said. ‘And we can’t compete with Thailand and Vietnam on hotel room prices.’

Daw Zar Chi Thet, operations manager at Ayarwaddy Legend Travels and Tours, welcomed the government’s initiatives, but said there was still much to do in the capital before foreign visitors saw it as an international conference destination.

‘Lower room prices are one of just many factors needed to help promote a MICE industry,’ she said. ‘There should be more cheap direct flights to Nay Pyi Taw, for example.’

Additional entertainment facilities were also important to the industry, Daw Zar Chi Thet added.

‘Tourists have told us that there is no place to go when the events are finished,’ she said. ‘It is not enough to have only lower hotel room prices, but we need better transportation and other facilities to promote a tourism industry in Nay Pyi Taw.’
