Sadiq Khan

London’s new mayor, Sadiq Khan, has blogged about his favourite places to eat, drink and relax in his South London neighbourhood as he backs a new drive to encourage more tourists to come and live like a local and explore some of the city’s undiscovered areas.

The Pakistani-origin mayor who lives in Tooting – made famous in popular culture by the 1970’s classic BBC comedy “Citizen Smith” – has written about how the area is home to the best South Asian restaurants in the capital, has a vibrant nightlife comparable to Soho.

The 45-year-old Khan who became London’s first Muslim mayor in May is one of a dozen local bloggers who have created insider guides about the best things to do where they live.

In his online guide, the mayor says Tooting, just 20 minutes down the Northern line from London Bridge, has cuisine from all corners of the globe, an arts club that has put on internationally acclaimed productions and a market that is “so colourful it feels like a summer holiday all year round”.

The mayor enjoys cycling down to Tooting Common with his daughters to enjoy the wildlife and homemade ice cream in the cafe, and taking a dip in England’s largest freshwater pool – the Grade II listed Art Deco Tooting Bec Lido.

And as he likes to be reminded of his South Asian roots, in his spare time he can be found at his favourite restaurant the Lahore Karahi – where “the naan is fresh and the tarkah dahl is almost as delicious as my mother’s!” Mayor Khan wrote on his blog.

He wrote, “London’s cultural and gastronomic gems are not just limited to the city centre, and that’s one of the things I love most about this city. Almost every nook and cranny is a hive of activity, offering something for absolutely everyone.

“From Camden to Tooting and Ealing to Greenwich, every local area has its own personality and appeal. I urge tourists to not only enjoy our world-renowned central London sites, but to wander off the beaten track and see more of London,” he said.

London is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and receives record numbers of visitors.

Recent figures show that 31.5 million tourists visited the British capital in 2015, contributing 15 billion pounds to the economy and supporting 700,000 jobs.

Turistsjefen mener Ibiza ikke kan ta imot flere turister nå, siden kapasiteten er sprengt.

– Vi har nesten 100 000 lovlige turistsenger og 130 000 innbyggere. Øya er bare 571 kvadratkilometer stor. Vi kan ikke håndtere flere turister som bruker våre ressurser, vann og miljø, sier Vicente Torres til radiokanalen.

Italian national carrier Alitalia began non-stop flights on 18 July from Rome Fiumicino to Beijing after a three-year absence on the route between the two capital cities, anna.aero reported. 

The 8,143-kilometre sector will be served four times weekly by the SkyTeam carrier’s A330-200 fleet.

Speaking at the inaugural flight ceremony, the airline’s CEO, Cramer Ball, said: “We have introduced a trio of new intercontinental routes from Rome in 2016 and the new service to Beijing joins the recently launched destinations of Santiago in Chile, and Mexico City, an 8% increase in the number of our long-haul flights we offer. Alitalia is committed totally to the Chinese market and wants to grow its presence in China. The new service to the Chinese capital city is an important investment for Alitalia as part of our strategic growth to serve long-haul destinations for the benefit of business and leisure travellers.” 

Star Alliance member Air China will compete on the airport pair, with its existing daily operation. In total Alitalia now serves 14 long-haul destinations non-stop from Fiumicino. Of these, 11 are in the Americas, while just three are in Asia; Seoul Incheon, Tokyo Narita and now Beijing.

Det er Estlands statlige flyselskap Nordica som åpner rute fra Groningen til Danmarks hovedstad med en frekvens på 11 avganger i uken.

– Med oppstart den 19. september vil Nordica operere to daglige flygninger mellom Groningen og København, hvor de reisende har lett adgang videre med SAS eller et av de andre selskapene i Star Alliance. Ruten forbinder det nordlige Nederland med flyplasser over hele verden. Dette er bra både for næringslivet og turismen, sier CEO for Groningen Airport, Marco van de Kreeke.

An updated Seoul guidebook will be published by the end of the year to reflect new tourist attractions and public transportation in the South Korean capital, a city official said Monday, yonhapnews.co.kr. reported.

“We’ve placed an order to make 100,000 copies of the new ‘Seoul Best 100’ by spending 160 million won (US$140,000),” the source said.

The new 120-page guidebook will be printed in five languages — Korean, English, simplified and traditional Chinese, and Japanese — the official said.

“We’d like to help tourists visiting Seoul, especially those coming for the first time, get a comprehensive grasp of attractions in the 25 wards in our city with just a quick skim through of this book,” the official said. “It’s kind of a basic book to learn about Seoul.”

There have been voices that the latest guidebook, published six years ago, does not reflect new attractions, including Dongdaemun Design Plaza, and new public transportation like Subway Line 9.

In making the new book, the city will launch a panel comprised of tour and promotion experts and foreigners residing in Seoul to find the city’s top 100 attractions by October, the official said. Public opinions will also be reflected in the book via online surveys, he added.

The guidebook will contain information on contact numbers, addresses, transportation, operation times, fares and visitor opinions, as well as basic information about the attractions, the official said.

In particular, the city has decided to not copyright the book, enabling everyone to make use of its content.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will open an embassy in Budapest, capital city of Hungary, next year, an important step in further strengthening bilateral relations, UAE’s foreign minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said in Budapest, after talks with his Hungarian counterpart, Péter Szijjártó, hungarytoday.hu reported.

The governments of the UAE and Hungary hope to conclude several agreements this year, two foreign ministers said on a joint press conference.

As a leading country in the Arab Gulf, the United Arab Emirates plays a key role in ensuring stability in the region, Mr Szijjártó said. He said that cooperation with that country is of vital importance now that NATO faces challenges from that direction.

Speaking about bilateral economic ties, the Hungarian Foreign Minister identified cooperation prospects primarily in water management and energy including training nuclear experts for the UAE.

Péter Szijjártó said that the UAE’s airline, Emirates, plans to operate its second largest customer service centre in Budapest soon.

Despite its recent garbage crisis, the volatile security situation, a two-year-long presidential vacuum and an ongoing Syrian refugee crisis, Beirut came out at number 12 in a readers-chosen survey conducted by Travel and Leisure, becoming the only Arab or Middle Eastern city to make the list this year.

Beirut came in above the Cambodian city of Siem Reap, but just below the historic Italian capital city of Rome.

Other cities making the list included Italy’s Florence, Japan’s Kyoto, Spain’s Barcelona and South Carolina’s city of Charleston at number one.

“In a region that is being devastated by war and destruction, Beirut rises out of the desert dust, with its contemporary art museums and Ottoman architecture, to serve as a guiding light,” the magazine said, describing Beirut as one of the “less obvious, but incredibly rewarding destinations” to visit.

Travel and Leisure asked its readers to weigh in on travel experiences across the globe and rank cities based on landmarks, culture, cuisine, friendliness and shopping.

Marred by recent travel warnings issued by the U.S., Canada, and Gulf Arab states, Lebanon has recently attempted to attract tourists by holding dozens of festivals across the country during the summer season.

Defying all odds, Lebanon’s Tourism Minister Michel Pharaon said earlier this month that Lebanon’s tourist sector is still attracting people to visit the country.

This is not the first time Beirut has been acknowledged as a top tourist destination. Last year, the Lebanese capital made it to the CNtraveler Readers’ Choice Awards Top 50 and it ranked 20th in the world’s best cities according to Condé Nast Traveler’s 2013 Readers’ Choice Awards.

The Czech Republic’s Ambassador to London, Libor Secka, arrived in Gibraltar on Wednesday ahead of the official opening of an Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in Gibraltar, the Gibraltar Chronicle reported.

It follows the appointment earlier this year of Stanislav Čech as Honorary Consul.

The ambassador attended a reception at the Rock Hotel last night marking the formal opening of the consulate, which will be housed in the Cloister Building.

This is the first time the Czech Republic has opened an honorary consulate in Gibraltar, and the first time for there to be any kind of Czech representation in Gibraltar since 1848, under the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

Beyond providing assistance to Czech nationals – of whom over 12,000 visit Gibraltar each year – Mr Čech hopes to build stronger links between the Czech Republic and Gibraltar in three fields in particular: tourism; economic and commercial cooperation; and education.

En britisk regjeringstalsmann sier at den ni år gamle hannkatten er en embetsmannskatt som tilhører staben i statsministerboligen, og ikke Cameron-familien.

I april i år satt Larry på trappen og ønsket USAs president Barack Obama velkommen. 

Sjefsmusefangeren Larry ble hentet til statsministerboligen i 2011 fra Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, etter at en stor, svart rotte var blitt observert i full fart foran døra til nummer 10 under en direktesending på TV.
