Ambassador Felicidade de Sousa Guterres with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, otherwise known as East Timor, has opened an embassy in Phnom Penh, capital city of Cambodia, the Khmer Times reported.
East Timors first resident ambassador to Cambodia is Mrs Felicidade de Sousa Guterres, a veteran of East Timor’s fight for independence. The new embassy is located in the Phnom Penh Tower.
East Timor won its independence on May 20, 2002. Now, after four centuries of rule by Portugal and 24 years of rule by Indonesia, the nation of 1.2 million people is pushing to join Asean, the body that unites the countries of Southeast Asia.
East Timor has now set up embassies in all 10 Asean member countries as part of its push to join the regional grouping. The move to join Asean took a positive turn last week when Prime Minister Hun Sen spoke in favor of East Timor becoming a member during a speech in Kuala Lumpur at the World Economic Forum on Asean.

Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan inaugurated the new Turkish Embassy Compound in Mogadishu, capital city of Somalia, the last leg of his East Africa tour, which also took him to Kenya and Uganda, cihan.com.tr reported.
Delivering a speech at the opening ceremony, president Erdogan said the embassy compound, built on an 80-decare land and overlooking the Indian Ocean and standing next to the Abdulaziz Mosque built by the Ottoman Empire 10 centuries ago, is the largest Turkish embassy in the world.
“13 years ago, Turkey had embassies in 12 countries in Africa. Today, we have 39 embassies,” the president said, adding that Turkey aims to open embassies in all 54 African countries.
Mr Erdogan stated that one of the meeting halls in the embassy compound was named after Police Officer Sinan Yılmaz, who was martyred in an attack in Somalia in July 2013. Noting that the Kızılay Medical Vocational High School project in Somalia is almost finished,
President Erdogan said 600 students will begin to study at the school in September.
“We are also building a military training center here on an 400-decare land and it is our biggest wish that we be here in Mogadishu during its opening ceremony,” the president said.
Turkey has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to war-ravaged Somalia since 2011, according to Turkish officials. Last week, the Turkish Cabinet approved $24 million in budgetary support to Somalia for this year, according to Voice of America.
Following the speeches, president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud inaugurated the embassy compound.
Also attending the opening ceremony were First Lady Emine Erdoğan, along with the deputy prime minister, foreign minister and economy minister of Turkey.

Heavy rains have caused severe flooding in parts of France as well as Belgium and Germany, with reports of at least nine people dead, France24.com reported.
President François Hollande of France on Thursday declared the region around Paris a natural disaster area, and some 21,700 homes were without power in the Paris and Loiret regions. Several towns in central France are experiencing the worst flooding in more than a century, with over 5,000 people evacuated since the weekend.
The Louvre museum in Paris said it would be closed on Friday so that staff could evacuate works of art threatened by the rising waters of the River Seine.

Authorities in Iceland have moved to curb the number of residents offering properties up for holiday rent on Airbnb in a bid to counterbalance the country’s overwhelming visitor numbers, The Telegraph online newspaper in London reported.
The legislation, which could come into effect this week, would impose a business tax on people letting out their homes for more than 90 days a year, according to the newspaper.
“Policymakers are in the final stages of discussing new rules on home sharing across the country. The proposed rules support home sharing on Airbnb generally but include provisions that could require some occasional home sharers to register as businesses,” Airbnb said in a statement.
The move follows a ruling in April that required those living in an apartment block to secure approval from other residents in the building before offering a property on the holiday lets website.
Iceland has seen a huge surge in tourism in the last five years. In 2015 Iceland welcomed 1.2 million tourists and is expecting 1.6 million in 2016, with growing interest from travellers – from Northern Lights seekers to fans of the new Star Wars film or the Game of Thrones TV-series, both filmed in Iceland.
But the authorities fear Iceland will be unable to accommodate more and more tourists, projected to be nearly 30,000 a day this year, and want to protect both the unspoilt landscapes as well as the housing market.
“This strong growth is expected to continue in 2016. But with it come a number of challenges: to preserve the natural surroundings that are such an important part of Iceland’s appeal and to build up the infrastructure needed to maintain Iceland’s worldwide competitiveness as a travel destination,” said Kristín Hrönn Guðmundsdóttir, the executive director at Íslandsbanki Research.
While the number of available hotel rooms in the country grew more than ever last year, with 290 new rooms created, it is still not enough to meet the estimated requirement of 1,400, according to the latest report on tourism by the Icelandic bank.
Airbnb has seen a 124 per cent increase in usage in the last 12 months, with nearly 4,000 listings created in January this year, compared to 1,700 last year, according to figures from the local travel website Túristi.
In the capital Reykjavik, where most tourists stay, there was a 126 per cent increase in total Airbnb listings in November last year, with more than 100 apartments available on its main street alone, compared to December 2014, while the country as a whole saw a 156 per cent increase in Airbnb stays last year compared to 2014, welcoming 211,000 guests, the company reported.
Residents are said to have suffered from the rising demand for holiday rental accommodation which has been coupled with a dramatic increase in housing prices in central parts of the capital, and a shortage in long-term rental options.
“We don’t want downtown Reykjavík to be tourists only, with no locals,” Áshildur Bragadóttir, the director of Visit Reykjavík, told The Guardian.
