Idag 17.mars feirer Irland sin nasjonaldag, St.Patrick’s Day. Dagen feires ikke bare i Irland – da det er en av verdens mest populære feiringer, og i svært mange land og storbyer, spesielt der det bor mange irer og irskættede, feires det med parader, irsk folkemusikk, Guinness-øl, og selvsagt med fargen grønn – den irske nasjonalfargen, som en viktig komponent. Det fåes blant annet grønt (!) øl, selvsagt…

Verdens største St.Patrick’s Day-parade holdes i New York, en by der over 5 prosent av befolkningen har irske aner.

Dødsdagen til Irlands skytshelgen, St.Patrick (385-461 e.Kr.) feires ikke bare som nasjonaldag i Irland, men også som offentlig fridag i Nord-Irland, i den kanadiske provinsen Newfoundland and Labrador, og på den britisk-styrte øya Montserrat i Karibia, der svært mange av innbyggerne er etterkommere av irske innvandrere.

Store St.Patrick-markeringer finner også sted i Chicago, Sydney, London, Brussel, Boston, Auckland, Tokyo, Cape Town, Toronto, Munchen og Buenos Aires.

Den første offisielle St.Patrick’s Day-paraden i Irland fant sted i Waterford i 1903.

Fort Lauderdale-based Silver Airways has announced it will begin nonstop flights from Jacksonville International Airport, Florida, to Nassau, capital of The Bahamas, reports The Florida Times-Union – Jacksonville.com website.

The service will begin May 28 with one way fares, including taxes and fees, priced at $99.

– We are thrilled to be the first airline to introduce the much-requested service between Jacksonville and Nassau. Silver has long been committed to the Jacksonville area and we appreciate the great support we receive from its community and airport, said Silver Airways President and CEO Sami Teittinen in a news release.

The airline averages over 100 daily flights to 26 destinations in Florida (including hubs in Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Tampa) and the Bahamas, and the Mid-Atlantic region from Washington-Dulles.

Silver Airways has a 22 plane fleet made up of 34-seat Saab 340B Plus turbo-prop aircraft.

Det er langt færre turister på La Palma enn ellers på Kanariøyene, mindre forhold og mer fred og ro med både gode tur- og bademuligheter.

La Palma, også kjent som San Miguel de Palma, er den nordvestligste av Kanariøyene. Øya er 706 km2 stor og har rundt 86,000 innbyggere, 20,000 av dem bor i hovedstaden Santa Cruz de la Palma, som ligger på østkysten.

Administrativt og politisk hører La Palma til provinsen Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Øyas høyeste punkt er Roque de los Muchachos, som ligger 2423 meter over havet. Fra fjellet kan man se over til Tenerife, El Hierro og La Gomera.

Kristin Solberg, tidligere utenrikskorrespondent for Aftenposten, kommer fra stillingen som NRKs korrespondent i Istanbul i Tyrkia, mens Philip Lote er journalist i NRKs utenriksavdeling. Han har tidligere være NRK-korrespondent i Beijing i Kina.

Det kan ifølge NRK bli aktuelt å flytte Kairo-kontoret til en annen by Midtøsten.

Cruise Dublin’s role is to promote Dublin as Ireland’s cruise capital to cruise lines internationally, working collectively with its members who are drawn from the capital’s leading retail outlets, visitor experiences and tourism bodies, including Fáilte Ireland, the Irish national tourism authority. 

As a membership organisation, Cruise Dublin’s remit is to support those businesses in the capital looking to develop their offering in tandem with the future growth of Dublin as a marquee cruise destination.

Its formation comes as figures reveal that cruise tourism is currently growing at a rate of 20 per cent per annum in Dublin, and projected to grow substantially in the coming years.

Allure of the Seas

Dublin Port Company’s ABR Project, recently approved by An Bord Pleanála, will facilitate future growth and allow Dublin Port to handle the world’s largest cruise liners, including the 360 meter long Allure of the Seas, owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises, the Miami-based Norwegian-American shipping company. 

The ABR Project, once complete, will mean that larger ships will be able to routinely call at Dublin, turn within the expanded Alexandra Basin West and berth as far upriver as East Link Bridge, adding a new dimension to the cityscape.

Mexico received a record 32 million tourists in 2015, enough to make the Aztec nation the 10th most popular tourist destination in the world, according to the Mexican government, reports yahoo.com news.

The top destinations for international visitors in 2015 were the federal capital Mexico City, Cancun and Acapulco.

Tourism accounts for 8.5 per cent of Mexico’s gross domestic product and the sector is growing faster than the economy as a whole, Tourism Minister Enrique de la Madrid told a press conference.

The number of international visitors has increased 37 per cent increase since the start of President Enrique Pena Nieto’s administration in December 2012.

The expansion in tourism has created 800,000 direct jobs and another 1.2 million indirect jobs over the last 10 years.

International arrivals were boosted by special events such as the October 30-November 1 Mexico Grand Prix, which brought 366,174 spectators to Mexico City.

Austria has opened a consulate in Curaçao, reports the curacaochronicle.com website. 

The Austrian consulate in the Caribbean island, a semi-independent country within the Kingdom of The Netherlands, opened its doors in the Jan Thiel-area in Willemstad, the capital, last Monday.

The opening ceremony was performed by Curacao’s Prime Minister Ben Whiteman, Werner Druml, the Austrian ambassador in The Hague, and the honorary consul, Harald Buchmayer.

With the opening of a consulate Austria and Curacao hope to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
