PRETORIA: DISEASE, HOOKERS THONG SOUTH AFRICA’S CAPITAL CITY

In Pretoria, a total of 1152 prostitutes compete for business at 30 different sites.

This is according to a study on the state of homelessness in South Africa’s administrative capital Prestoria conducted by the University of Pretoria and Unisa, timeslive.co.za reported.

The report, “Path Out of Homelessness”, warns of a multiplicity of social situations in the inner city where diseases proliferate.

The report says that, on average, 10 prostitutes ply their trade at a single site, but this can in places rise to as many as 200.

The report states that 1005 of the sex workers are women and 65 are transgender females and their ages range between 18 and 54.

Male sex workers make up 82 of the total.

Of 416 sex workers screened for HIV and TB since October last year, 187 were HIV-positive and of these 177 also had significant TB symptoms.

Quoting Statistics SA 2011 figures, the report says that of a total of 6244 homeless people in the Tshwane municipality, 54% are male, 46% female, 55% black, 39% white, 3.1% coloured and 2.1% Indian.

People aged between 20 and 29 make up 33.4% of the homeless population; 21.4% are over 65 .

According to the report, 32.1% of homeless people in Pretoria come from within Gauteng, while 52.1% are from other provinces and 15.8% are foreigners.

The researchers found that the city’s location and its status as a capital and an economic hub made it attractive to migrants from other provinces and from across the country’s borders.

REISENDE HISSER SEG OPP OVER EKSPERIMENT PÅ T-BANESTASJON I LONDON

I forsøksprosjekt nektes folk å gå i rulletrappen. Alle må stå stille, skriver aftenposten.no

BRUSSELS USES CATS TO LURE BACK TOURISTS AFTER LOCKDOWN

#BrusselsLockdown video by VISITFLANDERS. (YouTube video screenshot)

Belgium’s tourist boards have latched onto a social media craze of cats that gave Brussels light relief during a tense five-day security lockdown in the wake of militant attacks in Paris, London Free Press reported.

Images of the city’s streets deserted as security forces hunted suspected Islamist militants have dealt a blow to Belgium’s tourism industry, with hotels reporting many cancellations.

When police on Sunday asked the public in Brussels not to share details of their operations on social media, Belgians took to tweeting each other pictures of their cats.

Capitalising on the social media hit, Belgium’s three tourist authorities have now released a 20-second video showing cats at Brussels’s landmarks such as the historic Grand Place or the Atomium, which they said was filmed at the height of the lockdown.

The video depicts cats dancing all over the city, some wearing black bowler hats or with green apples in front of their faces in a nod to paintings of the Belgian surrealist painter Rene Magritte.

In the background, a saxophone is heard, an invention of the Belgian Adolphe Sax. The original trend drew a warm response on social media, and the tourist authorities said they wanted to show how proud they were of Brussels and its residents for their good-humoured response to the crisis.

Belgium’s capital has been on maximum alert since Saturday over the threat of a possible Paris-style attack. A coordinated assault in which 130 people were killed in Paris on Nov. 13 was claimed by Islamic State.

Brussels, home to the European Commission, reopened its metro system and schools on Wednesday, albeit with armed police and soldiers still patrolling.

“Tourism Flanders, Visit Brussels and Wallonia-Brussels Tourism are proud of the people of Brussels and wanted to give them an extra boost,” they said. “Their winking cats evoked great sympathy at home and abroad.”

ROME BANS CENTURIONS FROM THE COLOSSEUM AND OTHER TOURIST SITES

Rome has banished the Centurions from its ancient sites, bbc.com reported.

Impersonators of soldiers from ancient Rome have been a common sight at the Colosseum, Forum and other major sites, posing for photos in return for cash.

But from Thursday, the Centurions are outlaws – along with bicycle-drawn rickshaw drivers and ticket touts.

City commissioner Francesco Paolo Tronca issued the decree ahead of the Catholic Jubilee year, an important tourist event starting on 8 December.

He is in charge of the city pending the election of a new mayor and cited security issues as well as protecting tourists from scams as the reasons for the decree.

It spoke of the “inappropriate, insistent and sometimes aggressive” behaviour of Centurions, who charge between 5 euros and 10 euros ($5.3-$10.6) for a photo. They can also get tips from tour organisers for persuading tourists to go on guided trips.

Many of the impersonators commute in from poorer districts of the capital. There have been incidents of “gladiators” attacking each other to defend their pitches at lucrative sites.

Offering a ride in a rickshaw is also banned in some areas, as are touts offering bus and museum tickets.

This year Pope Francis declared an Extraordinary Jubilee Year for the Catholic Church, beginning on 8 December, the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second Vatican Council.

It will end on 20 November 2016, the Feast of Christ the King.

Parks and piazzas are being spruced up for the event, which is expected to boost the numbers of visitors to Rome significantly.

Millions of pilgrims attended the last event in 2000.

BEIJING FÅR VERDENS STØRSTE FLYPLASS

Slik blir verdens største flyplass seende ut

Kina bygger verdens største flyplass, i hovedstaden Beijing.

I tillegg skal fire millioner tonn gods transporteres over flyplassen.

BEIJING CALLS 66,000 PEOPLE TO HELP SHOWEL SNOW

From November 22 to 23 China’s capital Beijing saw a thick blanket of snow cloak the metropolis, resulting in flight cancellations and highway closures, theweathernetwork.com reported.

Conditions were so bad that the Beijing Municipal Committee had 66,000 people help shovel snow through the overnight hours.

Although November snow can be expected in Beijing (the city’s airport saw snow around the same time in 2012 and 2009), the substantially cold draft of air is reportedly unusual at this time of year.

Photo: cctv-america.com

The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) released a statement Wednesday indicating a continued blue category warning for the cold air wave moving through much of the country.

“From November 26 to 27, in the wake of the strong cold front, below freezing temperatures will be felt all the way to the lower reaches of Yangtze River and its northern areas,” the CMA notes.

“The coldest temperatures in central and western Inner Mongolia and northern North China will reach 10 to 20 degrees below zero.”

Courtyard World Trade Center press release:

From Traditional Feasts to Dance-Worthy Beats, the Courtyard World Trade Center, Abu Dhabi, federal capital of the United Arab Emirates, celebrates the Season in Style.

If ever there were a time to indulge, it would be during the holidays. And if ever there were a place to do it, it would be at the Courtyard World Trade Center, Abu Dhabi.

This contemporary hotel has planned an exciting range of events — from Grand Buffets to Recovery Brunches — and it is inviting everyone to enjoy the party.

Christmas Eve – December 24

With three of the finest hotel restaurants in Abu Dhabi, the Courtyard is the place to dine this Christmas Eve. Choose from a buffet at The Bistro or a Three-course meal at Fifth Street Cafe, and you’ll enjoy a repast fit for St. Nick.

The Bistro’s buffet features options like succulent turkey and all the trimmings, as well as a well-stocked seafood bar. Fifth Street Cafe, meanwhile, will serve a choice of appetizers, oven-roasted turkey roulade or filet mignon and traditional Christmas pudding.

Christmas Day – December 25

Guests can look forward to equally spectacular feasts on Christmas Day, too. The Bistro will serve a brunch featuring golden turkeys with cranberry sauce, U.S. prime rib, Yorkshire pudding and roasted potatoes, as well as international dishes like wok-fried duck and chicken moulikya. After dining, guests can toast the holiday with a festive tipple at Up and Below, the rooftop bar and star attraction among Abu Dhabi hotels near the World Trade Center.

Fifth Street Cafe will also mark the holiday with a three-course meal, which begins with caramelized scallops, continues with oven-roasted turkey roulade and Brussels sprouts and ends with Christmas pudding drizzled With vanilla sauce.

New Year’s Eve – December 31

Bid 2015 a fond and fabulous farewell at one of these two restaurants in Abu Dhabi. The Bistro will host a Grand Buffet with an abundance of dishes ranging from seafood (think Fine de Claire oysters) to Harissa marinated chicken, roasted rib eye, leg of lamb and more. And, of course, end the year on a sweet note with a taste of the chocolate pudding, lemon meringue pie, tiramisu or chocolate fountain.

Fifth Street Cafe will serve a three-course meal paired with a glass of wine on New Year’s Eve with options like blue crab cake with a citrus confit, followed by braised short ribs or pan-seared salmon. A tasting platter of desserts provides the perfect final course.

And since no New Year is complete without a good party, Up and Below will serve cocktails and the city’s hottest beats alongside the best views in Abu Dhabi.

New Year’s Day January 1

Start the New Year right with a Recovery Brunch at The Bistro. Sushi, fresh seafood and international cuisine like Malabar lamb curry will all be on offer, as well a selection of desserts. (Hello, chocolate-and-chestnut tart.) Afterward, enjoy an “After Brunch” drink on the house at Up and Below.

Traditionalists who want to put a twist on things by staying in but serving a professionally prepared meal can have the best of both worlds with the hotel’s Turkey Takeaways. Available November 24 to January 7, this offer includes a 6-kilogram turkey (serves five to six people) or 8-kilogram turkey (serves eight to nine people) with all the trimmings like sage-and-chestnut stuffing, herb-roasted potatoes, honey-roasted root vegetables, Brussels sprouts, sweet potato gratin and cranberry sauce.

Those who’d like to get a head start on the holiday fun, meanwhile, can book the Festive Holiday Package. Available between December 1 and 31, 2015, the offer includes 20% discounts on dining at the hotel, two gift certificates of AED 100 each to House of Fraser and The World Trade Center Mall and two tickets to Novo Cinemas.
