Inspite of the ongoing conflict in South Sudan, Turkish Airlines has restated their intent to add Juba to their growing list of African destinations, though no firm startup date has been given as of now, the www.eturbonews.com website reported.

South Sudan presently has few international airline connections, apart from Kenya Airways, RwandAir, Flydubai, Egypt Air and Ethiopian, and to have a truly global carrier commence flights will no doubt provide a boost to economic and tourism development when peace returns to Africa?s youngest nation.

Turkish is of course no stranger to opening up routes into conflict-ridden countries – it was the first to launch flights to Mogadishu at the time, again apart from some smaller regional carriers. Turkish Airlines presently serves some 40 destinations in Africa, with the most recent addition being Abuja – their third destination in Nigeria after Lagos and Kano, but it already has shown intent to increase this number to 50.

This places Turkish Airlines, as far as African connections are concerned, way ahead of Emirates and Qatar Airways, the latter just having announced the launch of flights to Zanzibar as their 20th destination on the continent.

Sources in Juba have broadly welcomed the development when made aware of the upcoming new air links with Istanbul.

De diplomatiske samtalene mellom USA og Cuba pågår for fullt, med målsetting om en snarlig gjenoppretting av diplomatiske forbindelser. USA håper at forbindelsene er gjenopprettet i løpet av få dager, og at landet kan åpne ambassade i Havanna allerede før 10.april, før det pan-amerikanske toppmøtet i Panama, skriver foxnews.com

Videre skal Cuba gjenåpne sin ambassade i Washington DC.

Både USAs president Barack Obama og Cubas president Raul Castro er ventet å delta på møtet i Panama.

Cuba og USA har ikke hatt diplomatiske forbindelser på 54 år.

– England har blitt et viktig marked for oss. Derfor er vi glade for å kunne tilby flere langdistanseruter mellom London Gatwick og USA. Norwegian flyr allerede mellom Orlando og Oslo og ruten er svært populær, både blant europeere og amerikanere, sier Thomas Ramdahl, kommersiell direktør i Norwegian i en pressemelding.

– Tidligere denne uken hadde vi også vår første flygning mellom København og Orlando. Vi mener de reisende fortjener billige og fleksible billetter over Atlanten, sier Ramdahl.

Ruten mellom London Gatwick (LGW) og Orlando (MCO) vil operere en gang i uken, på lørdager.

Lanseringen av langdistanseruter mellom London Gatwick og USA er et ledd i Norwegians strategi om å vokse globalt og få et sterkere fotfeste internasjonalt. I fjor lanserte Norwegian direkteflygninger mellom London Gatwick og New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX) og Fort Lauderdale i Florida.

Norwegian har flere hundre piloter og kabinansatte på basen i London Gatwick. Norwegian har også etablerert en langdistansebase i London Gatwick, hvor både piloter og kabinpersonale ansettes.

Norwegian har syv 787 Dreamlinere i flåten. Selskapet har ytterligere 10 Dreamlinere i bestilling med levering frem til 2018.

The Vatican embassy in Washington, DC (the Apostolic Nunciature) has asked local zoning officials to approve construction of a 6-foot high security fence around the embassy grounds, in anticipation of the visit of Pope Francis, the catholicculture.org website reported.

Embassy officials said that the Secret Service had recommended the fence as one in a series of security measures to be taken before the arrival of Pope Francis in September.

Tentative plans for the fence showed an iron fence with several stone columns on the property at 3339 Massachusetts Avenue in Washington.

The zoning board was assured that the fence would be “attractive and compatible with the building on the property.”

The new Royal Norwegian Embassy office was officially inaugurated on 9 March 2015 in its new location at the 12th Floor of the DelRosarioLaw Centre, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in The Phillippines, reported on it’s website – www.norway.ph

Ambassador Erik Førner, Deputy Director General Nils Martin Gunneng of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and co-owner of the DelRosarioLaw Centre Atty.

Ruben del Rosario took part in the cutting of ribbon to mark the official opening of the new office.        

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Førner took note that the new office promotes a more open environment, which creates an effective communication among staff. The office also offers the finest facilities, modern and new technology, spacious meeting rooms and better internet connection for a more efficient office operations and delivery of services.

“We are very proud of our new office. I think the most important thing we have achieved in the layout is the openness where the barriers between diplomats and staff are reduced significantly”, said Ambassador Erik Førner.

Mr. Gunneng said that the transfer of the Embassy to the Bonifacio Global City marks a new chapter in the longstanding and good bilateral relationship between the Philippines and Norway. He also noted that the investments in a new Embassy is another strong signal of Norway?s long term commitment to the Philippines, as well as to the ASEAN community.

The first full-fledged Embassy was established in 1967 in Damarinas Village. Since then, bilateral relations between the Philippines and Norway have continued to develop and strengthen with the maritime sector in full force and other areas of cooperation have grown.

?Norway has a long term perspective in the Philippines. As other countries may come and go, we stay,? said Ambassador Førner.

The ceremony incorporated the traditional ways of inauguration in the Philippines such as the blessing of facilities by a priest and the throwing of coins to signify continued success. Numerous guests were present to witness the inauguration such as Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano, members of the diplomatic corps, Philippine and Norway business sector stakeholders and representatives from the government.

Taipei, capital of Taiwan (Republic of China) has been appointed as world design capital 2016, only the fifth to receive the honor to date, designboom.com reported. 

Taiwanese design culture has been developing over the last 40 years, with artisans from all over the world drawn to the country for its mastery of traditional craftsmanship, such as in bamboo and wood weaving, and its incorporation with contemporary materials and manufacturing processes.

Bolivianske medier meldte denne uken at McDonald’s snart er på plass igjen i landet, etter et opphold på 13 år. Verdens største hurtigmatkjede la ned sine utsalg i hovedstaden La Paz og fire andre byer i 2002, på grunn av manglende interesse fra publikum og stadig synkende omsetning, skriver http://blogs.blouinnews.com

En lokal investor i bilbransjen tar nå sjansen på å prøve med ny McDonald’s-drift i Bolivia, og starter først opp i byen Santa Cruz nå i april, før han utvider til andre større byer i landet.

Forrige gang McDonald’s prøvde seg i Bolivia holdt de driften gående i åtte år før de måtte gi seg. 

Bolivia og Cuba er i dag de to større landene i Latin-Amerika og i Karibia hvor McDonald’s ikke er til stede. I tillegg har kjeden av ulike årsaker lagt ned driften på Bermuda, Jamaica og Barbados. 

Nå er det imidlertid klart at i kjølvannet av den politiske og diplomatiske oppmykningen mellom de to gamle erkefiendene USA og Cuba så kommer både McDonalds og Coca-Cola til å etablere seg på Cuba.

I januar i år uttalte en av eks-president Fidel Castros sønner, Alex Castro-Soto at “både Coca-Cola og McDonald’s er velkomne på Cuba”.

McDonald’s is returning to Bolivia, after an absence of 13 years. McDonald’s left La Paz and four other Bolivian cities in 2002 due to lack of local interest and slow sales. The world’s largest fast food chain is also on course to establish outlets in Cuba.

While Paris is still no Amsterdam when it comes to city cykling, the city has announced plans to join the world leaders of biking within the next five years, the www.thelocal.fr website reported.
The ambitious plan aims to double the number of cycling lanes in order to provide 1,400 kilometres of safe cycling routes by 2020, up from the current 700 kilometres. 
 
“The aim is to travel and cycle across the city in comfort and security,” Kiki Lambert, spokeswoman for the cycling association in Ile-de-France, told The Local.
 
“Paris’s cycling policy cannot be assessed in terms of the number of cycling lanes but in the number of cyclists. More cycling lanes, lower driving speed, and more bike stands all have a positive effect on that. It’s a matter of safety by numbers and I believe that has proven to be true in most cities across Europe.” 
Paris town hall wants to encourage more people to travel across the city using a bike and plans to triple the number of journeys made on a bike from five percent to 15 percent over five years. 
 
The cycling lane “express network” will be organized around the big avenues linking the north and south as well as those linking the east and west of the city.
On these main roads, cycling lanes will be separated from the traffic to ensure cyclists’ safety. 
 
The proposal also includes increasing the number of two-way cycling lanes on smaller roads where the speed limit for motorists will be limited to 30km/h and even on the Champs Elysées tourists will be able to ride a bike to do their shopping.
In the map above, the pink lanes show the proposed north-south and east-west cycling lanes. The thick green lanes indicate existing cycling lanes and the dotted lines indicate proposed lanes, most of which would be two-way. 
 
“This plan will create a new form of tourism in Paris which is booming elsewhere,” Christophe Najdovski, the Green Party deputy for transport at the Paris council who proposed the plan, said in a statement. 
 
One of the objectives of the 150 million euro plan is to develop France’s cycling culture in the city by making it easier to use a bike to get around. Cycling classes and repair workshops are part of the things Paris council wants to encourage.

As it stands, Parisians seem keen to mount their saddles. In 2014, the number of people who subscribed to the Vélib’ programme, which allows people to rent a bike from one of the Vélib’ stands in the capital and return it to any other stands in the city, has reached a new record of 283,000 people. 
 
Paris Town Hall is now looking at introducing electric bikes to facilitate people’s journeys on hills and when travelling further away. 
 
This push for encouraging cycling and the use of public transport comes a few days after the pollution cloud which settled across Europe last month, which for a few hours saw Paris ranked as the world’s most polluted city.

Bygningsmyndighetene i Washington DC har gitt tillatelse til renovering / bygging av et såkalt micro-unit hotell med 230 rom i 627 H Street i Chinatown, et lite og historisk nabolag som ligger øst for sentrum i den amerikanske hovedstaden.

Prosjektet er et samarbeid mellom Monument Reality og Modus Hotels, skriver Washington Business Journal på sine nettsider www.bizjournals.com

Hotellet skal stå ferdig i 2016, og får en prislapp på 60 millioner dollar, 480 millioner kroner.
