An Office of the Embassy of the Netherlands was opened in Minsk on 10 July. The ceremony was attended by Vladimir Makei, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Johanna Brandt, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, the Belarus news agency BelTA reported.

According to Ms Brandt, the opening of the diplomatic mission is a landmark event for the Netherlands and Belarus, particularly considering the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. She commented on the status of the relations between Belarus and the Netherlands in the context of the developments of the past several years in Belarus and the fact that the country borders on the European Union.

One of the successful examples of cooperation is the Children of Chernobyl program. Many Belarusian children aged 7 to 11 have visited the Netherlands as part of the program. Over years this small initiative has evolved into a well-established program which involves dozens of Dutch municipalities.

“We are confident that our presence here will contribute to closer cooperation, peace, stability and prosperity of your people and the region,” Ms Brandt said. She also noted that the Netherlands appreciates the joint projects in the field of culture and sports.

“I have high hopes for the FIFA World Cup qualifying match due late this year when our Orange Lions will meet again with the White Wings from Belarus. Our countries share this passion for football and sport. It is a wonderful way to improve the relations. I wish both teams all the best and look forward to the exciting game,” she added.

Johanna Brandt stressed that the bilateral cooperation of Belarus and the Netherlands is actively gaining momentum and expressed hope for its further development in various fields.

“The opening of the Embassy Office is the first step which will be followed by the appointment of a diplomat who will represent the Netherlands in Belarus,” she added.

The people of Eritrea have long said their capital Asmara is like no other city in Africa, and on Saturday the UN agreed, designating it a World Heritage site, the Agence France-Press news agency / themalaymailonline.com reported.

The proclamation ends a long-running quest by Eritrean authorities to have the city’s unique architecture, which includes an art-deco bowling alley with coloured glass windows and a petrol station built to resemble a soaring aeroplane (pictured), recognised by the UN cultural body, Unesco.

“The city’s recognition as a heritage site of outstanding universal value fills us with tremendous pride and joy, but also with a profound sense of responsibility and duty,” said Hanna Simon, Eritrea’s permanent delegate to Unesco.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the World Heritage Committee in Krakow, Poland.

A former Italian colony, most of the futuristic designs of the Eritrean capital date back to the rule of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini from 1936 to 1941.

Architects whose designs were unwelcome in conservative European cities found a place in Asmara at a time when about half of the city’s population was Italian and the city was known as “Piccola Roma”, or “Little Rome”.

While the modernist architecture of other Eritrean cities was destroyed during a decades-long war of liberation from Ethiopia, Asmara’s survived and was declared a national monument by the government in 2001, which refers to it as Africa’s “City of Dream”

But efforts to restore the marble facades and Roman-style pillars of the city’s theatres and cinemas have been hampered by a shortage of money and local expertise, city authorities say.

Hotellinvestoren Lars Wenaas har kjøpt Marriott-hotellet AC Hotel Bella Sky Copenhagen, skriver travelnews.no

Det godt synlige signalbygget mellom Kastrup flyplass og sentrum er 23 etasjer høyt, og ble oppført i 2011. Hotellet har 812 rom og er det nest største i Skandinavia.

Bella Sky har direkte tilgang til kongress-området Bellasenteret, og ligger ikke langt unna nye Royal Arena, som har plass til 16 000 mennesker.

– Wenaasgruppens strategi er å eie store hotelleiendommer med god beliggenhet i de største byene i Europa, skriver selskapet i en pressemelding.

– Her passer Bella Sky-eiendommen riktig bra inn i vår eksisterende portefølje, som også inkluderer ytterligere tre hoteller i København med i alt 1100 værelser, heter det videre.

I vår kjøpte Wenaasgruppen Radisson Blu Hotel Hamburg – som med sine 27 etasjer er byens nest høyeste bygning. Også dette hotellet er tilknyttet et kongressenter – Hamburger Conference Center, skriver nettstedet.
