Belgium’s leading airline Brussels Airlines has announced a new route from Belfast city to Brussels.

Northern Ireland will be linked five times a week with the European Capital by a Brussels Airlines 97-seater jet, www.u.tv reported.

The new service will start on 27 March next year and flights will operate on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

The launch of the Belfast service also means that Belgian aviation is back in Ireland after an absence of 15 years.

“We are delighted that we can add Ireland to our continuously growing map of European destinations,” Brussels Airlines Chief Commercial Officer Lars Redeligx said.

“On a weekly basis we will offer close to 1000 seats on the route. Belfast is an important touristic, administrative and economic destination.

“Thanks to our investment in this new service we give the region also access to our Brussels Airlines and Star Alliance network. This is not only great news for the inhabitants of the Belfast area but also for the economy and the tourism industry in Ireland.”

Brian Ambrose, Chief Executive of George Best Belfast City Airport, added: “2015 has been a very successful year for Belfast City Airport with passengers numbers expected to be up 10% on last year.

“We have had our sights set on increasing connectivity with key European destinations and I am delighted that we have been able to deliver on these promises commencing both an Amsterdam and Brussels service.”

The new route has been welcomed by both business and tourism officials.

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Today’s announcement is really good news for tourism to Northern Ireland in 2016.”

“We look forward to co-operating with Brussels Airlines to maximise the promotion of this new flight to Belfast. As an island, the importance of convenient, direct, non-stop flights cannot be overstated ” they are absolutely critical to achieving growth in inbound tourism.”

Invest NI’s Chief Executive, Alastair Hamilton welcomed the announcement as it will help boost business links to Northern Ireland.

“Invest Northern Ireland is strongly committed to supporting the Northern Ireland Executive?s aim of enhancing direct air linkages between Northern Ireland and Europe as a vital contributor to economic Development,” he said.

“This new air route will be strategically important in helping to deliver this objective.”

“Our local exporters will now be positioned to take advantage of the direct connectivity it will offer to Brussels but also be able to use this service as a springboard further into Europe.”

Gerry Lennon, Chief Executive, Visit Belfast, added: “This brand new Brussels-Belfast air link will be hugely significant in our targeted efforts to promote Belfast as an attractive, modern and cosmopolitan city break destination to one of our key European markets and will be essential to assisting us in promoting our award-winning credentials as a leading, easy-to-access destination for major international conferences, meetings and events.”

“As the capital of an expanding Europe, Brussels is a major tourism market for the city and this new route will assist us greatly as we look to bring in even greater numbers of business and leisure visitors. It also strengthens our European connections further and will allow many more visitors to travel to Belfast, and to Northern Ireland, both directly and indirectly.”

ORKNEY’S ST.MAGNUS CATHEDRAL TO UNDERGO LASER SCANNING

www.hovedsteder.blogg.no is a Norway-based blog about the capitals of the world, with a focus on tourism, travel, transport, the environment, politics, diplomatic affairs, lifestyle, culture and entertainment, food and drink.

A 12th Century cathedral in Kirkwall, capital of the Orkneys in Scotland, is to undergo a laser scan as part of efforts to preserve the building, www.bbc.com reports.

The project, which will record every last detail of Orkney’s St Magnus Cathedral, is to begin later this year.

Orkney Islands Council is currently looking for experts to carry out detailed scans of the internal and external structure of the cathedral.

A 3D record of the building can then be compared with future scans to detect any changes in its fabric.

It will allow for analyses of weathering, erosion, decay, moss build-up or shifts due to subsidence.

It is also hoped the scans can be used to aid research and enhance tourism by developing digital tours of the cathedral under separate proposals for a major exhibition on the history of Kirkwall.

The Society of the Friends of St Magnus Cathedral have given the project their backing, committing to contribute half of the costs of the laser scanning.

The society’s secretary David Oddie said they were delighted to be contributing.

He said: “It goes right to the core of our chief aim – protecting and safeguarding the condition of this majestic building. The joint funding of this work is a reflection of the good relationship we’ve had with the council for many years.”

The Romano-Gothic cathedral, built from red and yellow sandstone, is of international significance.

The foundations were placed in 1137, and the building, dedicated to Magnus Erlendsson, Earl of Orkney, took about 300 years to build.

It was assigned to the inhabitants of Kirkwall by King James III of Scotland in a charter dated 1486.

A new tourist shuttle bus to Armagh is about to become a familiar sight on the streets of Northern Ireland’s capital city of Belfast this summer, the www.belfastlive.co.uk website reported.

The new innovative scheme designed to showcase the Cathedral City’s hidden gems.

The new service, which will operate on Fridays and Saturdays every week from May 22 until the end of August, will offer a tourist-friendly “hop on, hop off” service to Armagh, taking in the two world-famous St Patrick’s Cathedrals, the historic Armagh Gaol, Armagh Planetarium and the Observatory.

The new tours also provide visitors with the opportunity to steep themselves in the Orchard County’s famous apple heritage by taking in a carefully-designed trip to the Armagh Cider Company, or engage in the area’s legendary past with a visit to the mystical Navan Centre and Fort.

Tickets for the tours, which are supported by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Tourism Northern Ireland and Visit Belfast, cost £15 per person – and visitors keen for an overnight stay on Friday can use their return ticket to get back to Belfast the following day.

Lord Mayor, Darryn Causby, said:”The historic and beautiful city of Armagh, and its surrounding area, continues to attract families and visitors of all ages from across Northern Ireland and beyond, and I’m delighted that this exciting new tour makes its major attractions, experiences, culture, history, hospitality and charm much more accessible to people across Belfast and Northern Ireland”.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has strongly praised Titanic Belfast, describing the visitor attraction in the capital of Northern Ireland as “absolutely brilliant”, according to www.belfastlive.co.uk

Photo: www.belfastlive.co.uk

Speaking in the House of Commons Wednesday in response to a question from East Belfast MP Naomi Long, Mr.Cameron encouraged tourists from across the United Kingdom and throughout the world to visit the world-class attraction.

His endorsement comes less than a week after Titanic Belfast beat off competition from the Eiffel Tower and London Eye to win a top European travel award.

The Prime Minister said: “First, let me join the hon. Lady in praising the Titanic exhibition, which I have been to see myself. It is an absolutely brilliant visitor attraction and yet another reason to visit Belfast, and not only for people from across our United Kingdom, but for people from across Europe and around the world.”

Titanic Belfast, which has welcomed over two million visitors since opening in March 2012, was celebrating last week when it was named as Europe’s best visitor attraction for groups at the European Group Travel Awards (EGTA), held last Thursday night in Berlin.

Welcoming the Prime Minister’s remarks, Tim Husbands MBE, CEO of Titanic Belfast, said: ?It’s fantastic to hear the Prime Minister speak in such glowing terms about Titanic Belfast and a real coup for us to have such a strong endorsement.

“Mr Cameron was speaking from personal experience after thoroughly enjoying his visit with us and, as the Prime Minister referenced, Titanic Belfast continues to prove immensely popular with visitors from across the world.”

Titanic Belfast is an iconic six-floor building featuring nine interpretive and interactive galleries that explore the sights, sounds, smells and stories of Titanic, as well as the City and people which made her. It is the world?s largest Titanic exhibition.

The building houses temporary exhibits, a banqueting suite, education and community facilities, catering and retail space, and a basement car park.

Visitors learn about the construction of RMS Titanic and the wide and rich story of Northern Ireland’s industrial and maritime Heritage.

THE ROYAL MINT OPEN IT’S DOORS TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 1100 YEARS

The Royal Mint is aiming to cash in – as a tourist destination by opening its steel doors to the public for the first time in 1,100 years.

Visitors will be allowed inside the high-security Royal Mint to see how five billion coins are made each year.

Bosses at the Mint – the oldest manufacturer in Britain – plan to make money by opening a new £7.7m visitors’ centre next year to attract tourists.

Curious visitors will be able to tour the inner workings of the factory where the coins and medals of more than 60 countries are made every year.

Shane Bissett, head of commemorative coin and medals, said: “This is an exciting development in our mission to welcome visitors to a unique behind the scenes experience.

“The new visitor centre will showcase over 1,000 years of coin-making history, and showcase the heritage, craftsmanship and innovation for which The Royal Mint is known all over the world.”

The giant Royal Mint factory in Llantrisant, near Cardiff, South Wales, will display the rich collections of historical medals and coins.

Armed Ministry of Defence Police oversee security of the 35-acre site which operates round-the-clock to produce 90 million coins a week.

A London mint started operation from around 650AD – although at one time there were about 70 mints making money for different banks.

But from the reign of Henry VIII only the Royal Mint was in operation in London.

It moved to Wales to be opened by the Queen in 1968 in readiness for the introduction of the decimal coinage – and employs more than 900 people.

The visitor centre is expected to open in the spring of 2016 after the Welsh Government has contributed a £2.3m grant towards the cost of the project creating 40 new jobs.

Tourism Minister Edwina Hart said the project had the potential to be an “iconic attraction” as visitors see how the money is made.

NY FLYRUTE BERGEN-SHETLAND

Shetland Sumburgh Airport – flyplassen ligger 31 kilometer sør for hovedstaden Lerwick.

EDINBURGH STEMTE IMOT SELVSTENDIGHET FOR SKOTTLAND
