Amsterdam, capital city of The Netherlands, prohibits guided tours of the “Red-light district”, the major tourist attraction where prostitutes are on display in windows.

‘Looking at sex workers as a tourist attraction is a thing of the past,’ says city financial councillor Udo Kock in a statement.

The Netherlands celebrates the year of rembrandt

Rembrandt, self portrait.

In The Netherlands, the Year of Rembrandt is marked this year, as it is 350 years since the painter, artist and graphic artist Rembrandt van Rijn died.

Rembrandt, one of the Baroque’s great masters, is celebrated throughout 2019.

The Rembrandt House Museum at Joodenbreestraat 4 in Amsterdam, where the artist lived and worked for a number of years, not far from the present-day city hall.

He purchased the house in 1639 and lived there until he went bankrupt in 1656, when all his belongings were auctioned off. The auction list enabled the reconstructions of all his belongings which are also on display in the house.

The museum opened in 1911, and includes 260 of the 290 most famous Rembrandt sketches.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on 15 July, 1606 in Leiden in the then Dutch Republic (now The Netherlands), and died 4 October, 1669 in Amsterdam, aged 63.

Amsterdam to up tax for tourists, with “falafel eaters” hit hardest

Amsterdam’s finance chief Udo Kock wants to increase the tax paid by tourists by up to 10 euros a day, the alderman told the Parool, according to the .dutchnews.nl websiite,

The plan, which will take effect in 2019, would mean an extra 150 million euros on top of the 80 millions which now flows into the capital’s coffers from tourist tax every year.

– The number of visitors will grow from 17 million to 23 million in the coming years and that means more cleaning and a greater police presence in the streets. And I want Amsterdammers to profit from the success of the city,” Udo Kock said.

Five options for increasing tourist tax are up for discussion but if it is up to Kock, the budget segment will be hit the hardest. In addition to the 5% tax on room prices, he favours adding “a couple of euros” for every visitor using hotels, Airbnb and B&Bs.

This, the Parool points out, will make tourism on a budget relatively more expensive.

– We need more people who actually spend money in the city. We would prefer people who stay a couple of nights, who visits museums, have lavish meals at restaurants to people who pop over for a weekend eating falafel while sauntering around the red light district,? Udo Kock is quoted as saying.

He also thinks that the pressure on the city can be relieved by making it more expensive so people may stay in other cities but would still visit the Dutch capital.

Amsterdam, capial of the Netherlands, continues to top a ranking of the best 50 Dutch cities to live in but Utrecht is closing the gap, researchers who produce the Atlas voor Gemeenten says, according to dutchnews.nl

The last issue was published 10 years ago but the top three – Amsterdam, Utrecht and Amstelveen, remain the same.

The ranking is based on 50 separate issues, ranging from education to parks, public safety and cultural amenities.

“Amsterdam owes its leading position to its historic inner city, its location, jobs market and its facilities”, researcher Gerard Marlet told broadcaster Nos.

“It has everything a city should have. However, public safety issues and growing inequality could have an impact on Amsterdam’s lead”, Marlet said.

In addition, tourism is beginning to affect people’s perception of the city and this could also cost Amsterdam in the future.

Dordrecht, up from 30 to 14, is the biggest riser in the ranking, while Hilversum, Delft and Oss are among the biggest losers.

Bottom of the list is Emmen in Drenthe, which is just below Sittard-Geleen and Spijkenisse.

Øldrikking og sykling er en dårlig kombinasjon, men i Amsterdam har man funnet en måte å kombinere øl og sykkel på, skriver Se og Hør.
