Martinique has announced a “not-to-be-missed” walking tour of Fort-de- France, the www.cruiseindustrynews.com website reported.

Among the highlights are:

Fort Saint Louis – Originally carved from a rocky promontory jutting out into The Bay of Fort-de-France, Fort Saint Louis dates back to 1640. Recently closed, when it was reinstated as an active military installation, the fort reopened to the public July 2014.

La Savane Park – The 12-acre Park built in the 18th century from land reclaimed from the sea and mangroves was originally used for training by French military stationed at Fort Saint Louis. In 1830 La Savane became known as Le Jardin du Roi (The Garden of the King). Its new purpose: to harbor scientific experiments on plant species that were new to the island, many of which are still present in the Park today.

Schoelcher Library – erected for the same 1889 World Fair in Paris that saw the debut of the Eiffel Tower, the Schoelcher Library stands as a tribute to French abolitionist Victor Schoelcher. Designed by Henri Picq, a contemporary of Gustave Eiffel, the library was dismantled piece by piece following the World Fair, shipped to Martinique, and reassembled in Fort-de-France along Rue de la Liberté just across from the La Savane Park.

Saint Louis Cathedral – also designed by Henri Picq, the Saint Louis Cathedral has a Gothic Revival architectural style standing out as the most prominent structure in downtown Fort-de-France. The Cathedral in its current form was built in 1895, though it is the seventh such church built on the same location one block northwest of La Savane since 1657.

All previous churches were destroyed by fire or natural disasters, prompting Picq to construct its entire frame out of steel, earning the structure the nickname “The Iron Cathedral”.

Le Marché Couvert – another Picq design, the Covered Market was originally constructed in 1901 and later restored in 1989. Bustling, it’s still the place to go for local Martinican spices, herbs, fruits, vegetables, arts and crafts. The restaurants within the market offer local cuisine.

Aimé Césaire Theater – Formerly the City Hall of Fort-de-France, where playwright, statesman, and civil rights leader Aimé Césaire maintained an office for more than 50 years, the Théâtre Aimé Césaire presents an example of Neoclassical architecture in the Caribbean. Constructed between 1884 and 1901, the building now houses a museum dedicated to Césaire upstairs.

To help visitors enjoy all that Fort-de-France has to offer, the city’s Tourism Office recently launched new self-guided audio tour maps. Available for rent through The Fort-de-France Tourism Office, the new maps are equipped with audio pens that enable visitors to hear details on featured attractions simply by pointing the pens on the attractions on the map.

Audio is available in a choice of English, French, Spanish, and Italian, with additional languages to be added in the coming months.

JetBlue will launch twice-a-week, non-stop flights from Boston to Port-au-Prince on 17 June 2015 through September 5, the Boston Haitian Reporter – www.bostonhaitian.com website reported.

JetBlue Flight 1147 will depart Boston at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays and arrive in Port-au-Prince at 2:15 p.m. Flight 1148 will depart Port-au-Prince at 3:15pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays and arrive in Boston at 7:40 p.m.

The new Haiti service will complement JetBlue’s existing daily flights from New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and twice daily service from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

“With Massachusetts having the third largest Haitian population in the United States, this news should be celebrated across the Commonwealth,” said State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry in a statement.

“JetBlue’s decision to offer this new, direct route from Boston to Port-au-Prince will not only help our Haitian residents maintain relationships with their families, but will support and strengthen new partnerships and business opportunities as well.”

“Port-au-Prince is a destination we know appeals to many Bostonians, and we want to thank the governor, the mayor, Massport and Senator Linda Dorcena Forry for their large roles in getting this service off the ground, they deserve the credit.” said Dave Clark, vice president, network planning, JetBlue Airways.

“This is another win for Boston travelers. JetBlue isn’t just the biggest carrier at Logan, but we offer more than twice as many destinations as any other airline to 58 destinations across the U.S., Caribbean and Latin America.”

Lush fauna and foliage are hallmarks on the Caribbean’s natural environment. This year, tourism officials in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) will recognize that legacy with a series of events to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the country’s Botanical Gardens, described as the Western Hemisphere’s oldest, the www.travelpulse.com website reported.

Agencies including the St. Vincent National Parks, Rivers and Beaches Authority have launched a series of celebratory events in this year to highlight the Gardens’ historic legacy as a conservation site and source for plant propagation.

Photo: botanicalgardens.gov.vc

“While there are countless sites within SVG that have unblemished natural beauty and “feel good” tranquility, our beloved Botanical Gardens are exceptionally important primarily because they feature various aspects of our country’s heritage and history”, said Glen Beache, CEO of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority.

“The Gardens remain an intrinsic part of our culture, our people, and the beauty that makes up our nation”, he said. “We hope visitors will make it a priority on their list of “must visit” SVG attractions.”

Located in the capital Kingstown region, the facility features peaceful, lush and colorful gardens filled with tropical plants, flowers, trees and birds.

Photo: botanicalgardens.gov.vc

The Gardens are designed promote the conservation of rare species and feature aviaries where guests can see the St. Vincent parrot, SVG’s national bird.

The Gardens originated in 1765 when General Robert Melville, governor of the then-British Caribbean islands, established a breeding center to provide medicinal plants for the military. Melville designated six acres previously designated for the military to be set aside for the Gardens.

The Gardens are also famous for being the captain William Bligh’s destination on his second Caribbean visit in 1798, during which he introduced breadfruit to the island. Bligh’s first trip to the region ended with the infamous Bounty mutiny. Breadfruit remains SVG’s national dish.

SVGTA’s botanic garden anniversary celebratory events will include a National Hero’s Day tree-planting event, a Botanical Treasure Hunt for children and a Regional Floral Competition featuring a plant sale and a local crafts and art exhibition.

The events kicked off in January with a parade from Kingstown to the Gardens featuring a symbolic re-enactment of Captain Bligh’s handing over of the breadfruit plant to SVG officials.
