Taj Mahal (på engelsk Crown of the Palace; Palassets pryd), ligger i byen Agra i delstaten Uttar Pradesh, nord i India, og 22 mil sør for hovedstaden New Dehli.

Taj Mahal ble i 1983 ført opp på FN-organisasjonen Unesco’s verdensarvliste (World Heritage List), og i 2007 ble mausoleet også utpekt til et av verdens sju nye underverk.

DELHI’S AIR POLLUTION WILL IMPACT TOURISM

Tourism will be impacted negatively by the “message” that India’s national capital is reeling under air pollution, India’s Minister for Culture Mahesh Sharma said today, as he batted for greater efforts to make the city pollution-free, www.ndtv.com reports.

Mr Sharma, however, felt that it was “practically impossible” to implement Delhi Government’s odd-even number formula for plying vehicles on city roads as a measure to curb pollution.

“The message that is going out to the world whether Delhi is a polluted capital… will have negative impact on tourism in the country.

Countrymen, especially people in Delhi, should take a pledge to make the city and country pollution-free.

“Tourism is our strength, to generate foreign exchange. This (pollution) will have impact on the same,” the Union Minister of Culture said.

The Minister made the remarks while speaking on the sidelines of launch of National Museum’s art gallery at Udyog Bhawan Metro Station in Delhi.

Mr Sharma urged people to keep in mind they do not hand over a legacy of polluted Delhi to future generations.

Responding to a question on reports of people using masks as a precautionary measure, the Minister stressed that “efforts should be made that people do not need to use mask in the first place”.

“If experts find air pollution levels high, doctors may have to suggest people to wear mask (as precaution) in that case,” he added.

On Arvind Kejriwal Government’s formula to ply vehicles with odd-even number on road to curb pollution, Mr Sharma said, “He (Kejriwal) has made an effort. But practically it looks impossible.”

Mr Sharma also urged people to have a glimpse India’s culture through National Museum.

“It (launching the gallery) is a small effort by the Ministry along with Metro to bring India’s culture from museum to metro station, where lakhs of people come and go daily. The gallery is an invitation to people to come and have glimpse of country’s culture and civilisation,” he added.

In a radical step to curb air pollution, Delhi Government had last Friday announced private vehicles bearing odd and even registration numbers will be allowed to ply only on alternate days starting January 1.

The formula will be in force between 8 am and 8 pm for an initial period of 15 days and there will be no restrictions on vehicular movement on Sundays, the Delhi government had said yesterday.

New Delhi city government has joined hands with the Event and Entertainment Management Association (EEMA) to host events in the capital through easy licensing norms. The first such event is the NH7 Weekender which is scheduled for November 28 and 29, indiatimes.com reported.

Tourism minister Kapil Mishra also said the government does not encourage the `pass culture’ prevalent in the city. “I have bought tickets for the event which is the most basic courtesy every elected representative of the city and Delhi government officials can extend to the artistes and teams that put such together such shows.

Asking for free passes, bribery at events using misleading and misinterpreted regulations and blatant misuse of power is something we are strongly against,” he said.

“Ease of doing business” has been a major point on Delhi government’s agenda and it has also set up a committee to look into simplifying the licensing process.

Mishra said that to promote Delhi as a cultural and entertainment hub, it was necessary to attract artists and performers through easy access.

“This move will be a mutually beneficial public-private partnership and will usher in an era of l minimum government and maximum governance. We will work with Delhi Police on single-window event clearance. Joint branding support will help bolster revenue which will further our investment in sectors like water, electricity , education and health,” Mishra added.

The music festival will also allow artists and craftspersons to showcase their work. There will be a variety of food, art installations, stage design etc. Sabbas Joseph, president, EEMA said: “We are delighted that Delhi Tourism has embraced the events industry in order to put this initiative in place with EEMA. We hope other states will follow.”

POPULAR NEW DEHLI TOURIST ATTRACTION GOES SOLAR

A popular attraction in the Indian capital New Dehli, the Lotus Temple is one of the few tourist spots to tap renewable energy. A part of the temple is now being run on solar Power – a move the Delhi city government must consider for other monuments in the national capital, according to a newsitem in The Hindu, eturbonews.com reported.

The temple, which utilises around 500 kilowatt of power in total, generates 120 KW on its own. Besides, it is the first major public site in Delhi to have installed a “net metre”. This has made the temple the first in the city to be a part of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (DERC) “Net Metering” regulations.

Members of the Lotus Temple (M/s National Spiritual Assembly) said the move had helped them save around Rs 120000 as electricity bills every month.

Jai Prakash (Service Manager of the Baha’i House of Worship) said that the move was to keep the “essence” of the temple intact. “We are happy that we took the decision to shift to solar power. After all, we are all the fruits of one tree and the leaves of one branch,” Mr. Prakash said.

The temple has installed more than 400 photo-voltaic panels, each of which produces around 250 watts. The power so generated is being used for lighting and even cooking purposes.
