Athens mayor points to record year for city's tourism in 2015

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis told reporters on Tuesday that the Greek capital attracted some 4.1 million foreign visitors in 2015, while pointing to a ‘dramatic increase’ between 2014 and 2016, tornosnews.gr reported.

Mr Kaminis spoke at a press conference after the holding of the fourth annual Travel Trade Athens event.

The Athens mayor said it was the best figure ever for tourism arrivals in the Greek capital, which has seen its fair share of upheavals and social pressure during seven straight years of economic meltdown in the country.

Additionally, he promised that municipal duties – slapped on electricity bills – will have been reduced by 20 percent when his tenure is completed in 2019.

Athens

It’s been a busy winter in downtown Athens, where scaffolding, tarpaulins and dust have been symbols of hope: a mini construction boom heralding a tourist renaissance, The Guardian newspaper reported.

Nine hotels are being built or restored around the city centre. Their arrival correlates with the huge upturn in holidaymakers visiting the Greek capital since a low point in late 2008.

“It’s a miracle, what’s been happening in Athens?”, Greece’s tourism chief, Andreas Andreadis, told the Observer newspaper. “The tourist industry in Greece grew two to three times faster than in Spain, Portugal, Italy or France last year. This year we expect around 4.5 million visitors in Athens alone.”

A record 23.5 million holidaymakers visited Greece in 2015 – generating 14.2 bn euros in direct receipts, or 24% of gross domestic product.

In 2010, at the start of the country’s debt crisis – which has seen it struggle to avert default and remain in the euro – revenues from tourism were 10 bn euros, or 15% of GDP.

ATHENS IDEAL FOR A LOW-BUDGET CHRISTMAS BREAK

Athens ranks among the most popular Christmas holiday destinations in Europe, with inexpensive accommodation to boot, according to data released by international hotel price comparison website Trivago, ekathimerini.com reported.

Athens was 24th out of the 50 most popular European destinations as shown by searches made around the world for the Christmas period. It also ranked joint fourth with Budapest among the most attractive cities in financial terms for hotel accommodation, as the average online rate per night for the period in the Greek capital comes to 74 euros for a double room. Athens was beaten by Valencia (66 euros/night), Krakow (68 euros) and Malaga (73 euros).

The average stay in Athens appears to be six days, with the capital being the only Greek city in the top 50, while Spain has 13 entries.

Meanwhile Athens International Airport and Marketing Greece has presented their new campaign to promote Athens as a city break destination, titled “Speak Athenian, Be an Athenian.”

Iosif Parsalis, general manager of Marketing Greece, stated that the new integrated digital campaign, which uses a mix of Greek and English terms with Greek and Latin characters, is aimed at the 24-40 age group. He added that greater emphasis has been placed on attracting visitors from specific countries, among them Germany, France, Great Britain and the US.

AIA’s communication and marketing director, Ioanna Papadopoulou, noted that part of the campaign will involve a series of themed events both at the airport and in the city itself in cooperation with tourism entities and other bodies.

ATHENS HOTELIERS: ARRIVALS GROW BUT HOTEL OCCUPANCY FALLS BECAUSE OF PRIVATELY RENTED HOUSES

Tourists keep on coming to Athens, but a lot of them stay in the 8,000 houses that are rented privately in the Greek capital, tornosnews.gr reports.

Consequently, Athenian hotels fail to reap the benefits from the rise of arrivals, recorded at the Athens International Airport. According to the Athens-Attica and Argosaronic Hotel Association, they suffered the effects of falling demand during the September-November period despite a increase in visitors to the Greek capital.

The Association’s president Alexandros Vassilikos said at a press conference on Tuesday that the impressive 23 percent increase in foreign tourist arrivals to Athens does not reflect on the occupancy of hotels in the Attica area.

The average occupancy rate in Athens during the first 11 months of 2015 did not exceed 3.7 percent and dropped by 3.8 percent in September, by 6.1 percent in October and by 4.6 percent in November.

Mr Vassilikos asked “where are all these visitors to Athens staying” and pointed towards the thousands of properties that are currently operating illegally as accommodation units in the Greek capital.

He underlined that over 8,000 properties are currently operating illegally in Athens and called on the government to protect the hotel enterprises that operate within the law.

As the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels reported earlier, hosting of tourists in illegal accommodation causes legitimate hotels to lose 12 million overnight stays, which translates to over 500 million euros of less revenue.

Mr Vassilikos noted that Athens still has the lowest average room rate – 90 euros compared to other European countries and added that strategic choices must be made for Athens as a destination to increase visitor numbers.

These choices include upgrading existing hotels, promoting the Áttica Riviera and establishing a metropolitan conference center within the city.
