A heritage group has criticised a decision that paves the way for major changes to Douglas railway station, the Isle of Man Today – www.iomtoday.co.im website writes.

An independent inspector has approved the Department of Infrastructure’s £1.4m plan that includes remodelling the interior of the ticket hall.

In an attempt to make the station more commercially viable, a shop will be created on the ground floor and the restaurant will be moved into a greatly-extended mezzanine level that will cover most of the hall.

Peter Kelly, caseworker for the Isle of Man Victorian Society, told iomtoday: “It’s a very poor compromise that will not go down well with the railway enthusiasts who we’re trying to encourage.

“The feeling and ambience of the ticketing hall will be lost.

“If you can visualise a 4ft gap where people must crane their necks, it won’t achieve what it’s trying to achieve, which is giving the feel of the large hall that once existed”.

He continued: “Douglas station is the showcase of the island’s heritage railways. Given that the island is marketing heritage railways as an attraction, it’s ironic – if not heretic – to be messing about with something original like this”.

“Now that it has the benefit of planning permission and registered building consent, the die is cast and it would only be Treasury or Tynwald, by not granting the necessary funds, that would stop it.”

In a statement, Ian Longworth, director of public transport, said: “We are happy the planning inspector agreed that building repairs are essential and our Minister will now seek Tynwald approval for the work to commence this winter”.

“It is our intention to make Douglas Station more commercially viable, with any alterations designed to sympathetically enhance the original station and improve our passenger facilities”.

The Gibraltar Tourist Board has completed the third phase of its refurbishment of the visitor attractions, The Gibraltar Chronicle – www.chronicle.gi reported.

The works on the main attractions on the Upper Rock are part of a continuous commitment by the Government of Gibraltar to improve the tourist product. 

O’Hara’s Battery has seen a major overhaul with machinery being restored to its original state. The exhibition now boasts new information panels complemented with screens that provide an instructive commentary about the Battery and the firing of the 9.2 inch gun. An interactive panel adds a new experience to the site. 

Gun barrels mounted on replicas of carriages in St George’s Hall are another improvement carried out to the Great Siege Tunnels. Mannequins of a gun crew have been placed next to one of the guns and, at the interactive panel; visitors will even experience the sound of gun fire. 

Gibraltar

Works are now under way to open Cornwallis Chamber. This new chamber will be accessed via a new spiral staircase from the Great Siege Tunnels. The attraction will also have information panels installed with mannequins and props to complement the experience. 

The “City Under Siege” exhibition is a site where all mannequins and exhibits are exposed to the elements. 

This site has undergone extensive refurbishment, and a 10 minute documentary will be playing at this location. A picnic area at the entrance enhances this picturesque site. 

Further to the improved facilities carried out at the World War II Tunnels last year, the attraction has been enhanced by creating three exhibit areas, which depict life in the tunnels as it was during the war years. 

In addition, the ticket office at Jews’ Gate has been refurbished to improve facilities for the Upper Rock team. 

Samantha Sacramento, the Minister for Tourism, acknowledged the work carried out by her predecessor in this ministry, Neil Costa, to develop Gibraltar’s tourism offering. 

She said the government’s “unprecedented Investment” in tourism and the Upper Rock reflected its support for the tourism industry and delivered an enhanced experience for our visitors. 

“Our commitment to tourism will no doubt be welcomed by all those working in the local tourism, retail, and hospitality industry”.

I Novi Sad, hovedstad i den autonome serbiske provinsen Vojvodina, bærer en populær kafe den russiske presidentens etternavn, og provinsen har også et eget politisk parti som støtter Russland og Putin. Ca.1200 av provinsens innbyggere er etniske russere, men Putins tilhengerskare strekker seg langt utover deres rekker.

Et av partimedlemmene, Radivoj Miljanic, eieren av Cafe Putin, la opp til en storstilt feiring av den russiske presidentens 62-års dag 7.oktober i fjor, med en stor kake, og serbiske og russiske flagg, skriver www.inserbia.info

Partitalsmenn og kafeeieren sier de med kafeen og hyllesten av Putin generelt vil gjøre heder og ære på mannen for “alt han har gjort for Serbia” og at folk setter stor pris på at han motsetter seg “vestlige makter”.

Radivoj Miljanic sier folk flests reaksjoner var positive, og at de som eventuelt var negative “gidder han ikke engang å tenke på”.

Noen klaget imidlertid på at det ikke var musikk i kafeen under feiringen, og ikke lenge etter kunne man høre “Kalinka” ut gjennom kafevinduene.

Vojvodina er en autonom provins i Serbia med ca.2 millioner innbyggere. Provinsen består av hele 26 ulike etniske grupper, og den har ikke mindre enn seks offisielle språk. Serbere utgjør den største gruppen, ca.67 prosent, mens ungarere utgjør den nest største med 13 prosent. Ellers bor der etniske slovakere, kroater, rom-folk, rumenere, montegrinere, makedonere, ukrainere, tyskere, slovenere, albanere, bulgarere, russere, og bosniaker, for å nevne noen.

En eksplosjon med påfølgende brann i et kraftverk i Gibraltar i påsken skapte store problemer for gamblingindustrien på internett, skriver BBC.

An explosion and fire on Gibraltar disrupted a number of online betting operations on Sunday.

Most residents of the British territory were also left without power.

Local media reported a generator at Waterport Power Station caught fire and exploded due to a mechanical failure.

No-one was injured, but the outage shut down the online betting operations of several firms, including William Hill, Betfred and Ladbrokes, which are based in Gibraltar.

Online gambling is an important part of Gibraltar’s economy with international companies choosing to base themselves there because of the territory’s low taxes.

 The outage meant many people were unable to play bets online on a busy Easter Sunday of sport.

‘Freak event’

William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said its services were disrupted for about two-and-a-half hours.

He told AFP: “It’s just one of those freak events nobody could have predicted.

“There will be those who will claim they would have backed a winner but there will be others who have been saved from backing a loser.”

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the blaze erupted.

The power station was evacuated and the fire quickly extinguished.

Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo praised the emergency services for their response after power was restored.

He also tweeted: “Power restored to whole of Gibraltar. At last.

“Power outage too long. New plans must reflect lessons of such incidents so we never repeat.”
