Australias ikoniske koalaer (også kalt koalabjørn og pungbjørn( kan være praktisk talt utryddet, selv om de ikke er fullstendig borte, advarer landets koalastiftelse AKF.
Ifølge AKF er det bare 80.000 koalaer igjen, noe som ikke er nok til å sikre langsiktig overlevelse melder NTB, ifølge NRK.
I Australia har tusenvis av surfere protestert mot Equinor (tidl.Statoil) sine planer om å starte oljeleting utenfor Australias kyst.
Surferne sier nei til all oljeleting.

En mor i 20-årene og hennes ni år gamle sønn hadde nettopp gått ut av bilen på øya, som står på FN-organisasjonen UNESCOs verdensarvliste – World Heritage List – da de kom over en flokk dingoer.
– De fikk panikk og løp tilbake mot bilen, og da satte flokken i gang jakten og gikk til angrep, forteller talsmann Michael Augustus i ambulansetjenesten i Queensland.
Moren slapp fra det med mindre bitt, stort sett nederst på armene og beina. Gutten hadde betydelig mer omfattende skader på armer, bein og i ansiktet, opplyser Augustus.
De to turistene ble til sykehus, og tilstanden deres beskrives som stabil.

En av dingoene som angrep, ble fanget og avlivet av naturoppsynet fredag, mens en annen ble avlivet søndag, opplyser myndighetene.
I januar ble en seks år gammel gutt bitt etter å ha løpt opp på en sanddyne. Fraser island er verdens største sandøy og er et populært reisemål – med dingoene som ett av trekkplastrene, i tillegg til de lange sandstrendene.
Myndighetene går jevnlig ut med advarsler og minner folk om at dingoene er ville. Turister oppfordres til å holde barna sine i nærheten, ikke løpe og ikke mate villhundene. Dingoen er en urhund som skiller seg fra både ulv og fra tamhunder.
Den mest kjente varianten hører hjemme i Australia, men det finnes også dingoer i Asia og på Ny-Guinea.
Fraser Island er 1840 km2 stor, og ligger 200 km nord for Brisbane. Den er 122 km lang, og mellom 5 og 25 km bred. På sitt høyeste er øya 235 meter over havet. Sanden går flere steder så dypt som 60 meter under havnivået

Den 5,2 meter lange krokodillen ble skutt i byen Rockhampton i Queensland i september 2017.

As part of its research, TIME built a database of more than 400,000 Instagram photos tagged “selfie” that included geographic coordinates.
In total, 459 cities were ranked to determine the selfiest places on earth.
Canberra comes in at Australia’s selfiest city, with 18 selfies per 100,000 people (ranked 169 on the world list), while Sydney-siders aren’t far behind, with 18 selfies per 100,000 people but ranked at 171 on the world list.
Melbourne and Brisbane come in at three and four respectively on the Australian list, with our Perth friends proving the most camera shy at just 12 selfies per 100,000 people.
Makati City, in the Phillipines, is the world’s selfiest city, followed closely by Manhattan, New York at number two and Miami, Florida at number three.
And when it comes to the perfect selfie, you can’t beat our cultural institutions for a stunning backdrop.
Data from Instagram shows the Australian War Memorial is the top geotagged location for pics in Canberra (13,429 tags in 2016) and our beautiful Lake Burley Griffin isn’t far behind (12,597 tags last year).
The National Gallery of Australia is up next with 10,827 tags in 2016. Surprisingly, the Australian National University is a destination of choice for Instagram pics, with almost as many people tagging themsleves at the university as Parliament House (8257 and 8318 tags respectively).
The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) generally is the eighth most geotagged location in Australia on Instagram – Bondi Beach is number one.
