The Jakarta Great Sale Festival (FJGS) 2017 is expected to increase the number of tourists visiting the capital of Indoneaia, a Jakarta tourism official stated, according to the Netralnews.com website.

“The FJGS program has continued to improve every year, and it is expected that the number of tourists will also increase through this activity,” Head of Jakarta Tourism and Culture Service Catur Laswanto noted.

He remarked that Jakarta has an advantage in the form of numerous shopping centers and malls that make the capital a tourist destination.

“Unlike other regions that have natural wealth that makes them a tourist destination, Jakarta has several shopping centers, and this is a tourist attraction,” Laswanto emphasized.

The tourism official is optimistic that the FJGS 2017 will be able to compete with various shopping festivals in other Asian countries, as the products on offer are more complete and are available at lower prices.

The FJGS will be held from June 2 to July 12, 2017. This event will be followed by 81 malls or shopping centers, 40 traditional markets of the Jakarta market operator PD Pasar Jaya, and 12 hotels and retailers from shopping centers.

During the FJGS 2017, a midnight shopping program or Midnight Sale will be held every week alternately in 27 shopping centers in Jakarta. In addition to the shopping program, the FJGS 2017 will also hold social activities.

In collaboration with the Jakarta Red Cross, the FJGS committee will hold Mass Blood Donation events in 36 shopping centers in Jakarta during the FJGS 2017.

The Kingdom Bahrain has decided to set up an embassy in Malaysia to strengthen bilateral relations, The New Straits Times newspaper reported.

Bahrain Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid Ahmed said his government will send a team to the Malaysian capital city Kuala Lumpur to make the necessary arrangements over the next two months.

“Within the next two months, our technical team will come here and look into the right premises and the necessary arrangements to open the embassy,” Sheikh Khalid said during a joint press conference with Malaysia’s Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

Sheikh Khalid also said Bahrain is taking necessary steps to implement a visa-free travel policy between the two countries.

He added that Bahrain and Malaysia have many similarities, including culture and general atmosphere.

The Foreign Minister is in Malaysia as part of Bahrain’s King Hamad Isa Al Khalifa’s four-day state visit, which began on April 30.

The visit is historic, as it is the first by a Bahraini ruler to Malaysia in 43 years of diplomatic relations.

Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Sen, says the Angkor Sangkranta-festival should be organised across the country, next year, besides the current venue in Siem Reap,  the ttrweekly.com website reported.

Agence Kampuchea Presse quoted the PM saying  the festival should be held in all provinces and the capital city Phnom Penh to add value to the traditional New Year celebrations and raise awareness of the country’s culture through special events.

The event has been included in the Visit ASEAN@50 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN and to embrace ASEAN as a single tourist destination.

Angkor Sankranta, is held in Siem Reap during the Khmer New Year to build and display Cambodian family  values as a whole and to contribute to maintaining Cambodian traditions, culture, and customs.

Organised by the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia, Angkor Sankranta has drawn more than 1 million local and foreign visitors to experience many of Cambodia’s customs amidst the beautiful ancient Angkor temples.

The festival presents traditional folk dances and games, bullock races, Khmer orchestra recitals, and other performances that correspond to the theme for the year.

Food is a major Angkor Sankranta drawcard. It usually involves the cooking of two four-ton traditional Cambodian cakes, Num Treap Bay, a sticky rice dessert with toasted sesame seeds, and Num Ple Ay, glutinous rice balls filled with palm sugar.

This year, the 5th Angkor Sangkranta in Siem Reap, held 14 to 16 April, attracted more than 1,631,000 million domestic and foreign tourists, a 23% increase, generating an income of about USD95 million, the report said.

Ministry of Tourism has urged tourism operators and related businesses to maintain prices during major festivals particularly Angkor Sankranta to ensure consumers are protected and they gain a positive perception of the Cambodian travel experience.

Jakarta

The Indonesian government plans by the end of the year to finish assessing potential alternative cities that could become Indonesia?s new capital, The Jakarta Post reported.

National Development Planning Board head Bambang Brodjonegoro said Monday that the government was determined to move the Indonesian capital out of Java. He said Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan was one of the options.

– It has to be outside Java, Bambang said on the sidelines of the Regional Workshop on Country Safeguard Systems as quoted by Antara news agency.

– The final decision will come within this year.

In the search for the country’s new capital city, Bambang explained that Bappenas was looking at the availability of land and natural resources around the potential cities. He, however, declined to detail the list of the alternatives besides Palangkaraya.

The government included Palangkaraya on the list because former president Soekarno had planned to move the capital city there.

Japan opens first tourism office in Vietnam, and hopes to double the number of visitors from Vietnam by 2018, the e.vnexpress.net website reported.

The office in Hanoi will assist Vietnamese travel agencies in bringing more tourists to Japan. There are only 15 similar Japanese offices in other countries.

Tourism officials hope to increase the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan from 233,800 last year to around 500,000 by 2018. Vietnam targets 1 million Japanese visitors, up from 740,000 last year.

Vietnam’s fast-growing economy has created an increasingly large middle class who can now afford holidays overseas.

Ayumi Takahasi, a representative of JNTO in Hanoi, said that the office will organize a range of promotional activities in the coming time.

The Vietnam Tourism Association set up its first tourism representative office in Tokyo in 2014.
