Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan have agreed to launch three new bus services among them under the BBIN motor vehicles agreement, Bangladesh Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said.

The agreement was signed on June 15 in Thimphu, Bhutan, by the transport ministers of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal, www.dhakatribune.com reports.

After the signing, Quader met Bhutan’s Information and Communications Minister Lyonpo Dhungyel and they reached a decision to launch two bus services between Dhaka and Thimphu, the first of its kind between the two countries.

Quader also met Nepal’s Physical Infrastructure and Transport Minister Bimalendra Nidhi and the two decided to launch a Dhaka-Kathmandu bus service.

Quader told reporters that the initial decision to launch three trans-border bus services had been made. Sources said two of the three new bus routes are Dhaka-Thimphu via India’s Joygong and Bhutan’s Phuesoreng, which will pass through Burimari border, and Dhaka-Thimphu via India’s Guwahati and Bhutan’s Samdrup Jongkhar, which will pass through Tamabil border in Sylhet.

The other route is Dhaka-Kathmandu via India’s Panitanki and Nepal’s Kakarbhitta. It will pass through Bangladesh’s Banglabandha border. Road Transport and Bridges Ministry’s Joint Secretary Chandan Kumar Dey said bilateral and trilateral protocols would be needed before launching the new bus services.

He also said valid documents would be needed for vehicles to enter from one country to another. Quader earlier said vehicles crossing the BBIN countries must have insurance coverage and authorised officials can search them.

“They will not be allowed to take passengers while in another country during the journey.”

At present, Bangladesh and India have a bilateral arrangement on passenger movement but Bangladeshi vehicles can enter Nepal or Bhutan through India and vice versa once the new agreement takes effect.

TAJIKISTAN: DUSHANBE BANS “UN-TAJIK” BLACK CLOTHES

The mayor of Tajikistan’s capital city of Dushanbe has ordered shops to stop selling black clothing for women, in the latest move against Islamic cultural influences in the country, the BBC.com reports.

The Mayor, Mahmadsaid Ubaydulloyev, wants existing stock to be removed from the shelves because he says it doesn’t fit with Tajikistan’s culture and traditions, the privately-owned Asia-Plus news agency reports.

He has also told officials to prevent women’s garments from being imported if they’re black. The move is being seen as part of a broader government campaign against the adoption of Islamic cultural practices in Tajik society, including women wearing black headscarves.

Dushanbe

In March, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon used a Mother’s Day speech to criticise women who wear “foreign” clothing. Mr Rahmon told a crowd of women’s activists that “strangers” were using the clothes “to create another new extremist trend” in Tajikistan.

While colourful headscarves are considered traditional in the country, black hijabs are frowned upon, according to the agency. Hijabs were banned in schools and universities in 2005. More than 90% of the Tajik population is Muslim, but atheism was officially encouraged during 70 years of Soviet rule.

It’s not just black clothing on officials’ minds, though. The justice ministry wants to amend the law to force parents into giving their children traditionally Tajik names.

“If the amendments get approved, our offices would refuse to register babies with names that are Arabic or foreign to our culture,” ministry official Jaloliddin Rahimov tells the Radio Free Europe website.

Wyndham Hotel Group opened its second hotel in the capital city of Uzbekistan, Tashkent. Dedeman Silk Road Tashkent Hotel was renamed to Wyndham Tashkent, the Focus On Travel News – www.ftnnews.com website reported.

According to the company, the hotel started its work under new brand Wyndham Tashkent from 1 January 2015. The hotel worked under Dedeman Silk Road Tashkent worked in Tashkent from May 2003.

Wyndham Hotel Group has been running hotel Ramada Tashkent (former Park Turon) since 2013.

The hotel is only 8 kilometers (4.9 miles) from the Tashkent Airport in the heart of the modern city. The central business district and many of the exciting restaurants and other attractions are located within just 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) of the hotel.

The city emerged from the devastating 1966 earthquake stronger than ever, completely modernizing its infrastructure in the process of re-building.

The city continues to embrace a forward-looking vision, as evidenced in its towering skyscrapers and competitive universities.

Tashkent’s metro is the only one in Central Asia, and each station features distinctive architecture and décor that reflects the rich cultural and artistic heritage of the region.

This is emblematic of the city as a whole, which is at once resolutely modern and steeped in tradition. Wherever you look there are subtle and not-so-subtle reminders of the past.

Among the wide boulevards of the new city the past occasionally emerges in the form of ancient mosques, madrassas, and bazaars.
