Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam plans to welcome 30 million visitors, including 5.7 million foreigners, by 2020, according to the municipal Department of Tourism, Vietnamnet.vn reported.
Hanoi also hopes to generate US$ 5.36 billion in tourism revenue by 2020, with an annual growth of 15-17 per cent till then.
Head of the tourism department Do Dinh Hong said the city would continue to develop infrastructure, improve tourism products in terms of quality and diversity and have better human resources in a move to make tourism more sustainable and a key industry.
The department’s statistics revealed that Hanoi posted annual growth of more than 10 per cent in tourist arrivals in recent years. In 2015, the city attracted approximately 19.7 million travellers. Of them, 3.3 million came from overseas, accounting for 40 per cent of the foreign visitors to Vietnam.
The number of travellers coming to the city reached more than 11 million in the first half of this year, including two million foreigners, up 30 per cent year-on-year. That has earned the city $1.4 billion.
During the reviewed period, most foreign tourists came from China, South Korea, Japan and the United Kingdom, besides Australia, the United States, France and Germany.
However, the department said, the number of international visitors to Vietnam was still much lower than that of other capital cities in the region. It was just one-sixth of the number of visitors going to Bangkok, and one-third that of Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
Hanoitourist Director Do Duc Ke said the capital city needed to make greater efforts to affirm its position as the country’s largest tourist centre.
Top priority should be given to developing attractive tourism packages and perfecting the quality of existing tourist services, he said.

King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway began their third State Visit to Finland today. They are accompanied by several government ministers as well as a large delegation of representatives of Norwegian trade and industry, according to the Royal Court website, www.kongehuset.no
President Sauli Niinistö and Mrs Jenni Haukio welcomed Their Majesties to Finland this morning in a formal ceremony in front of the Presidential Palace in Helsinki, the capital.
The national anthems of Finland and Norway were played, and then the King inspected the honour guard together with President Niinistö.

Following the ceremony, the King and Queen and the President and his wife went into the Presidential Palace for discussions, official photographs and an exchange of gifts. They took advantage of the fine weather and greeted the crowds waiting outside from the Palace balcony.
King Harald and Queen Sonja had a number of meetings with Finnish leaders today. Following the meeting with the president, their schedule included discussions with members of the Norwegian and Finnish delegations, followed by a meeting with the Speaker of the Parliament of Finland, Ms Maria Lohela.
The meeting took place at the Little Parliament, where the King and Queen also met with other members of the Finnish parliament. In the afternoon, the King and Queen visited the Prime Minister’s Official Residence, Kesäranta, where they met with Prime Minister Juha Sipilä and were given a brief tour of the residence’s beautiful gardens.
The Chair of Helsinki City Council, Ms Mari Puoskari, hosted a luncheon at Helsinki City Hall in honour of the State Visit. At the luncheon, King Harald gave his first speech of the visit, emphasising the close friendship between Finland and Norway and thanking the hosts for the warmth with which the King and Queen have always been met.
“But what strikes us most once again is the friendliness and naturally open approach of the Finnish people. We are visiting good neighbours – and that is precisely how it feels.”
The Hietaniemi Cemetery was established in 1829 and is the site where Finnish state funerals are held. The cemetery includes an area called the Heroes’ Place, with monuments commemorating the soldiers who fought for Finnish independence during the Winter War (1939?1940).
One of the most moving monuments is a memorial wall engraved with the names of 734 fallen soldiers who disappeared or whose remains were never returned.
King Harald and Queen Sonja lay a wreath at the Heroes’ Cross and at the grave of Marshal Mannerheim. They also placed flowers at the monument to the 700 Norwegian volunteers who fought for Finland in the Winter War, and where two of these soldiers are buried.
This evening, the King and Queen will be the guests of honour at a gala banquet held at the Presidential Palace. King Harald will give a speech to the hosts.
The State Visit will continue tomorrow with a programme dedicated to Norwegian-Finnish business cooperation.

The introduction of Turkish Airlines flights to Seychelles will bring benefits to the tourism sector and local business, says a top official of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Seychelles News Agency reported.
Direct flights from Istanbul to the Seychelles capital city Victoria, on Mahe island, are expected to start in October and will be operated by an A330-200.
The chair of the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Wilson Nancy, told the news agency that: ‘Direct access to the Turkish market will provide great traffic for Seychellois businessmen to shop in Turkey, especially for textile and consumables.’
Records from the National Bureau of Statistics show that Seychelles is already importing fruit and vegetable juices, pasta, dried leguminous vegetable, olive oil and milk from Turkey.
Mr Nancy said that when the flights start, businesses will be in better positions to source goods like construction materials, which are more affordable in Turkey, benefiting local contractors.
Tourism, the first pillar of the Seychelles’ economy, is another industry that will benefit from the three weekly flights from Istanbul.
‘The flights from the Turkish Airlines will not only bring tourists from Turkey. It will connect us to the rest of the world. Turkey is an airline hub in Europe, giving us an advantage in that region,’ said Alain St. Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture.
Turkish Airlines is the national carrier of Turkey and a member of the Star Alliance, which is the largest global airline alliance.
The airline, currently flying to Madagascar and Mauritius, ‘is working closely with Seychelles to see which of the local market needs more attention so as to see them grow,’ said St. Ange.
The national carrier ofTurkey is flying to Madagascar and Mauritius, both belonging to the Vanilla Island group.
The airline has invited representatives of Mauritius, Madagascar and Seychelles to participate in a road show that will take place in Bucharest, Budapest and Prague.
Representatives from these island nations will meet with travel agents and tour operators as well as bring together hotels, Destination Management Companies andtourism boards.
‘They will be pushing the Vanilla Island concept forward. Turkish Airlines is our new partner in promoting this region,’ said Tourism Minister Alain St Ange.
