MOROCCO OPENS EMBASSY IN PANAMA

The Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Panama was inaugurated yesterday. The opening ceremony in Panama City Tuesday was led by Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar. In April 2014, the Embassy of Panama was opened in the Moroccan capital Rabat.

The Moroccan government officials highlighted that the withdrawal by Panama of its recognition of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (Western Sahara / SADR) was part of the efforts of Panama to consolidate relations with its African partners.

Diplomatic relations between Panama and the self-proclaimed SADR were established in 1979 and suspended in  2013, five months before the opening of the Panamanian Embassy in Morocco.

However, on January 7, the ruling Democratic Revolutionary Party welcomed the resumption of diplomatic relations between Panama and the SADR, and the Embassy of the Saharawi Republic was re-opened in Panama.

On Wednesday, the Vice-President and Foreign Minister of Panama, Isabel de Saint Malo argued in a statement that the re-opening of the Embassy of the self-proclaimed SADR in Panama does not affect Moroccan-Panamanian relations.

“The lifting of the suspension of relations between Panama and the SADR is an isolated problem in our relationship with Morocco for which we demonstrated our willingness to strengthen it,” Minister de Saint Malo said after the inauguration of the Moroccan Embassy in Panama.

ETHIOPIA STOPS EXPANSION OF ADDIS ABEBA FOLLOWNG DEMONSTRATIONS FROM THE OROMO ETHNIC GROUP

The government of Ethiopia has stopped the expansion of Addis Ababa following demonstrations from the Oromo ethnic group.

The aim of the master plan is to add areas around Addis Ababa into the city’s developing economy, reports africanews.com

Oromo farmers fear that the city’s master plan could displace their population. According to human rights groups at least 140 people have been killed by security forces during protests organised by the Oromo tribe.

The Ethiopian government has contested the death toll of human rights groups claiming the figures are overestimated.

The Oromo’s People’s Democratic Organisation(OPDO) said the decision was taken after three days of discussions in Adama town.

OPDO believes any issue on which common consensus is not reached with the public will not be implemented.

The plan was suppose to be jointly implemented by the Addis Ababa city authority and the Oromo ethnic group.

A report by human right watch condemned the recent arrest of Bekele Gerba, deputy chairman of the Oromo Federalist Congress claiming the Ethiopian government was targeting prominent Oromo intellectuals who have an influence over the population.

Ethiopian authorities were urged to allow people to peacefully protest and ensure that farmers are protected from forced displacement without consultation and adequate compensation.

Oromo is a large ethnic group in Ethiopia and covers about 284,538 square kilometres.

According to statistics carried out in 2007, its population stands at over 27 million inhabitants.

Four Seasons has opened reservations for the second of its hotels in the Colombian capital, Bogota, reports ttgmedia.com

Four Seasons Hotel Bogota is a reworking of the city’s former Hotel Charleston and when it opens in April, the group said it will “usher in a new era in luxury hospitality in one of the world’s most exciting destinations”.

The completely remodelled building joins the just-opened Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogota.

More than half of the Four Seasons Hotel Bogota inventory will be suites and all have been designed by Lauren Rotett, of US practice Rotett Studio, which has an extensive portfolio of corporate and hospitality projects.

The hotel is in the heart of the city’s Zona T, where there are several blocks of pedestrian-only streets with restaurants, nightspots and Calle de la Moda, or Fashion Avenue.

“Our two Four Seasons hotels in Bogota complement each other, and both are unlike any other in the world,” said general manager Luis Argote, who grew up in the city.

Bathrooms have been completely replaced, and in-room technology overhauled throughout, while a new spa will offer treatments by French brand Biologique Recherche.

Four Seasons will also launch Kuru, overseen by chef Pablo Penalosa and inspired by Japanese robata grill cooking. The grill features prominently at the centre of the restaurant, which also has a sushi bar and has been given streetfront and back terraces by designer Saul Sasson.
