Tourists have traveled to Egypt’s ancient pyramids and historic monuments for centuries, businessinsider.com reported.
But tourism has dropped rapidly in recent years, as violent conflicts following the 2011 revolution have been particularly successful in scaring off travelers.
According to a recent Reuters article, 9.9 million tourists visited Egypt in 2014, compared to 14.7 million people in 2010. The country’s tourism minister Hisham Zaazou recently said that he expects that number to be around 10 million again this year.
“From January until the end of August the rise was very little, barely 5%,” he told Reuters.
In 2014, photographer Ben Terzza left Wales with his partner to live in Egypt for several months. A teaching job had been offered to his partner, so Terzza decided to tag along.
Terzza and his partner eventually made a trip to the capital city of Cairo. What they found there was a disappointing surprise. Cairo felt desolate and was visibly empty, which Terzza captured in a selection of his photos below.

Guinness-bryggeriet i Irlands hovedstad Dublin forandrer sin 256 år gamle oppskrift slik at ølet skal bli veganervennlig, skriver britiske Daily Mail, ifølge dagbladet.no
Bryggeriet har nesten siden starten brukt isinglass i filtreringsprosessen- en substans fra tørkede svømmeblærer i fisk – for å bedre gjæringsprosessen og for at det ikoniske stout-ølet skal få et klarere sluttresultat.
Mesteparten av dette avfallsproduktet fra fiskeindustrien blir filtrert bort underveis i bryggingsprosessen, men spor av fiskeblærer er fremdeles å finne i sluttproduktet, skriver The Independent.
Etter flere år med påtrykk fra stout-elskende, irske veganere, har Guinness nå varslet at det fra neste år kan bli slutt på at de bruker fiskeblærer i ølproduksjonen.
I 2016 skal bryggeriet nemlig bygge et nytt filtreringsanlegg, og de nærmest lover at det betyr slutten for fiskeblærene.
– Selv om isinglass har vært en god metode for å klarne ølet og er blitt brukt i mange år, regner vi med at bruken av det blir slutt når det nye anlegget tas i bruk, sier en talsmann for Guinness til The Times og legger til:
– Vi er klar over at bruken av isinglass er til hinder for at enkelte vil drikke våre produkter.
Guinness sier de allerede er i gang med å finne gode alternativer til isinglass.
Veganere og strenge vegetarianere har klaget over at Guinness og en del andre bryggerier har kunnet bruke fiskeproduktet i sine brygg, uten at det framgår av produktinformasjonen på flaskene.
Europa-parlamentet sa for tolv år siden nei til planene om å tvinge bryggerinæringen til å opplyse om fiskeblærebruken, etter at lobbyister fra bryggerinæringen påpekte at dette var en tradisjonell metode som aldri har gitt bivirkninger hos forbukerne.
Guinness brukte ikke isinglass da bryggeriet så dagens lys i 1759, men produktet kom i bruk på 1800-tallet og førte med seg store besparelser.
Isinglass er ikke mye brukt i moderne bryggerivirksomhet, da produktet gjerne er erstattet med syntetisk gelatin.
Det rapporteres at Guinness nå ser nærmere på to ulike og aktuelle filtreringsmetoder som ikke krever bruk av isinglass.
Dette skjer bare ni måneder etter at bryggeriet skrev til en nettguide for veganere at det ikke finnes et annet alternativ enn fiskeblærer for å kunne filtrere den berømte, svarte drikken.

Kullgruvebyen Svea på Svalbard kan for aller første gang oppleves av turister, skriver nrk.no
– Svea tilfører reiselivet på Svalbard en ny dimensjon og våre gjester vil oppleve et fullt operativt gruvesamfunn på nært hold, sier administrerende direktør Wenche Ravlo i Store Norske.
Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani skal inngå samarbeid med Basecamp Spitsbergen om utvikling og drift av turistvirksomhet i gruvebyen.
– Svea er verdens nordligste operative gruvesamfunn og vi gleder hos til å formidle historien fra svenskenes oppstart i 1917 til det som i dag er et av verdens mest avanserte gruvesamfunn øverst på jordkloden, sier administrerende direktør Steinar Rorgemoen i Basecamp Spitsbergen.
Avtalen er et testprosjekt og gjelder fra januar til midten av mai 2016.

CANADA: Ottawa City Hall is seeing more hotel proposals, which is good news for a tourism sector intent on increasing the number of visitors to the capital, the ottawasun.com
When the Shaw Centre replaced the congress centre in 2011, the city had a landmark convention facility but not the hotel capacity, especially downtown, to attract major conferences.
The downtown hotel market has been in flux in recent years, and not always in favour of tourism and the hospitality sectors.
Downtown hotels have been sold and converted to other uses, most notably student residences in the cases of the old Holiday Inn on Cooper St. and Quality Inn on Rideau St. Minto recently converted a hotel on Lyon St. into Apartments.
However, boutique hotels are being built on Slater St. downtown and Dalhousie St. in the Byward Market. The Arts Court redevelopment behind the Shaw Centre will have a hotel. The old Medical Arts Building on Metcalfe St. is being eyed for a hotel, too.
Morguard Corp. has a proposal to transform an entire city block between Sparks St. and Queen St. on the west side of downtown. The plan calls for the demolition of 17-storey hotel along Bay St. to be replaced by a 23-floor residential tower and a 27-floor hotel. Morguard is scheduled to pitch its design to the city’s urban design review panel on Thursday before the application goes to planning committee at a future date.
There’s also interest outside the core.
Orléans celebrated back in 2011 when the suburb saw its first hotel built in 30 years.
More hotels have also popped up in the south end of Ottawa, likely serving a demand created by the airport and EY Centre.
Next Tuesday, council’s planning committee will be asked to approve a hotel proposal for 93 rooms at 3605 Paul Anka Dr., off Hunt Club Rd.
Mayor Jim Watson was concerned about the hotel capacity after the Shaw Centre opened, but now he sees a better balance.
“I have been pleased we have seen a modest increase,” Watson told the Sun. “There’s a better equilibrium now.”
The new hotel rooms can’t come soon enough for Ottawa.
The city is expecting to boost its tourism numbers significantly in 2017 during Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations. While not all the hotels under construction will be ready by 2017, the increase in accommodation space will help in the subsequent years as Ottawa tries to retain the tourism interest.
