Jbeil

Lebanon: Jbeil’s selection as Arab Tourism Capital for 2016 was officially announced by Lebanese Tourism Minister Michel Pharaon at a news conference Thursday, www.dailystar.com.lb reports.

The title recognizes the efforts Jbeil has made to attract new visitors and officials hope it will draw even more to the historic Lebanese city. Over the past few years, Jbeil has become a major economic hub and tourist destination.

People from across Lebanon and the Arab world visit the city, one of world?s oldest. Its new title crowns a series of efforts made by its citizens and municipality.

The city made headlines at Christmas with a spectacular 25.5-meter-high golden tree. The elaborate display drew international attention and was mentioned in The Wall Street Journal. The buzz drew visitors from across Lebanon, giving the city an economic boost.

But Jbeil did not gain its current reputation overnight. The city’s costal location and its mixture of traditional and modern attractions contribute to its appeal. In addition to the Byblos ruins, the city has become known for its refined seafront restaurants and vibrant nightlife.

In summer, the Byblos International Festival draws big names from the music industry to Lebanon to perform. This year’s festival runs from July 13 to August 18 and includes such performers as John Legend, French singer Mireille Mathieu and Irish pop-rock band The Script.

Visitors can currently enjoy the city’s charms at the Byblos en Blanc et Rose wine festival, which runs through June 13.

Jbeil lies 40 kilometers north of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

KUWAIT UNVEILS NEW LANDMARK SET TO BECOME A “BEACON FOR THE CITY”

Kuwait architecture firm KEO has launched a new project which it claims is set to become a “beacon for the city”, www.arabianbusiness.com reports.

The practice is working on a new headquarters for the Kuwait Investment Authority in the country’s capital city which is inspired by four elements based on traditional Islamic design ? the courtyard, sustainability, the mashrabiya and traditional geometric shapes.

Design director Raj Patel said: “The building is really in two parts. The large horizontal podium containing a VIP Reception Hall, Conference Centre, Dining Hall, and Public spaces are in the shape of a dhow – the vessel which bought riches to the country through fishing and pearl diving.

“And the vertical modern tower piercing the skyline, which contains the private offices for the employees. It represents the future wealth of the country and its increasing global presence.

“Both forms are majestic and a powerful symbol of the past and future which remind the occupants and visitors that both can be celebrated in one project.”

The 220 metre tall tower lifts six floors off the ground so the podium building slips through it.

The tower consists of 40 floors which are stacked in five office courtyard atriums of eight floors each.

Each of these eight storey courtyard atriums has a two storey atrium extending to the east, a four storey atrium extending to the north, and a two story atrium extending to the west. A central 16m x 16m open void on each floor is what links the eight floors together.

KINSHASA USES ROBOTS AS TRAFFIC WARDENS

Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of the largest cities in Africa, with a population of well over 10m. Nonetheless, when recruiting traffic wardens, it’s looked to the ranks of the distinctly non-human: five of them are robots, designed and built by local engineers to manage the city’s most gridlocked junction, www.citymetric.com reports.

The aluminium and steel robots stand eight feet tall and look a lot like Transformers, complete with (not strictly necessary) human-style faces and voices which direct pedestrians. Their arms lift and rotate to direct traffic and pedestrians in different directions; they’re also fitted with red and green lights. Lodged inside their chests are surveillance cameras which record passing traffic.

The first two robots were installed in 2013, with a further three unveiled this year. While they’re undoubtedly fun to look at, some have accused the government of using them to distract from the city’s wider traffic problems. As Sam Sturgis notes at Citylab

This is not a legitimate solution for a city bursting at the seams with informal urbanisation. The robots are basically glorified traffic lights ? which Kinshasa needs more of in general.

We’re divided: while they may not be the best use of the city’s traffic management budget, they are very cool. And the more eye-catching they are, presuambly, the more likely people are to pay attention to them.

This one is at work on the Triomphal boulevard, at the crossing of Asosa, Huileries and Patrice Lubumba streets:

Den ultimate gutteturen? Kombinasjonen av business & pleasure? I hvert fall kan du nå for første gang oppleve Formel 1-løpet Singapore Grand Prix som gruppetur gjennom racets hovedsponsor Singapore Airlines, skriver VG.

Marina Bay Sands

Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan have agreed to launch three new bus services among them under the BBIN motor vehicles agreement, Bangladesh Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said.

The agreement was signed on June 15 in Thimphu, Bhutan, by the transport ministers of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal, www.dhakatribune.com reports.

After the signing, Quader met Bhutan’s Information and Communications Minister Lyonpo Dhungyel and they reached a decision to launch two bus services between Dhaka and Thimphu, the first of its kind between the two countries.

Quader also met Nepal’s Physical Infrastructure and Transport Minister Bimalendra Nidhi and the two decided to launch a Dhaka-Kathmandu bus service.

Quader told reporters that the initial decision to launch three trans-border bus services had been made. Sources said two of the three new bus routes are Dhaka-Thimphu via India’s Joygong and Bhutan’s Phuesoreng, which will pass through Burimari border, and Dhaka-Thimphu via India’s Guwahati and Bhutan’s Samdrup Jongkhar, which will pass through Tamabil border in Sylhet.

The other route is Dhaka-Kathmandu via India’s Panitanki and Nepal’s Kakarbhitta. It will pass through Bangladesh’s Banglabandha border. Road Transport and Bridges Ministry’s Joint Secretary Chandan Kumar Dey said bilateral and trilateral protocols would be needed before launching the new bus services.

He also said valid documents would be needed for vehicles to enter from one country to another. Quader earlier said vehicles crossing the BBIN countries must have insurance coverage and authorised officials can search them.

“They will not be allowed to take passengers while in another country during the journey.”

At present, Bangladesh and India have a bilateral arrangement on passenger movement but Bangladeshi vehicles can enter Nepal or Bhutan through India and vice versa once the new agreement takes effect.

Jakarta (wikipedia.org)
