Havana

Kart: commons.wikimedia.org

SOLAR STREET LIGHTS FOR HARARE

Se også vår reiseblogg / see also our travel blog at www.minbestereise.blogg.no

Harare (wikipedia.org)

Harare City Council has partnered a foreign investor in a $15 million project that will see solar street lights installed in the city centre.

The project has started with Robert Mugabe Way, where workmen are already installing the solar powered street lights.

The whole central business district requires 4 000 lights, council says.

“We have embarked on a project that will see solar street lights being installed in Harare.

“It is being done at no cost to the city council since we were partnered by a Zambian company, Lamise Investments, which will in return enjoy advertising rights on the poles for a period of 15 years,” said council spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme.

The use of solar energy would help reduce council’s electricity bill significantly.

“The installation of lights will increase visibility and reliability as power cuts will no longer affect their function,” he said.

Installation of street lights which has begun with Robert Mugabe Way, is expected to cover a number of other streets including Samora Machel, Jason Moyo, Julius Nyerere, Kenneth Kaunda, First Street, Sam Nujoma, Third Street, Simon Vengai Muzenda, Leopold Takawira, Angwa, Herbert Chitepo Avenue and Borrowdale Road.

Residents have all along condemned council for failing to repair damaged streets lights.

The boat operator Bumblebee is hoping to rally support for a new ferry service from Alderney to Guernsey, Jersey and France, www.itv.com reported.

Alderney

The firm has been putting posters up in the capital St Anne ahead of a public Meeting where they’ll detail plans to islanders.

The company believes they could bring 7,000 visitors to Alderney in the first year alone.

“Transport links have been the subject of debate in Alderney all year. Here is a serious proposal by people who know the island and the business. It will put Alderney on the tourist map, has the capacity to transform the island?s economy and will generate renewed investment in the island. We hope as many people as possible will come along to our meeting to listen and ask questions”, says Chris Meinke, Bumblebee’s marketing director.

“CRAZY” BADGER KEEPS LUXURY STOCKHOLM HOTEL ON LOCKDOWN

Se også vår reiseblogg / see also our travel blog at www.minbestereise.blogg.no

Stockholm Police said the “crazy or stressed-out” badger recorded by CCTV cameras at the Radisson Blu hotel may have been searching for food due to waking early from hibernation, according to upi.com

Watch the video here: www.upi.com/Odd_News/2015/03/06/Crazy-badger-puts-Swedish-hotel-on-lockdown/7011425654161

The luxury Radisson Blu Hotel in the Swedish capital was on lockdown early Friday due to the badger refusing to let anyone near the door, police said.

Stockholm police said the badger was spotted near the entrance of the hotel about 5 a.m. Friday and authorities were called when the animal acted aggressive toward anyone who attempted to get in or out of the building.

“A crazy or stressed-out badger is preventing the staff and clients at a major hotel from leaving their cars and from picking up their bags,” a report on the Stockholm Police website said.

The report said police summoned a game warden to the scene, but the badger was gone by the time the official arrived. The hotel was on lockdown for about 40 minutes.

“Nightlife in Stockholm is beastly,” Albin Naverberg of the Stockholm Police told newspaper DN.

Naverberg said the badger may have been stressed from waking early from hibernation. He said the animal was likely on the hunt for some food.

The badger apparently has good taste — the Stockholm hotel was named the “Radisson Blu Hotel of the Year” on Friday morning.

VIENNA TO BUILD WORLD’S TALLEST WOODEN SKYSCRAPER

A wooden skyscraper that Austrian architects say will be the tallest of its kind in the world is to be built in Vienna next year, The Guardian reported.

The 84-metre (276 ft) HoHo project in the Seestadt Aspern area, one of Europe’s largest urban development sites, will house a hotel, apartments, restaurant, wellness centre and offices, and is expected to cost about 60 million euros.

Photo: Rüdiger Lainer and Partner

Project developer Caroline Palfy, of Kerbler, which is behind the building, said the firm chose wood because of its environmental benefits.

“I think it is important everyone now thinks in different ways. We have wood, which is a perfect construction material for building”, she said. “It was used 200 years ago and it was perfect then and is perfect now.”

With 76% of the building expected to be made from wood, architects say it will save 2,800 tonnes of CO2emissions when compared with a similar concrete structure, the equivalent of driving a car 25 miles every day for 1,300 years.

Compared with wood, which absorbs CO2 from the air while a tree is growing, the production of concrete causes high levels of carbon emissions.

The Vienna fire service has concerns about the wooden structure, however, and is working with the architects to test their plans

“The main factor is that everyone wants to build higher and higher buildings. An 84-metre-high building in Europe is not usual and there are a lot of necessities that have to be realised”, said fire service spokesman Christian Wegner.

“A few of us were upset because it was crazy to present an idea like this that has not been discussed with everyone yet.”

“They have to carry out special tests on the correct combination of concrete and wood. We also want to develop a more fail-safe sprinkler system. I expect they will pass the tests but if they develop the building as they say they will, it will be a serious project.”

Other high-rise buildings in Vienna have attracted concerns from politicians, who have described their height as “exorbitant” and complained they were not being filled.

But Katrina Riedl, spokeswoman for the ÖVP, the Austrian People’s party, defended the latest project.

“Vienna is not a skyscraper city but innovation is part of our city and why not try new things”, she said.
