Male, capital of Maldives.

Japan has opened it’s first ever embassy in the Maldives, reports haveeru.com

The embassy in the capital Male, was jointly opened Monday. Japan established diplomatic ties with the Maldives in 1967, and the Maldives established an embassy in Tokyo in 2007.

All of the dealings between both countries had since 1967 been made through the Japanese embassy in Sri Lankan capital Colombo.

Over the years, Japan has been one of the main sources of foreign aid to the Maldives. The most notable contributions made by Japan to the Maldives’ development include the building a seawall around capital Male and construction of several schools across the archipelago.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom visited Japan last year. During his visit, the president met Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and held official talks on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
