Interessen for å se det store nyttårsfyrverkeriet på Oslo havn er stor over hele landet, og ikke uventet var Oslo hotellbyen de fleste nordmenn søkte på forut for nyttårshelgen, viser tall fra hotellsøkesiden Trivago. Hvor mange som faktisk reiste, sier søkesiden ingenting om, skriver VG.

Hotellsøk på Göteborg og København fulgte på plassene etter Oslo. Andre norske hotellbyer og feriesteder som hadde høye søk før nyttårshelgen var Bergen med en åttende plass, fulgt av Trondheim og Hemsedal på de to neste plassene.

Svenskene hadde Stockholm som fremste søke-by, mens svært mange dansker foretrakk Berlin og Hamburg i Tyskland som reisemål for nyttårsferien.

Trivago-oversikten viser også at snittprisen for et hotellrom i Oslo nyttårshelgen var 1336 kroner per natt, mens København i snitt tok 1607 kroner og London hele 2729 kroner.

Starting January 1, Portugal’s capital city of Lisbon will charge a one-euro-a-day revenue municipal tax (Taxa Municipal Turística) to tourists staying overnight in the city.

The new municipal tax was approved in December 2014 by the city administration, reports The Portuguese American Journal.

The new tax will be applied to both foreign tourists and Portuguese nationals, including Lisbon residents, who choose to stay overnight at the city’s hotels or other public accommodations. The charges, paid directly by customers to the hotels, will be collected by the city as revenue.

Exempt from the new municipal tax are children under 13 years old; people who stay overnight in the city for medical treatment; and people identified as guests of organizations or institutions.

Starting in April, 2016, an additional municipal revenue tax to be determined will be also applied to visitors on arrival through Lisbon airport.  The tax was scheduled to start January 1, but is on hold pending from ongoing negotiations with the ANA [Aeroportos de Portugal] and the central government.

A tax to be levied to tourist entering Lisbon by sea is also being considered.

This coming year, the municipality of Lisbon hopes to raise an estimated 15.7 million euros in revenue from the new municipal tourist tax, to finance investments in the city.

Den tyske moteskaperen Karl Lagerfeld (82) vil ikke være snauere enn sine mote-rivaler Versace, Bulgari og Armani, som alle har sine hoteller – sistnevnte i verdens høyeste bygning Burj Khalifa i Dubai, der designerens hotell legger beslag på fire etasjer av den 828 meter høye “måneraketten”, skriver VG / HRR Nett.

Karl Lagerfeld har gjennom årene design-bidratt til flere hoteller rundt om i verden, men er nå i gang med å tegne det som skal bli hans aller første “Lagerfeld-hotell”, som skal åpnes i den autonome, kinesiske regionen Macau, kjent for sine mange kasinoer og gambler-turisme.

I samarbeid med en lokal kasino-driver bygges Lagerfeld-hotellet i 20 etasjer. Hotellet får 220 rom og suiter, spa, restauranter – og en spillehall, selvsagt.

Chanel-designeren utelukker ikke at det kan bli en kjede av Lagerfeld-hoteller – om debuten i Macau faller i smak hos det motebevisste gjesteklientellet.

For å minimere skadene hadde statsminister Akilisi Pohiva erklært unntakstilstand før syklonen Ula rammet. I tillegg til den sterke vinden var det også varslet høy vannstand i de lavtliggende øyene.

Syklonen rammet lørdag først den nordlige øya Vava’u, der den rev tak av hus, ødela avlinger og veltet trær. Flyplassen ved hovedstaden Nuku’alofa ble stengt for innenlandstrafikk.

Det er ventet at uværet vil svekke seg når det søndag fortsetter mot Fiji.

I fjor ble Tonga rammet av syklonen Ian, som tok livet av én person og gjorde 4.000 husløse.

Kongeriket Tonga består av 177 øyer og atoller, 52 av disse er bebodd. Landet har 103,000 innbyggere, rundt 25,000 av dem bor i hovedstaden Nuku’alofa, på øya Tongatapu.

Det pågikk fredag ettermiddag fortsatt etterslukking etter brannen i skyskraperen The Address Downtown Burj Dubai, i Dubai i De forente arabiske emirater nyttårsaften.

Fortsatt veltet det svart røyk ut av luksushotellet Address Downtown. En person døde av hjerteinfarkt mens 15 personer fikk lettere skader under evakueringen, skriver nrk.no

Den 302 meter høye, 63-etasjers skyskraperen inneholder 626 hotellrom og 196 leiligheter. Bygget stod ferdig i 2008. 

Hotellet ligger i Burj Dubai Development Area.

Storbrannen i luksushotellet til tross – det verdensberømte og spektakulære fyrverkeriet i Dubai gikk av stabelen ved midnatt som planlagt.

Dubai er ett av syv emirater i De forente arabiske emirater.

Vårens fineste sneakers til dame

In Norway’s capital Oslo a historic manor house dating from 1802 was ravaged by fire on 30 December. The bulding, said to be the oldest one in the popular Grünerløkka area in downtown Oslo, by the Akerselva river, housed a restaurant – Nedre Foss Gård, which in November was voted Oslo’s best new restaurant in 2015.

The hip Grünerløkka is popular among residents and visitors alike for it’s lively streets with shopping, restaurants, cafes and bars, and with original design shops and many vintage and second-hand stores, and is also a very popular residential area.

The building, owned by businessman and investor Christian Ringnes,had recently been renovated for NOK 50 million (approx.5 million euros). Mr.Ringnes told Norwegian media that he would do everything possible to reconstruct the listed building. 

The Oslo Fire Departement said the firefighting had been very difficult, and the fire fighting continued well into the next day.  

The fire probably started in the kitchen of the restaurant. No one was injured. 

The Head of the Cultural Heritage Management Office of the City of Oslo, Janne Wilberg, described the fire as “a tragedy”. 

Grünerløkka is named after Friedrich Grüner (1628-1674), who worked as a coin maker at the Royal Mint in Christiana (now Oslo), and who two years before he died purchased the Nedre Foss manor farm, and gave the area it’s present name.

Wellington’s Lyall Bay has been surfed for more than a century, and locals are worried the airport’s runway extension plans could kill some of the city’s best waves, reports Radio New Zealand.

The airport plans to extend the runway another 350m into the water, and that will affect the peakiness of the waves, cutting the number of surf rides in parts of the bay by nearly a Third.

“This is a very special place for us here in Wellington,” Wellington Boardriders Club president James Whitaker said.

“A lot of people have surfed Lyall Bay, especially the break known as ‘The Corner’, which is the break that runs parallel to the runway. And there’s also a lot of people who on a nice day come down to the beach and watch the spectacle, not just those who take part.

“It would be such a shame if the construction of an extension ruined what’s there, because it’s a very special thing.”

The bay is considered the city’s safest, most reliable break, and the shape of the bay helps focus the waves. At just 15 minutes from the central business district by car, it is undeniably convenient.

But it is also quite a particular beach. In 2014, there were only 125 days where the waves were surfable and only 38 of those days had “very good surf”.
