Finlands hovedstad Helsinki styrker sin rolle som nord-europeisk transitthavn når Qatar Airways, med base i Qatars hovedstad Doha, snart begynner flyvninger dit, skriver reisenettstedet travelnews.no
– Vi er svært glade for å se Qatar på Helsinki Airport, sier visepresident Joni Sundelin ved Finavia – den finske parallellen til Avinor.
– Dette er et flott flyselskap, som står for høykvalitets service og har gode forbindelser til store deler av verden, sier Sundelin videre.
Ifølge Joni Sundelin vil Qatar Airways’ tilstedeværelse styrke Helsinki Airports (Helsingfors-Vanda) allerede solide tilbud av ruter til Asia og Midt-Østen, samt India, Afrika og Australia.
Qatar Airways, som er en del av OneWorld-alliansen, tilbyr ruter fra Doha til 150 reisemål på seks kontinenter. I fjor vant flyselskapet for øvrig Skytrax’ prestisjefylte pris som verdens beste flyselskap.
Dato for oppstart av den nye ruten er ennå ikke satt.
Sommeren 2016 har Helsinki Airport 17 destinasjoner i Asia i sin portefølje.

Nylig gjennomførte flyselskapet Emirates, med base i Dubai i De forente arabiske emirater, verdens lengste flyrute målt i avstand.
Den 14.193 kilometer lange flyruten gikk fra Dubai til Auckland i New Zealand og tok 17 timer og 15 minutter, skriver aftenposten.no
Flygningen ble gjennomført med Emirates’ nye flyflåte Airbus 380 – verdens største passasjerfly, med landing i Auckland torsdag 3.mars.
– Det er foreløpig ikke aktuelt med en direkterute fra Norge til andre destinasjoner enn Dubai. Per i dag går alle Emirates 150 ruter til og fra Dubai. Det finnes kun et unntak og det er Emiratesruten med en A380 som går daglig fra Dubai via Milano til New York, sier norgessjef Terje Grue i Emirates.

US Hotel group Marriott International is concerned about tourist bookings in Paris this summer after November’s attacks on the French capital, an executive at the firm said on Tuesday, reports skift.com
Marriott, whose brands include the Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Autograph and Courtyard and which has 15 hotels in Paris, is working with the city’s tourist office and adapting some of its pricing in a bid to get travelers back there.
“Paris is the one that concerns us, but for the rest of Europe we don’t think there’s any reason why we shouldn’t get strong leisure travel,” Amy McPherson, Marriott Europe head, told Reuters at the IHIF hotels conference in Berlin.
McPherson said places such as Barcelona, London and Portugal were enjoying increased demand.
Earlier Marriott said it will double in size in Europe due to its takeover of Starwood, announced late last year.
Marriott has 61,000 rooms open in Europe, to which Starwood will add 40,500. The two companies’ pipeline of 21,500 planned hotel rooms means it will have more than 123,000 open or signed rooms once the deal completes in mid-2016.

The Nordic embassy in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh, in a unique move, displayed sculptures created by the Rana Plaza survivors presented at the Nordic club on Monday, ahead of International Women’s Day today, reports bdnews24.com
According to the joint embassy of Sweden, Denmark and Norway – the exhibition was aimed at showcasing the real life examples of how women, despite adversities, take control of their own lives in Bangladesh.
The Rana Plaza building collapse in 2013 killed over 1,100 people, mostly workers, and left many more injured.
Many of the women were trained under a project, “Sculptures for Survival”, supported by the Danish embassy.
Last year, a workshop was conducted for them following which they created sculptures which were later sold.
The funds raised were donated to Meena, an NGO working for the rehabilitation of these victims.
The survivors started their own income generating activity by establishing a sewing workshop with the funds.
A Bangladeshi RMG company and its Danish partners donated machines and provided technical expertise.
The Nordic embassy and its partners in the “Sculptures for Survival” project, and Shako – Women Artist Association of Bangladesh, joined hands and helped the survivors to create sculptures again.
This time the exhibition aimed to celebrate Women’s Day 2016 through emphasising the empowerment of these brave women.
Through the workshop, the women have now created new sculptures expressing powerful messages of their new empowered state.
“Each sculpture is an example of how women can step up and make a positive difference for themselves,”
Women’s empowerment is “a central pillar” in Danish development efforts, while gender equality is “fundamental” for Sweden’s development cooperation. Norway is a “strong supporter” of women’s rights in Bangladesh.
This year the joint embassy undertook different kinds of programmes to celebrate Women’s Day.
However, the embassy had to cancel the screening of an experiential documentary art film, “Dead Hands Rising”, by award winning director Khalid Mahmud Mithu. The film-maker died in Dhaka on Monday afternoon when a tree fell on him.
At the reception on Monday night, the organizers and participants observed a minute’s silence to mourn the sudden demise of the artist.
The Danish embassy in Dhaka has selected a girl student as “Shadow Ambassador” for Tuesday to promotewomen’s leadership.

Bangladesh has opened an embassy in Ethiopia in its effort to expand ties with African countries, reports bdnews24.com
The Bangladeshi foreign ministry said the new mission in Addis Abeba, home to the African Union’s headquarters, would open “newer avenues” of cooperation.
Opening of Bangladesh mission there, the foreign ministry believes, is of particular “importance” from the peacekeeping perspective.
The embassy started functioning since March 1 with Hanif Khan as Charge d’affaires. Monirul Islam will join as the Ambassador by March 15.
Ethiopia is one of the first African countries who recognised Bangladesh soon after the independence in 1971.
Ethiopia depends heavily on agriculture and is known as one of Africa’s fastest growing non-oil economies.

Færre overnattet på norske hoteller i januar i år enn i samme måned i fjor – bortsett fra på Svalbard. Oppgangen på Svalbard var på hele 36 prosent fra januar 2015 til januar 2016, skriver VG.
Til sammen ble det registrert 6700 overnattinger på den norske øygruppa, viser tall fra Statistisk sentralbyrå.
I Nord-Norge går det også oppover, med nesten 28 000 flere overnattinger på hotell i januar i år enn i samme måned i 2015.
Totalt i Norge overnattet over 1,3 millioner på hotell i januar i år. Dette gir en omsetning på 844 millioner kroner, mot 852 millioner kroner i første måned i fjor.

Se for deg Vigelandsparken i Oslo under vann. Det er faktisk ikke så veldig langt unna virkeligheten i den nyåpnede Museo Atlantico utenfor Lanzarote på Kanariøyene.
Den britiske skulptøren Jason deCaires Taylor (f.1974) har nemlig plassert en rekke menneskeskulpturer på bunnen av Atlanterhavet, 14 meter under overflaten, skriver Se og Hør.
Han har designet og satt opp lignende installasjoner utenfor Grenada i Karibia og utenfor kysten av Mexico.
Den spesielle kunstinstallasjonen, som også inkluderer en botanisk hage – blir som et galleri for dykkere snorklere. Undervannsparken ligger ved Las Coloradas Beach, like ved den populære resorten Playa Blanca, på sørkysten av øya, ikke langt fra hovedstaden Arrecife.
Noen av sementskulpturene har lokale personer som modeller. Prosjektet har tatt to år å fullføre, og får en prislapp på 700,000 euro – 6,2 millioner kroner, betalt av lokale myndigheter på Lanzarote.
To prosent av inntektene fra museet blir øremerket miljøforskning.
Da saken var oppe i lokale, folkevalgte organer for to år siden, klagde opposisjonspartier til både høyre og venstre på at kystverket på øya ikke har blitt konsultert, og flere av øyas innbyggere stilte spørsmål om ikke pengene heller burde brukes på helsevesenet.

Frankrikes enhet for mynter og medaljer – Monnaie de Paris (“Direktoratet for mynter og medaljer”) fullfører i disse dager sitt såkalte “Metal-Morphosis”-prosjekt, en transformasjon av sitt monumentale 1,2 mål store område i Quai de Conti på Seinens venstre bredd, skriver VG sitt magasin Reise.
Monnaie de Paris eller, rent formelt og administrativt, “Direction des Monnaies et Médailles”, er den franske regjeringens administrative enhet med ansvar for å utgi mynter samt å prege medaljer og lignende.
