The Swiss hotel group Mövenpick is eyeing entry into Abu Dhabi as the city grows its tourism offerings, according to The National newspaper in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates.

Demand for hotel rooms in Abu Dhabi outstripped supply in March, the research group STR Global said yesterday. Average occupancy levels stood at 83.3 per cent, a 4 per cent increase over the same period last year. 

Large trade fairs and exhibitions fuelled demand for hotel rooms last month, led by the four-day Integrated Offshore Commissioning course, and the week-long Abu Dhabi Aviation and Aerospace Week, which included the Abu Dhabi Air Expo and the Red Bull Air Race.

Mövenpick is currently in the final stages of signing a contract for a hotel in Abu Dhabi, according to Andreas Mattmüller, the chief operating officer at Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts for Middle East and South Asia.

This year, it will open Mövenpick Hotel City Star Jeddah in Saudi Arabia with 230 rooms and a third property in Doha, capital of Qatar, with 136 rooms.

It plans to open two more properties in Dubai in the next two years. Mövenpick Hotel Apartments Downtown Dubai with 246 apartments is expected to open next year. The opening of the 251-room Mövenpick Hotel Dubai Media City has been pushed to 2018.

Mövenpick said it expects to add 15 properties in the Middle East by 2020. It currently operates 30 hotels in the Middle East. In the UAE, it operates six hotels, all of which are in Dubai.

As part of the strategy it is looking at projects in Muscat, capital of Oman; Sohar and Salalah besides Abu Dhabi, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah.

Dubai, which had around 78,184 hotel rooms at the end of November, according to STR Global, is expected to add more in the run-up to Expo 2020.

Low-cost Hungarian airline Wizz Air has announced the addition of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius to its Iceland network – with more destinations possibly in the pipeline, the icelandmonitor.mbl.is website reports.

According to Icelandic tourism and travel news website turisti.is (link in Icelandic), Wizz Air will begin their service to Vilnius in October 2016 and will operate the route all year round.

Wizz Air already links Iceland and it’s capital Reykjavik to Gdansk and Warszaw in Poland, and Budapest, capital of Hungary.

Gabor Vasarhelyi, Communications Manager at Wizz Air, told turisti.is that the airline is not ruling out the possibility of further direct links to Iceland, with cities in Romania, Serbia and Ukraine the most likely candidates.

“Tourists go home. Refugees welcome” is just one of the slogans to have appeared this week daubed on the walls of the historic centre of Palma, the capital of Mallorca, The Local.es online newspaper can report.

“Stop Guiris” and “Tourism is destroying our city” are two of the others in a recent spate of graffiti that is angering visitors and local residents alike.

The anti-tourism phrases suggest a growing malaise at the number of holidaymakers crowding into Palma de Mallorca as residents complain that tourism is destroying local neighbourhoods.

Residents of La Seu, the historic old quarter of narrow cobbled streets around the city’s Gothic cathedral, bemoan the fact that on top of having to suffer inundations of tourists, they now also have their neighbourhood blighted by graffiti.

“Not only have we do deal with the burden of tourist saturation which is bringing the neighbourhood to near collapse, but we are now held to be responsible for removing the anti-tourist slogans from our walls,” said a written complaint from the residents association to City Hall.

“The council has ignored the problem, claiming that residents should be responsible for cleaning and repainting walls. They will only deal with graffiti if it is on council property,” it continued.

The Islamic Republic of The Gambia and the Russian Federation have reinforced the diplomatic relations between the two nations, as The Gambia opened a new Embassy in Moscow, the Daily Observer newspaper in The Gambia can report.

 Russia is yet to open an embassy in The Gambia, but maintains a honorary Consulate General in Banjul, the capital city. The Russian Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, is also accredited to The Gambia.

Det kunne ha vært en en aprilspøk, men Sverige skal faktisk være det første landet i verden med eget telefonnummer, skriver Dagbladet.

Tjenesten går ut på at alle som ringer +46 771 793 336 koples opp til en tilfeldig svenske som har registrert seg i appen “The Swedish Number”.

Da London-avisen The Telegraph testet tjenesten kom de i kontakt med forretningsmannen Björn i Stockholm, The Local har snakket med Nina i Göteborg, mens Tech Insider har pratet med Daniel og Mike, og Dagbladet traff på Carola fra Eskilstuna når avisen ringte nummeret.

Det er Den svenske turistforeningen som står bak nummerkampanjen, som varer fram til Sveriges nasjonaldag 6.juni.

Telefonsamtalen går via appen, og er anonym. Den som ringer vet ikke hvem som svarer i andre enden, og den som tar telefonen vet ikke hvem du er eller hvor du ringer fra.

For den som ringer koster det som for en vanlig internasjonal samtale.

Når man ringer, kan man spørre om hva som helst, nobelpriser til kjøttboller, til fine turer og nordlys. Målet med kampanjen er da også å lokke flere turister til Sverige, og turistforeningen ønsker å gi utenlandske besøkende muligheter til å oppdage nye sider av Sverige, ved å høre det fra det svenske folket direkte.

-Vi har hatt nesten 6000 samtaler det første halvannet døgnet. Vi vet jo ikke, men jeg håper vi får mange interessert i å reise hit. Jeg snakket med en fra Oklahoma i natt. Det var så interessant at vi pratet i 28 minutter, sier Magnus Ling, generalsekretær i Den svenske turistforeningen.

“Harry”, som er navnet på kafeen, spiller på det japanske navnet for piggsvin – harinezumi, og ligger i Roppongi, som er byens underholdningsdistrikt.

Gjestene står i kø for å tilbringe tid med mellom 20 og 30 piggsvin som holdes i små glassbur.

For rundt 80 kroner på ukedager og 100 kroner i helgene, får du en time der du kan kose og leke med de piggete og populære dyrene. Ifølge Reuters har piggsvin lenge blitt solgt som kjæledyr i Japan, selv om de opprinnelig ikke finnes vilt i dette landet.

Emiratet Dubai i De forente arabiske emirater vil slå sin egen rekord og bygge en enda høyere skyskraper enn Burj Khalifa, som i dag er verdens høyeste bygning, skriver VG.

Burj Khalifa, som hadde en prislapp på drøyt 12 milliarder kroner, og ble åpnet 4.januar 2010, er med sine 828 meter verdens høyeste skyskraper.

Bygget innholder blant annet hotell, leiligheter, forretninger, kinoer og kontorer.

Det er eiendomsselskapet Emaar i Dubai som ifølge nyhetsbyrået AFP har planene klare for en enda høyere bygning, som som skal stå ferdig i 2020.

Burj Khalifa het tidligere Burj Dubai, men ble senere oppkalt etter presidenten i De forente arabiske emirater, Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (68), som også er emir av Abu Dhabi, som er forbundshovedstad i emiratene.

“Burj” er forøvrig det arabiske ordet for “tårn”.
