Belarus has opened an embassy in the Spanish capital Madrid, the Belarus news agency BelTA reported.

The embassy will contribute to the further advancement of cooperation between Belarus and Spain. The major tasks of the embassy Spain will include the intensification of trade, economic and investment cooperation, the expansion of the intercultural dialogue and cooperation in other humanitarian areas.

A number of political, economic and cultural events marked the start of Belarus’ diplomatic mission in Spain.

On 15-16 December a Belarusian delegation led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Evgeny Shestakov paid a working visit to Spain, said the embassy.

The deputy minister met with his Spanish counterpart Ignacio Ybanez to discuss a wide range of issues related to bilateral cooperation.

Special attention was paid to the need to intensify contacts at the level of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the two countries, develop trade and economic cooperation, expand the legal framework, and organize joint cultural projects.

The parties agreed to sign an intergovernmental memorandum of cooperation in economy and industry. The document envisages the setting up of a joint trade and economic commission and also the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the agreement on cooperation between the Justice Ministries of Belarus and Spain.

An official reception was held on behalf of Belarus’ Ambassador to Spain Pavel Latushko to mark the opening of the embassy.

The event was attended by more than 100 representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Madrid, the political elite and the general public of Spain, businessmen and the Belarusian diaspora.

During his visit, Mr Judeh inaugurated the Jordanian embassy in Nicosia. During the inauguration ceremony, Judeh said that this event is a milestone in the efforts to boost ties between Jordan and Cyprus.

The two foreign ministers underlined the importance of enhancing cooperation in tourism, economic and cultural domains. Further, the two ministers discussed the latest regional developments and challenges facing the region as well as means to address these challenges.

In this regard, Mr Judeh underscored the need to relaunch serious and effective peace talks. Any talks, he affirmed, must be governed by a timeframe and lead to the establishment of a viable and independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The two ministers also discussed international efforts to fight terrorism and terrorist organizations.

The Russian capital Moscow could have as many as 20 million visitors in 2018, according to the deputy head of the national tourism department Konstantin Goryainov, Russia Today reported.

Speaking at a Moscow travel business forum, he said the city expects around 17.5 million tourists by the end this year, and that the number should grow by 20 percent within two years.

According to Mr Goryainov, nearly a million of tourists will come to Moscow to see the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Last year, over 17 million people visited the Russian capital with almost 4 million coming from abroad. Most of the foreign visitors come from Germany and China, Goryainov said.

100,000 tourists came from France, the United Kingdom and Israel, and at least another 50 thousand from other countries.

In November, the deputy head of Rosturism Sergey Korneev said he expected the World Cup would attract more people from Southeast Asia, as well as boost tourism from the United Kingdom.

The 2018 football World Cup will be held in 11 Russian cities, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Kaliningrad, and Sochi.

Moscow and St. Petersburg are among the most popular Christmas and New Year destinations for visitors from Ukraine.

The country’s tour operators have guardedly said they have seen rising demand for winter holidays in Russia, according to the Ukrainian daily Vesti.

Abu Dhabi, the federal capital and the second most populous city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), after Dubai, is expecting more than 20 per cent growth in Indian tourist arrivals this year, The Indian Express reported.

“India has been the number one source market for us globally and we have been witnessing a steady growth in tourists coming to Abu Dhabi from the sub-continent.

“We are already in the last month of 2016, and are confident of seeing over 20 per cent growth this year,” Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority Country Manager, India, Bejan Dinshaw said.

Abu Dhabi saw 280,000 Indian tourists checking into hotels in 2015.

With a large number of Indian expats living in Abu Dhabi, the actual number of visitors to the capital city is much more, he said.

The capital of UAE has already witnessed 236,000 Indians staying in hotels and spending an average 3.2 nights till September this year, Dinshaw said.

After India, the other top tourist-generating markets for Abu Dhabi are the United Kingdom, China, Germany and France.

Indian are also among the top spenders in Abu Dhabi, he said.

“Indians love shopping and are the leading spenders in Abu Dhabi. To attract shoppers we celebrate Summer Season (from June-September) during Ramzan, where many discounts and other schemes are offered,” the official said.

Abu Dhabi, placing itself as an affordable luxurious destination for Indians, is mainly targeting segments like wedding, honeymoons, family, single travellers and meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE).

With good connectivity – 250 flights a week connecting 15 Indian cities directly with Abu Dhabi – India will continue to remain a major source of holiday-makers coming to the city, he said.

“We aim to make Abu Dhabi the first choice of destination for Indians looking for long weekends and short breaks. And proximity and good connectivity gives Abu Dhabi an edge in this regard,” Benjan Dinshaw added.
