I 2015 omsatte turisme- og kulturvirksomheten på Svalbard for første gang for mer enn gruvedriften. Det viser tall fra Statistisk Sentralbyrå (SSB), skriver Dagbladet.
Turisme- og kulturnæringen omsatte for 717,3 millioner kroner, mens bergverk- og utvinningsvirksomheten omsatte for 595,9 millioner kroner, viser tallene.
30 prosent av alle årsverk på øygruppa er nå relatert til turisme og kultur.

Økningen skyldes flere turister fra Europa og USA. Turisme er nå Cubas nest viktigste inntektskilde, etter eksport av leger og andre medisinske tjenester.

I 2016 setter Riga International Airport ny rekord med mer enn 5,3 millioner passasjerer, og norske reisende bidrar til veksten, skriver TravelNews.
Ved utgangen av 2016 hadde Riga International Airport i Latvia ha betjent 5,39 millioner passasjerer. London, Moskva, Frankfurt, Helsinki og Oslo er de mest populære destinasjonene ut fra Riga.
Tilsvarende er Tyskland, Storbritannia, Russland, Finland og Norge de mest besøkte landene for utgående trafikk, skriver nettstedet.
Med dette er Riga den klart mest trafikkerte av flyplassene i Baltikum, ikke minst takket være airBaltic, som frakter rundt halvparten av alle passasjerene ut og inn av Latvias hovedstad.

Dubai Corporation for Tourism & Commerce Marketing (DCTCM) will open a tourism office in Romania after noticing that the Romanians’ interest in holidays in Dubai has increased, romania-insider.com reported.
Bucharest thus joins Prague and Warsaw, and becomes the third city in the region where DCTCM has an office.
46,700 Romanian nationals visited the emirate last year. The number will increase by 20% in 2017, according to estimates.
Dubai annually attracts 16 million visitors from around the world.
– Unfortunately, most Romanians believe Dubai is mainly a luxury destination, which targets people with high income. We hope to change this perception and to present Dubai as a destination for everyone, from budget to top luxury, said Dana Nabeel Abdulla Kambe, DCTCM strategic alliances manager.

Belarus opened an embassy in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi on 20 December during the inaugural visit of Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei to Georgia, Agenda.ge reported.
The Belarusian minister was in Tbilisi for a two-day official visit. His Georgian counterpart Mikheil Janelidze hosted him before the two officials opened the new embassy on Megrelidze Street in Tbilisi’s Saburtalo district.
While in Tbilisi Makei also visited the national memorial at Heroes Square and paid tribute to those who died for the unity of Georgia before he lay a wreath at the memorial.

Et 73 meter høyt juletre ble julaften avduket i byen Colombo i Sri Lanka. Ifølge folkene bak er dette verdens høyeste juletre og hele 13 meter høyere enn den forrige rekordholderen.
Treet er dekorert med over én million kongler og 600.000 LED-lys.
Sri Lankas hovedstad, med bl.a. sete for nasjonalforsamlingen, er Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, en forstad til Colombo, som tidligere var landets hovedstad, men som ennå har flere hovedstadsfunksjoner, med bl.a. presidentens kontor og flere regjeringskontorer. Colombo er også Sri Lankas finansielle sentrum.

Denmark is closing it’s embassy in Harare, capital of Zimbabwe, in order to focus on emerging productive markets. Most diplomatic and consular matters will be handled by the Danish embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, starting 1 January 2017.
