Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman officially opened the Malaysian Embassy in the Vatican during a visit to the Holy See on 9 May, the Channel NewsAsia reported.

“The opening of the embassy marks an important milestone and will elevate relations between Malaysia and the Holy See to greater height”, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

During this inaugural visit the Malaysian foreign minister met his counterpart, the Most Reverend Archbishop Paul Gallagher, and Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

Both sides were keen to collaborate on efforts to promote inter-religious dialogue and understanding.

Diplomatic ties between Malaysia and the Holy See were established in 2011, following Prime Minister Najib Razak’s visit to the Vatican City.

Anifah Aman’s visit also provided Malaysia with the opportunity to make clear its concept of moderation under the Global Movement of Moderates (GMM), which is aimed at promoting tolerance, understanding and respect through upholding the values of moderation and the rejection of extremism, it said.

The GMM initiative was formulated based on Malaysia’s experience in successfully developing its political, economical and social infrastructure by providing an environment of racial and religious harmony, the foreign ministry’s statement added.

On 31 May, the iconic and world-famous Manneken-Pis statue in Brussels wore his new costume of Asterix.

Manneken-Pis, the symbol of Brussels folklore, gets a costume at major events. Yesterday he celebrated the opening of the exhibition Astérix chez les Belges at the Belgian Comic Strip Center.

The Asterix comic strips was created by the French writer Rene Goscinny (1926-1977) and illustrator Albert Uderzo (b.1920), also French, and first appeared in the Franco-Belgian comics magazine Pilote in 1959.

The Manneken Pis (meaning “Little man Pee, in Dutch), also known as Petit Julien, is a landmark, 61 cm tall bronze sculpture, depicting a naked little boy urinating into a fountain’s basin.

It was designed by Hiëronymus Duguesnoy the Elder, and put in place in 1618 or 1619. It replaced the original version from 1388. The statue is at the junction of Rue de l’Étuve / Stoofstraat and Rue du Chêne / Eikstraa.

Ngabwe Is Zambia’s Top Choice for New Capital City

Lusaka

Zambia’s Minister of National Planning Lucky Mulusa have identified Ngabwe in Central Province as the new site for the country’s new capital city, according to the Zambia Reports website

When appointed as minister, Mr Mulusa embarked on a strategy to establish future plans that will help decongest Lusaka.

Lusaka has over the years grown with its population increasing at a fast pace over the years. According to the last census, the population in one of southern Africa’s fast growing states was estimated at 1.8 million people.

Experts say the population in Lusaka has grown to over 2.5 million and is soon to breach the 3 million mark, and Mulusa says there was no proper planning for Lusaka to hold its current population.

The Ministry of National Planning is going to present to Cabinet a request to go ahead and do feasibility studies of the new capital city.

Mulusa says his ministry had devised a plan to come up with a new capital city that would be able to compete with other African cities.

“When you look at Lusaka in the next 10 years, the city will not be able to sustain us. The rate at which commerce and industry and official activities are growing cannot be met with Lusaka’s ability to grow its capacity.

Mulusa said Ngabwe, west of Kabwe, was an ideal location for the capital city of Zambia because it was more central than Lusaka and it was easier to start building a city from scratch.
