When people come to the UK, it is mainly culture they are looking for: While 64 percent of the most popular tourist destinations on the internet are on the cultural side of things, 20 percent of the Top 25 consist of breath-taking landscapes. However, even when it comes to nature, the metropolis triumphs, www.traveldailynews.com reported.

London Calling: The British metropolis is Europe’s Online Sightseeing Capital. Social media has revolutionised tourism: selfies and digital check-ins let travellers share their experiences online instantly and thus allow family and friends to take part in their tourist adventures. But where are most selfies taken? What is the number one sightseeing spot according to Google searches? Where do most Instagrammers check in? A CheckMyBus study has proven what Londoners have long suspected: In 2015 the UK’s capital comes second to none in terms of online tourism.

CheckMyBus scanned all of Europe for the most popular sights on the internet. To come up With a ranking, we analysed the most frequently googled and the most frequently instagrammed points of interest. This resulted in a list of sights ranked according to their online popularity in 2015 – both for the UK and Europe.

15 of the UK?s Top 25 Sights are Located in London

When it comes to internet fame, London is the UK’s number one tourist destination. Big Ben takes front rank in the list of the most popular sights followed by the London Eye – in comparison to Big Ben a fairly recent addition to the London skyline, which is only a few metres away from the iconic clock tower.

All in all, 15 out of the 25 top ranked UK sights can be found in the British capital. Ranked sixth is the first non-London-based tourist attraction, namely the prehistoric standing rocks of Stonehenge located close to Amesbury. Other famous points of interest outside London are Edinburgh Castle (16), Brighton Pier (17) or Blenheim Palace in Woodstock (20).

LONDON SEES GROWTH IN HOTEL DEVELOPMENT

The number of hotel rooms in London is expected to grow by 12 per cent over the next three years according to new data compiled by London & Partners and AM:PM, with the increase being driven by an uplift in budget and five star hotel accommodation across the capital. These new properties and hotel extensions will add 17,769 more rooms across the capital over the same period, up from the current figure of 138,769, www.eturbonews.com reported.

The data released to coincide with IBTM World in Barcelona this week, shows that 43 budget properties are expected to open by the end of 2018, with low-cost accommodation in the city predicted to increase by 29 per cent over the next three years. Over the coming three years, 19 five star properties will also open in the capital, increasing the hotel stock in this category by 22 per cent.

Tracy Halliwell MBE, Director of Business Tourism and Major Events at London & Partners, said: “With the rising number of business and leisure visitors to London and strong occupancy levels across the city, it is great to see that a range of hotel companies are investing in new properties, catering for the demand for both low-cost and high-end hotels. With properties right next to many tourist attractions, these investments will help to attract more visitors to London as well as provide new facilities for both local and international businesses to host meetings and conferences across the city.”

Rising business and leisure visitor numbers for London have been reflected in record occupancy levels across the city’s hotels. London occupancies have averaged 80 per cent or above since 2006, according to PwC and their UK hotels forecast 2016 predicts a decade high of 84 per cent this year, with the Rugby World Cup having provided a further boost. PwC projects a further increase to 85 per cent occupancy for London?s hotels in 2016.

Kylie Minogue switched on the Christmas lights in Oxford Street in London tonight in front of thousands of fans, the standard.co.uk reported.

The Australian singer is set to follow in the footsteps of Robbie Williams and The Spice Girls in turning on the lights

Kylie Minogue joins the likes of Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Jessie J, Robbie Williams and The Spice Girls in flicking the switch in the world-famous shopping street, which was kept traffic-free for the first time ahead of the event.

Silver lights and 445 golden baubles have been installed to make it look like falling snowflakes. This year for the first time the street will be free of traffic for the switch-on.

Thousands of people lined the street for the switch-on with many tweeting their excitement in the build up.

Performances from Fleur East, Foxes, Gabrielle Aplin and X-Factor winner Ben Haenow took place before the lights were turned on.

However, despite excitement at the kick-off of Christmas celebrations in the capital, some questioned whether the event was held too early.

Ellis Wayman þtweeted: “Just watching Kylie switch on the Oxford Street Xmas lights on Periscope. It’s 1st November. Ridiculously early surely?”

While Chris Middleton posted: “Oxford Street Christmas lights switch on tonight. Exciting, but too early!”

The Christmas lights in Oxford Street has never been lighted as early as this year.

LONDON PASS GIVES VISITORS REAL TASTE OF BRITISH CULTURE

Visitors to London this autumn will be able to learn more about some great British icons with the popular London Pass city sightseeing card, eturbonews.com reported.

From 2 November The London Pass, which helps visitors to save time and money on their sightseeing, will introduce three new experiences giving visitors a real taste of British culture, both modern and historic.

Play it for laughs at the Museum of Comedy

Britons are known for their unique sense of humor, which has given rise to some of the world’s greatest TV, radio and stage comedy. Visitors can learn more at London’s Museum of Comedy, an interactive, immersive museum featuring more than 6,000 iconic props and artifacts from some of the most popular comedians and comedy shows both past and present.

Spot the handmade magic props belonging to legendary comic magician Tommy Cooper, caricature puppet heads from seminal 1980s TV show Spitting Image and the six-necked guitar used by leading surrealist comic Bill Bailey. Normally priced at £5 for adult and £4 for children, entry to the museum and revolving exhibitions is free with The London Pass.

Explore 19th century romance at the Keats House Museum

Explore the life and work of one of Britain’s greatest poets, John Keats, through new exhibits of his original manuscripts and artifacts at his former home in Hampstead. Through these items visitors will be told the story of how Keats found inspiration, friendship and romance in his Regency villa, leading to such classic works as Ode To Autumn.

A contemporary of Byron and Shelley, Keats was a leading light in the British Romantic movement of the early 19th century before his death at the age of just 25. For visitors with a creative streak of their own, there is even the chance to turn poet and put pen to paper while crafting an original poem! Normally priced at £5.50 per adult, entry to the museum is free with The London Pass.

A classic taste of Britain at the V&A!

London Pass holders can enjoy one of Britain’s more refined contributions to society at the Victoria & Albert Museum, one of the world’s leading art and design spaces. After discovering the world-class exhibits at this free-to-enter museum, they can stop for a free Cream Tea Package at the V&A Café.

Britain’s tradition of taking tea with sweet scones, cream and jam dates back at least to the middle of the 19th century when tourism boomed in Victorian Britain.

At the V&A Café, the package includes a homemade raisin scone, Cornish clotted cream, strawberry jam and a loose leaf tea. Normally priced at £6.65 per person, the V&A cream tea package is included free with The London Pass.

Also new for autumn 2015 is a series of special offers for London Pass holders at attractions and retail outlets: a 15 per cent discount on purchases at The Toy Store in Oxford Street and the Nickelodeon Store in Leicester Square, and 10 percent off gift shop purchases at the Tower Bridge Exhibition and Twickenham Stadium Tours.

Making significant savings with The London Pass is simple for visitors to the UK’s capital city as they simply need to show their card at any of the 60-plus featured attractions to gain admittance with nothing else to pay.

The London Pass saves holders not only money but time too, as the card includes queue-jumping privileges at a number of popular city attractions, meaning less time waiting to gain entry, and more time enjoying their chosen experience.

IKONISK KOLOSS I LONDON BLIR HOTELL
