Russia has introduced a new tourist pass, PassCity, which will be of use not only to foreign travelers who have come to Russia for a few days, but also to students from overseas and expatriates whose stay extends to a few months and more.

PassCity has apps available for Android and iOS with free audio guides in English and Chinese, the Russia Behind the Headlines – rbth.com website reported.

PassCity has become Russia’s first pass which is valid in two cities at once and covers all the major museums of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The price for a tourist pass for 3/5/7/10 days varies from $80 (1 person, 3 days – 5190 rubles) to $230 (2 people, 10 days – 14,390 rubles).

A 90/180/360-day pass costs from $64 (1 person, 90 days – 3990 rubles ) to $160 (2 people, 360 days – 9990 rubles).

The package for several days was designed for tourists and includes an unlimited number of museum visits per day, as well as public transit.

The 3/6/12-month card is meant for temporary residents of the cities and covers one museum visit a day, without access to public transit.

Apart from admission to museums, the pass gets you free coffee in the DoubleB chain of coffee shops, several trips on the airport express in Moscow, and subway rides in St. Petersburg or by taxi ordered through the Yandex Taxi service.

The Voxxter team spent more than two years developing the pass; while working on it, they established partnerships with Mastercard, Yandex Money, Yandex Taxi (a Russian taxi service similar to Uber, and DoubleB.

PassCity is as easy to use as a regular credit card: It uses the Mastercard payment system, and the chosen package of services is activated upon purchase. You can deposit money on the card and use it to pay for other goods and services: Using an extra credit card instead of your primary card when traveling is a sensible security measure.

Cards are delivered through a system that has recently gained popularity among Internet banks.

“You can order the pass online or through the app, and our courier will deliver it where and when you decide, for instance, your hotel, or the railway station where the airport express arrives. Our customers have confirmed that this is a lot more convenient than having to look for a sales office in an unknown city,” explains Maksim Ivlev, Voxxter CEO.

Voxxter believes the pass could be useful for tourists who come to Russia to watch upcoming sporting events, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The Russian capital Moscow could have as many as 20 million visitors in 2018, according to the deputy head of the national tourism department Konstantin Goryainov, Russia Today reported.

Speaking at a Moscow travel business forum, he said the city expects around 17.5 million tourists by the end this year, and that the number should grow by 20 percent within two years.

According to Mr Goryainov, nearly a million of tourists will come to Moscow to see the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Last year, over 17 million people visited the Russian capital with almost 4 million coming from abroad. Most of the foreign visitors come from Germany and China, Goryainov said.

100,000 tourists came from France, the United Kingdom and Israel, and at least another 50 thousand from other countries.

In November, the deputy head of Rosturism Sergey Korneev said he expected the World Cup would attract more people from Southeast Asia, as well as boost tourism from the United Kingdom.

The 2018 football World Cup will be held in 11 Russian cities, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Kaliningrad, and Sochi.

Moscow and St. Petersburg are among the most popular Christmas and New Year destinations for visitors from Ukraine.

The country’s tour operators have guardedly said they have seen rising demand for winter holidays in Russia, according to the Ukrainian daily Vesti.

Tourist spending in Moscow drops by half

Tourists visiting Moscow from abroad spend on average $800 per trip, whereas Russian tourists spend $200 on a visit to the capital, according to Konstantin Goryainov, deputy head of the Department for National Politics, Interregional Relations and Tourism of Moscow, who presented the statistics to journalists at a recent press conference, the Russia Behind the Headlines website, and the Interfax news agency reported.

– Tourists who come to Moscow from abroad spend something in the region of $800 when they come. Since the start of the crisis, foreign spending in Moscow has fallen by half in Russian terms, as this is measured in dollars. Moscow needs to create more itineraries and offer better-quality services, in order to raise this amount by another 20-30 percent,’ Mr Goryainov said.

He noted that while foreign tourists clearly prefer to fly to the city, more Russian tourists still arrive by train. Just over a third of Russian tourists travel by rail compared with 25 percent who travel by air. Only 1 percent of tourists visit the city by boat, on a river cruise, for example.

Maintaining and improving transport infrastructure is critical for attracting tourists, according to Goryainov. ‘There are already four international airports in Moscow, and 10 train stations. Half of foreign visitors to the country come via the capital – it is an important center for transportation,’ Goryainov said.

On average, Moscow hotels have been at 62-63 percent capacity throughout the year, slightly up from the before.

‘We are interested in keeping hotel capacity at a steady average throughout the year; therefore we introduced an events calendar showing 500 events in Moscow, spread out over the four seasons,’ Goryainov said. ‘Tourism’s contribution to the region’s GRP (Gross Regional Product) is at about 3-4 percent, however in Moscow itself this figure doubles to about 6-8 percent and brings in trillions of rubles of GRP,’ he added.

According to the statistics presented at the event, there were 17 million individual arrivals to the city in 2015, of which 2 million were foreigners. Tourists from China, Germany, Turkey and France make up the bulk of foreign tourists.
