Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway lay the foundation stone for the new Munch Museum at Bjørvika in Oslo in a formal ceremony Friday afternoon. The museum is planned to be completed in December 2019, the Royal Court’s website www.kongehuset.no reported.

The new museum (pictures) will be spacious enough to house the City of Oslo’s fabulous Munch collection comprising nearly 28 000 works. It will also house the collections of Rolf E. Stenersen, Amaldus Nielsen and Ludvig O. Ravensberg, and will have the capacity to mount larger international exhibitions.
Girls on the Bridge, 1901
The foundation stone contains a brooch and a mug from Fredrikstad, a seed from one of the apple trees at Edvard Munch’s home and studio at Ekely in Oslo , a twig from one of the cherry trees outside the current Munch Museum at Tøyen in Oslo, a copy of Munch’s will, earth from Munch’s birthplace at Løten, a roof shingle from the historic Vågå Stave Church which inspired Munch’s paintings in the Aula of the University of Oslo, and a smooth stone from the pebble beach at Åsgårdstrand where Munch painted Girls on the Bridge, among other works.
All of these artefacts come from places linked to the artist in some way. The foundation stone will be placed in the floor of the new museum.
The floors of the new Munch Museum will be built both below and above ground level. The building will rest on poles fixed in bedrock that is under water of up to 60 metres deep. The completed museum, with its characteristic tower, will reach 60 metres into the air.
Unlike many other art museums, the main functions of the new Munch Museum are organised on a vertical, rather than a horizontal, plane.
The building is comprised of a 13-storey tower standing on a three-storey base. The closed portion of the tower, which will also be soundproofed, will contain the exhibition rooms, storage rooms and conservation rooms.
Edvard Munch (1863-1944), 1921
The open portion of the tower will contain circulation and rest spaces for visitors as well as entryways to the exhibition rooms

Monday morning Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway formally received the President and First Lady of Singapore, the Royal Court reported on their website www.kongehuset.no
President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Mrs Mary Tan are visiting Norway from 10 to 12 October. This is the first official State Visit from Singapore to Norway. The first two days of the programme will take place in Oslo, and the final day will be held in Tromsø, Northern Norway’s largest city.
Economic cooperation between Norway and Singapore is expanding quickly and is important for both countries. More than 250 Norwegian companies are established in Singapore, which is their most important gateway into the Asian markets.
The visit began with a formal welcoming ceremony on the Palace Square Monday morning.
His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon accompanied President Tan and Mrs Tan to the Palace Square, where they were received by the King and Queen and Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit.
The traditional welcome is conducted as a formal ceremony. The King accompanied the visiting head of state on an inspection of a guard of honour from His Majesty The King’s Guard, and the national anthems of both countries are played.

After the ceremony in the Palace Square, the entourage entered the Royal Palace, where official photographs were taken in the Bird Room. This was followed by an exchange of gifts in the White Parlour.

On the first day, it is also traditional for the visiting head of state to lay a wreath at the national monument commemorating the Norwegians who lost their lives in the Second World War. The King and Queen accompanied President Tan and Mrs Tan to Akershus Fortress for the ceremony.
Following the wreath-laying ceremony, President Tan visited the President of the Storting, Olemic Thommessen.
A new collection of seeds will be added to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Queen Sonja and Mrs Tan paid a visit to the Botanical Gardens in the Tøyen district of Oslo, where seeds from Singapore were presented.
Seeds from around the world are stored in the ‘doomsday vault’ on Svalbard, where genetic material from global food crops are being safeguarded for future generations. If a plant species is eradicated in a particular region due to war or other disaster, the plants can be recreated with seeds from the vault, where they are safely stored deep within the permafrost.
Queen Sonja and Mrs Tan had the opportunity to look more closely at another seed bank: the national seed bank for threatened Norwegian plant species at the Natural History Museum of Oslo. They also viewed a very special exhibition of jewellery created by artist Ingjerd Hanevold, in which all of the pieces are inspired by seeds and nature.
Following a luncheon at the Royal Palace, King Harald accompanied President Tan to the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association for the signing of a bilateral cooperation agreement between Norway and Singapore this afternoon.
Both Norway and Singapore are global maritime actors whose competitive advantages are high quality and advanced technology. Expansion of maritime cooperation between the two countries is one of the most important themes of the State Visit.
In the evening the King and Queen hosted a gala banquet at the Royal Palace in honour of the President and First Lady. Both King Harald and President Tan will speak, and Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Princess Astrid, Mrs Ferner were in attendance.
The program on Tuesday included a visit to the Research Council of Norway and Norges Bank, the central bank of Norway.

Filmvisningen i Slottsparken 21. september blir førpremiere.
