Hundreds of bartenders came together in Mexico City this week to beat the world record for the largest number of gin and tonics prepared simultaneously, the straitstimes.com reported.

According to a count on the night, 300 bartenders from the capital and across the country were lined up and synchronized in their preparation of the centuries-old cocktail.

The previous Guinness record reportedly stands at 250 bartenders.

Gin and tonic is made with gin and tonic water poured over ice and traditionally served in a highball cocktail glass, garnished with a slice of lime.

But the event in Mexico City, which was organized by Beefeater, followed the brand’s recipe which calls for a highball glass, ice, tonic, a lemon wheel and an orange wheel.

“There is a story that the Queen of England enjoyed a Beefeater gin and tonic. And one day, one of her royal guards was not there nor her bartender that was normally in charge of preparing the recipe. That is why she asked this guard to teach his entire battalion how to prepare the recipe for the perfect Beefeater gin and tonic,” said Maria Victoria Lara, brand manager of Beefeater.

The gin and tonic cocktail dates back to British-occupied India in the 18th century when it was used to prevent and treat malaria.

Mexico City

Mexico received a record 32 million tourists in 2015, enough to make the Aztec nation the 10th most popular tourist destination in the world, according to the Mexican government, reports yahoo.com news.

The top destinations for international visitors in 2015 were the federal capital Mexico City, Cancun and Acapulco.

Tourism accounts for 8.5 per cent of Mexico’s gross domestic product and the sector is growing faster than the economy as a whole, Tourism Minister Enrique de la Madrid told a press conference.

The number of international visitors has increased 37 per cent increase since the start of President Enrique Pena Nieto’s administration in December 2012.

The expansion in tourism has created 800,000 direct jobs and another 1.2 million indirect jobs over the last 10 years.

International arrivals were boosted by special events such as the October 30-November 1 Mexico Grand Prix, which brought 366,174 spectators to Mexico City.

Here are a few of the ways you can save on your bucket list trip to Mexico City this season:

Flights to Mexico City from North American destinations are at an all-time low in the winter, with fares available at almost half the price of peak season prices. Carriers such as United Airlines, Aeromexico and JetBlue are offering nonstop flights under $300 roundtrip – with fares starting as low as $200 – from major hubs in the U.S. including Houston, Dallas, Miami, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Chicago.

Take an extended weekend getaway at the newly renovated Four Seasons Hotel Mexico, and enjoy the third night free when you book two nights through March 31, 2016. It’s no secret that Mexico City has been enjoying a culinary renaissance. This year, eight restaurants were named to the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2015 by San Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, such as number six Quintonil and number nine on the list, the famed Pujol.

In October, the executive chef behind Nicos, a landmark restaurant serving traditional Mexican-style cuisine for more than 50 years and another 50 Best Latin American Restaurant, opened his latest venture, Fonda Mayora. And, a host of sophisticated mixology bars and speakeasies are putting a Mexican spin on Prohibition era cocktails such as the latest Xaman and Hanky Panky, slated to open by 2016.

A class of artists and designers have been transforming Mexico City into an international design hub. Young designers are redefining what Mexican-made means, such as the trio behind furniture design shop La Metropolitana.

New galleries and museums are making Mexico City a treasure trove for contemporary art, with staples on the scene such as Kurimanzutto along with newcomers who are cementing the destination as one for culture seekers, like LABOR Gallery and House of Gaga. And, trendy boutique hotels are also popping up like the newly opened Hotel Carlota and art deco inspired Hippodrome Hotel in the trendy Condesa neighborhood.<!– Paragraph before: For more information, news and updates on travel to Mexico City, visit http://mxcity.mx/en/.

MEXICO’S RICHEST MAN IS THE ONLY ONE ABLE TO BUILD MEXICO CITY’S NEW AIRPORT

Mexico’s largest infrastructure companies have waited more than two years to get a piece of the capital’s new $13 billion airport project. Now as bids get under way, most are in poor position to compete. Enter 75 year old billionaire Carlos Slim.

Slim’s Grupo Carso SAB has the global reputation and healthy finances to win contracts over competitors including Empresas ICA SAB and OHL Mexico SAB’s parent company, according to Mexico City-based Vector Casa de Bolsa and consultant Boyd Group International,  skift.com / Bloomberg.com reported.

Rushing to meet a 2020 deadline to open a Mexico City facility that’s already behind schedule, tenders for major work such as terminal construction are set to start in coming weeks. That’s bad timing for ICA, saddled with ballooning debt amid concern that it may need to restructure liabilities, and OHL, the target of a regulatory review that found alleged accounting violations.

“But Carlos Slim – he’s got an impeccable reputation, he’s one of the wealthiest people on earth and his name is synonymous with Mexico,” said Michael Boyd, president of Evergreen, Colorado-based Boyd Group. “Hey, is there a question there?”

Mexico City

In an effort to attract more international leisure and business travelers, the Mexico City Tourism Trust (Fondo Mixto de Promoción Turística del Distrito Federal) has partnered with The Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau to cross-promote the arts, sports, culinary, medical and life sciences offerings to potential visitors in their respective cities, eturbonews.com reported.

Through this official collaboration, both cities will work to drive tourism to the destinations by targeting partnership opportunities in the travel trade, business tourism and consumer promotion sectors over a period of three years. As leaders in the tourism and meetings and conventions industries in their countries, the two major cities have strong synergies in how they attract leisure and business visitors, making this a natural and mutually beneficial partnership.

“We are thrilled about the opportunity to work alongside Houston to further encourage travel to each of our home cities,” explains Armando Lopez Cardenas, General Director of the Fondo Mixto de Promoción Turística del Distrito Federal. “We are always looking for ways to promote Mexico City’s exceptional cultural and travel offerings within the key Houston market, and in turn we look forward to encouraging Mexico City residents to consider Houston as their next travel destination for its arts, culture and business.”

Sports

Mexico City and Houston will pursue business and promotional opportunities that encourage two-way travel between the destinations within the following industries:

Mexico City and Houston plan to connect their notable, annual marathons as sister events. The Mexico City and Houston Marathons will promote each other as well as encourage participation from each city’s residents to attend both races. They will continue to discuss the expansion of American football and soccer, as well.

Medical life and sciences

Houston will work to establish Mexico City’s presence at the annual, Houston-based Medical World Americas Conference and Expo. These destinations will encourage cross-border medical visitations and professional development opportunities for residents in the health and life sciences sector.

Arts and Culture

To increase awareness of Houston and Mexico City’s cultural amenities, both cities will work together to exchange and promote museums, arts and events. Houston and Mexico City will also pursue opportunities for joint collaboration in the fashion design industry as both cities look to promote their extensive offerings in this area.

Culinary

Both cities are experiencing a culinary renaissance, with a variety of creative cuisines and a number of notable chefs attracting visitors. Partnerships in the food and beverage space will encourage culinary enthusiasts to explore each destination.
