US architects Mark Khidekel and Regina Khidekel are on a visit to Azerbaijan to participate in the US Speakers Program held in the country, reports Trend News Agency.

They have held meetings in Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction and met Azerbaijani architects.

Khidekel said it is their second visit to Baku, adding that they like the city very much. Baku is located on the crossroads of Europe and Asia which gives a unique look to the city, he said.

He pointed out that Baku is rich of architectural monuments, which proves that the country is developing. The city’s historic buildings and old streets should be preserved, according to Khidekel.

The architect said he liked the stone facing of the buildings in Baku and noted that it is quite possible to build skyscrapers in the city. Khidekel noted that several projects were discussed during the meeting with Azerbaijani architects.

For example, a beautiful area can be built around the National Flag Square in Baku, he said. Moreover, the architect supports the idea of horizontal buildings and believes that it is a very advantageous project.

Khidekel said it is possible to construct such buildings in Baku as well, noting that thereby, Baku can become the first capital city with horizontal buildings.

The architect expressed readiness to work on such a project in Azerbaijan if he receives a proposal.

Mark Khidekel is an architect and designer. M.A. and Ph.D. from the Leningrad Institute of Architecture and Construction. Khidekel began his study of architecture under his father, Lazar Khidekel , one of the major Russian avant-garde artists and architects, disciple of Mark Chagall and Kazimir Malevich.

RUSSIAN TOURISM AGENCIES CONSIDER AZERBAIJAN AND GEORGIA ALTERNATIVE TO TURKEY

Baku

Following the tense relations between Turkey and Russia, Russian tour operators are looking for alternatives to visiting Turkey and they are currently reviewing Georgia, georgiatoday.ge reports.

At a meeting in Omsk city, managers of local tour companies announced they do not consider the “closing” of the Egyptian and Turkish market the biggest problem for Russian tourism. They highlighted that Russian holiday seekers could head to Batumi, Georgia’s Black Sea coastal city and capital of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara,, instead of Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, or Azerbaijan’s capital Baku.

Batumi

According to Yuri Lokhmankin, director of the travel company “Compass-M” with 20 years of work experience in the tourism industry, Turkey is an important touristic destination for Russian tourism, but it isn’t the only one.

“I think that there are some problems with Turkey, but it isn’t so bad we cannot solve it. We have more than enough places to go on this planet, attractions, resorts, seas, oceans and more. I think the problem is with the choice we won’t have for the next year,” Lokhmankin stated.

According to director of the “Eurasia-Tour” company Larisa Savostianova, the tourism industry in Russia goes back to 1999.

“Now we are developing Azerbaijan and Georgia as alternatives to Turkey’s touristic destinations. Remembering those tours that have been before, believe me, today Azerbaijan is like the Emirates.”

Lokhmankin supported his colleague and added that “if Batumi is a small Abu Dhabi, then Baku is Dubai.”

According to the director of the tourism agency “Russkurort” Tulegen Bekmagambetov Russia was an important provider for the Turkish tourism market and if Turkey is closed off for years it will lose its position as the number 1 resort country.

Mr.Bekmagambetov emphasized that Russia should work on replacing Turkey in the tourism market.

TBILISI, BAKU TO BECOME SISTER CITIES

Tbilisi

Georgia’s capital city of Tbilisi, and Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, may become sister cities, according to Tbilisi Mayor David Narmania, azernews.az reported.

He expressed his hope that the capital of Georgia will sign a sistership agreement with Baku soon, adding that the sister city process is already underway.

“The negotiations have already been held and relevant documents have been prepared. I believe that in the near future, Tbilisi and Baku will sign a document to become sister cities,” he said.

Narmania highlighted various projects and investment programs to be carried out between the two cities. “We will pay special attention to the development of tourism. There are wide opportunities for that,” he added.

Narmania went on saying that city officials would develop tourism in the regions where large Azerbaijani communities live. “We will first and foremost expand cultural infrastructures which contribute to the development of tourism in those regions,” the Tbilisi Mayor added.

Baku, known as home to an ancient civilization dating back to 5500 BC, is a compact city in which visitors can easily walk around the city center to see most attractions, along with a mix of architecture.

The capital is the location where past and present are intricately intertwined, having always attracted tourists.

Sabail district is a central and ancient dwelling within Baku city, located along the Caspian Sea.

There are also monuments dating to ancient ages and medieval centuries within the district. Icherisheher, meaning Old City, is the most magnificent of the historical monuments in Azerbaijan and is included by UNESCO among the world cultural heritage items. The Shirvanshah palace complex, which is another astonishing state historical architectural museum-preserve, is its masterpiece.

The open-air museum, and Baku’s most majestic and mysterious monument – the Maiden Tower or Giz Galasi – is also located here. Built in the shape of a cylinder on the Caspian Sea shore, the Maiden Tower is a structure which, rather like a buttress, sticks out from the cylindrical tower on the sea side.

The Flame Towers, the tallest skyscraper in Baku at a height of 190 m, is also a beautiful symbol of the city.

Tbilisi is a city whose history goes back more than one thousand years.

The city is not only a stronghold of early Christianity, as the beautiful ancient churches indicate, but here also coexists different religious traditions. So, many mosques, synagogues and churches of various Christian denominations can be seen in Tbilisi.

Tourists can also spend many unforgettable hours walking along the charming streets of the old town and discovering its most hidden corners. It is also possible to visit the grand open-air museum or admire the wonderful panorama of the city while climbing the walls of the ancient Narikala fortress.

The main sights of Tbilisi are its cathedrals and churches, such as the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the Metekhi Church and Anchiskhati Basilica, the most ancient cathedral in the capital, built in the 6th century. The Dzhvarismama church from the 16th century and the Cathedral of Zemo Betlemi, built in the 18th century, are also among “must see” tourist sites.
