The Italian capital Rome will host The Ryder Cup for the first time in 2022. The historic announcement, made today by Ryder Cup Europe, will see golf’s greatest team event staged on the Continent of Europe for the third time, reports rydercup.com

The Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, only 17km from the centre of Rome, will follow in the footsteps of Club de Golf Valderrama in Spain (1997) and Le Golf National in France (2018) – when the 44th edition of the match between Europe and the United States is staged in the autumn of 2022.

Four nations – Austria, Germany, Italy and Spain – had participated in an exhaustive and comprehensive Bid Process to identify the country best qualified to follow Hazeltine National in Minnesota next year; France in 2018 and Whistling Straits in Wisconsin in 2020, as host of the biennial contest. Initially the number had been seven when the process began in June last year, but Denmark, Portugal and Turkey withdrew their interest in the early stages.

ROME BANS CENTURIONS FROM THE COLOSSEUM AND OTHER TOURIST SITES

Rome has banished the Centurions from its ancient sites, bbc.com reported.

Impersonators of soldiers from ancient Rome have been a common sight at the Colosseum, Forum and other major sites, posing for photos in return for cash.

But from Thursday, the Centurions are outlaws – along with bicycle-drawn rickshaw drivers and ticket touts.

City commissioner Francesco Paolo Tronca issued the decree ahead of the Catholic Jubilee year, an important tourist event starting on 8 December.

He is in charge of the city pending the election of a new mayor and cited security issues as well as protecting tourists from scams as the reasons for the decree.

It spoke of the “inappropriate, insistent and sometimes aggressive” behaviour of Centurions, who charge between 5 euros and 10 euros ($5.3-$10.6) for a photo. They can also get tips from tour organisers for persuading tourists to go on guided trips.

Many of the impersonators commute in from poorer districts of the capital. There have been incidents of “gladiators” attacking each other to defend their pitches at lucrative sites.

Offering a ride in a rickshaw is also banned in some areas, as are touts offering bus and museum tickets.

This year Pope Francis declared an Extraordinary Jubilee Year for the Catholic Church, beginning on 8 December, the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second Vatican Council.

It will end on 20 November 2016, the Feast of Christ the King.

Parks and piazzas are being spruced up for the event, which is expected to boost the numbers of visitors to Rome significantly.

Millions of pilgrims attended the last event in 2000.

ROME’S TREVI FOUNTAIN REOPENS AFTER A MAKEOVER

Following 16 months of restoration, water once again flows through the Baroque fountain in the Italian capital. The Trevi Fountain is a famous Rome landmark that draws millions of tourists from around the world, Deutsche Welle – dw.de, reported.

Thousands of tourists and locals celebrated the inauguration of the restored Trevi Fountain. “It’s very emotional, especially for us Romans,” said Silvia Venturini Fendi from the fashion house Fendi, which sponsored the restoration. The works cost a total 2.2 million euros ($2.4 million).

Rome’s culture superintendent, Claudio Parisi Presicce, marked the occasion by throwing a coin into the fountain, paying tribute to the legend that visitors who hurl a coin over their shoulders into the fountain are destined to return to Rome. During the restoration period, there was a replacement pool put in place to avoid frustrating tourists wishing to follow this tradition. Every year coins worth about a million euros are thrown into the Trevi Fountain.

The money is collected weekly and then donated to charities.

The Trevi Fountain, a masterpiece by Italian architect Nicola Salvi, was completed in 1762. At its center is the marble stone rendering of the water god Oceanus on a shell chariot. The Rome landmark was made famous by a scene in Federico Fellini’s 1960 film “La Dolce Vita,” in which Swedish actress Anita Ekberg together with her film partner Marcello Mastroianni take a dip in the Trevi fountain.

There’s a big difference between simple tagging with spray paint and genuine street art. Rome has both, but in recent years the latter has moved more into the spotlight of the world stage. There’s even a big section on Rome’s official tourism website now detailing neighborhoods to visit to view some of the city’s best, Huffingtonpost.com reported.

Here’s a look at some places in Rome to see great street art.

TOURISTS HEADING TO ROME NEXT YEAR WILL PAY MUCH MORE

With the holy year celebrations approaching fast in 2016, the city of Rome is taking desperate measures to cope with the huge volume of tourists and pilgrims for the event. One of the dramatic steps taken by the city in this regard is raising the taxes for visitors during the jubilee year, www.tourism-review.com

A coach permit to enter the city for one day to give the tourists access to sites such as the Vatican will now cost 1,000 euros, which is essentially five times higher than the current price, which is 200 euros.

Obviously, travel agents and tour managers who have already booked holidays for their customers have risen up in protest against this step by the city council.

To make things worse for tourists, the taxation on accommodation will also be going up by double the current charge.

The ETOA (European Tourism Association) has already expressed its concern regarding this decision stating that imposing a fivefold hike on current charges for the daily permit defies all logic. They went further to add that it would pose a threat to prepaid contracts for 2016 and future tourist contracts as well, translating eventually to Rome becoming a destination that is too expensive and unpredictable for most people.

The ETOA gave a breakdown of the cost for the average traveler to Rome in the holy year celebrations. Apparently, an individual in a group comprised of 40 would end up paying 33 euros for a package that includes a night in a four-star hotel and a night on the coach.

Tom Jenkins, CEO of ETOA termed the behavior “vicious and irrational” and that it lacked any sense of practical planning.

The Holy year in Rome was announced as a year of mercy by Pope Francis, and this is bound to attract thousands of pilgrims into the city. Keeping this in perspective, the step to hike the visitor taxations might actually bring a bit of relief to take off some pressure from the already highly congested streets.

Last year the city streets were clogged up with more than 90,000 coaches and in 2016, it is expected to go up to an impossible 170,000 coaches even with the steep hike in charges. The current plan is far from adequate to handle the situation in any measure. According to experts, there needs to be a practical strategy to deal with what will invariably be a catastrophe in terms of tourist management.

Although there are more than adequate parking sites out of the center, there is no practical system to bring tourists from these sites to the center where the tourist destinations are situated. There is also no link from the main train stations to the smaller St. Peter’s station. The funding to implement anything worthwhile is inadequate and has arrived too late.

All said and done, if Rome is serious about their bid for the 2024 Olympics, they need to demonstrate through the Holy Year celebrations in 2016 that they are indeed capable of handling an event of this magnitude.

ETOA CRITICAL OF ROME COUNCIL’S TOURIST TAX HIKE PROPOSAL

A recent proposal to increase the tourist tax on coach tours through Rome in 2016 by an eye-popping 500 percent has been met with resistance from the European Tourism Association (ETOA), www.travelpulse.com reported.

The Daily Mail reported the Italian capital’s council has proposed a daily permit increase on coaches from ?200 ($224) to ?1,000 ($1,118) in an effort to reduce congestion near the destination’s most popular tourist attractions, including the Colosseum and the Vatican.

With Pope Francis declaring 2016 a Jubilee year, the city is anticipating a surge of foreign visitors.

Nonetheless, the ETOA has called the council’s proposal “out of proportion,” noting that a single visitor among a group of 40 people staying in a four-star hotel would have to pay ?33 ($37) per night in local taxes based on the proposed changes.

“It is yet another cost that is making Rome an expensive and unpredictable destination,” the organization said in a statement to the Daily Mail.

The ETOA said that coach tourism should be embraced as a potential solution to the problem, with ETOA CEO Tom Jenkins stressing that coaches are a form of public transportation with environmental benefits.

“They occupy the road space of two cars with the emissions of four, yet hold up to 57 people,” he told the Daily Mail.

The group also pointed to past missteps by city officials.

“The assessor has said that this increase is designed to act as a deterrent and force groups to travel on existing public transport to the various sites within the center of Rome, a move that had disastrous consequences in the Jubilee of 2000,” the ETOA stated, referring to the previous Jubilee’s notorious traffic difficulties.

With ETOA member tour operators threatening to scrap their visits to Rome and the potential for jobs and tourism spending to be lost, the organization is calling on the council to ditch the proposal and instead engage with the coach companies in hopes of finding a middle ground with fewer and less severe consequences.

Russia’s federal tourism agency will partner with private firms to establish national tourism offices across a number of foreign cities, news agency TASS reported Thursday, as political tensions over the Ukraine crisis see the number of Westerns tourists decline, the www.moscowtimes.com website reports.

“This scheme is very important for us given the limited financial means of both Rostourism and other participants,” TASS quoted deputy head of Rosturism Sergei Korneyev as saying.

Tourism from most Western countries to Russia sank between 15-20 percent in 2014 compared to 2013, newspaper Kommersant reported in April, citing data from Rosturism. The number of tourists overall to Russia fell 3 percent.

ÐÅÊËÀÌÀ

The first Russian national office was opened in Dubai on May 17, and will be joined later in the next four months by offices in Helsinki, Berlin, Beijing and Rome, Rostourism head Oleg Safonov said Monday, TASS reported.

The office in Helsinki will be financed solely by its commercial activities while the offices in Berlin, Beijing and Rome will be provided with some financial support from the state, according to TASS.

Of the countries that will now have tourism offices, the number of people visiting Russia from Finland fell 27 percent, from Germany 8 percent, and from Italy 9 percent. Tourism from China, meanwhile, grew 10 percent.

RESTAURANTER I ROMA I MAFIAENS GREP
