On 31 May, the iconic and world-famous Manneken-Pis statue in Brussels wore his new costume of Asterix.

Manneken-Pis, the symbol of Brussels folklore, gets a costume at major events. Yesterday he celebrated the opening of the exhibition Astérix chez les Belges at the Belgian Comic Strip Center.

The Asterix comic strips was created by the French writer Rene Goscinny (1926-1977) and illustrator Albert Uderzo (b.1920), also French, and first appeared in the Franco-Belgian comics magazine Pilote in 1959.

The Manneken Pis (meaning “Little man Pee, in Dutch), also known as Petit Julien, is a landmark, 61 cm tall bronze sculpture, depicting a naked little boy urinating into a fountain’s basin.

It was designed by Hiëronymus Duguesnoy the Elder, and put in place in 1618 or 1619. It replaced the original version from 1388. The statue is at the junction of Rue de l’Étuve / Stoofstraat and Rue du Chêne / Eikstraa.

The Belgian capital city of Brussels is hoping to boost tourism to pre-2016 levels with a Europe-wide campaign to be launched this week, the TravelMole website reported.

Exact details have not been released, but the promotion launch will take place in London, where members of the public can win a city trip to Brussels.

A similar campaign will launch simultaneously in several European cities today, May 2.

Since the terror attacks last year, the Government of the Brussels-Capital Region has made efforts to bring back tourism to pre-2016 levels.

The lockdown of Brussels in 2015 and the attacks of March 2015 impacted tourists to the city breaks destination, with occupancy and revenue per available room (revPAR) dropping significantly.
However, for the past five months the city’s hotel market is starting to show a recovery.   

According to data from STR, November 2016 saw a 10.2% year-on-year increase in occupancy.

March 2017 recorded a 19.4% increase in occupancy to 69 %.

However, the figure is still 4% lower than the capital’s March 2015 occupancy level of 72%.

Silken Berlaymont forventer i underkant av 70 millioner kroner i inntekter i løpet av inneværende år.

Selger er Hotel Berlaymont SA/Urvasco Hotel via konkursforvaltere, og formelt sett må Pandox avvente en domsslutning før man kan inngå kjøp av hotellet.

Hotellet skal etter planen drives under eget varemerke.

The city has struggled with lockdowns and terrorism threats in recent months, thanks in part to the fact that several of the perpetrators of the November attacks in Paris lived in Brussels. But Bloomberg reports residents objected to Mr Trump blasting their home city, and many took to Facebook and Twitter to protest his words.
